The Apothecary Diaries Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

The Apothecary Diaries is set in a fictional country inspired by Tang-dynasty China, and most of its cast lives inside the emperor's rear palace: a walled city of consorts, ladies-in-waiting, maids and eunuchs where rank decides everything and a careless word, or a poisoned dish, can end a life. At its centre are the four high consorts, each with her own pavilion and her own household, and the officials who manage them. Outside the walls lies the capital's pleasure district and the Verdigris House, the brothel where Maomao grew up among courtesans, and in the outer court the ministers and soldiers who scheme over the throne. The Apothecary Diaries characters are built around secrets. Almost everyone is hiding something about their past, their family or their loyalties, and Maomao, a sharp-eyed apothecary who would rather be left alone with her herbs, keeps being asked to uncover it. This guide covers the anime's first two seasons and marks the season 2 reveals as they come.

A young apothecary from the capital's pleasure district, raised by her adoptive father Luomen and the courtesans of the Verdigris House.
