What Anime Connect is
Anime Connect is a daily word-grouping puzzle: sixteen anime-related words which you sort into four hidden groups of four. The catch is that the groups overlap deliberately — several words look like they belong together until you find the connection that actually holds.
If you have played the New York Times Connections game the format will be familiar. This one is built entirely from anime vocabulary: characters, techniques, locations, studios, and terminology that only makes sense if you watch the medium. A new puzzle goes live daily and everyone gets the same grid.
How to play
- 1Read all sixteen words first
Do not start selecting immediately. The puzzle is designed so the obvious grouping is usually a trap containing one word that belongs elsewhere.
- 2Start with the group you are surest of
Select four words and submit. A correct group locks in and reveals its colour; the remaining twelve get easier with every group cleared.
- 3Mind your mistakes
You get four wrong guesses. Use them up and the puzzle ends, so submit the group you are most confident about rather than testing a hunch.
- 4Share your grid
Finishing produces a spoiler-free colour grid showing the order you solved the groups in, which you can post without giving the answers away.
Tips that actually help
The obvious four is usually wrong
Every good grid contains a decoy — four words that clearly share a theme, one of which actually belongs to a harder group. If a set jumps out immediately, hold it and work out which of those words could plausibly sit elsewhere.
Look for the awkward word
Start from whichever word seems to fit nothing. Odd ones out usually anchor the most obscure group, and identifying that group first removes the ambiguity from everything else.
Categories are rarely about plot
Groups tend to be built on wordplay, shared meanings, studios, voice actors, or techniques with a common naming pattern — not on which characters appear in the same show. Thinking purely in terms of series will strand you.
Solve in order of confidence, not difficulty
There is no bonus for cracking the hardest group first. Clearing the easy ones shrinks the board, and four words removed makes the remaining connections dramatically more visible.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the Daily Anime Quiz?
The Daily Quiz gives you clues and asks you to name one character. Anime Connect gives you sixteen words and asks you to find the hidden groupings. They are separate games with separate puzzles, and both reset daily.
How many mistakes am I allowed?
Four. Each incorrect group costs you one, and running out ends the puzzle for that day.
Does everyone get the same puzzle?
Yes — one grid per day worldwide, resetting at 00:00 UTC. That is what makes sharing your result grid meaningful.
Do I need to know all 31 anime to play?
No. Puzzles lean on widely known series and general anime vocabulary. Broad familiarity with the medium helps far more than deep knowledge of any single show.
Can I play previous puzzles?
Not currently — each grid is live for its day only, which keeps everyone solving the same puzzle at the same time.
