Code Geass Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Code Geass is set in an alternate history in which the Holy Britannian Empire has conquered Japan, renamed it Area 11 and taken away its people's name, calling them Elevens. The cast is split along that line, and then refuses to stay split. On one side are the rebels: Lelouch, an exiled Britannian prince leading the Black Knights from behind Zero's mask, and the Japanese fighters who follow him without knowing who he is. On the other are the Britannian royal family and army, which include Lelouch's own father, brothers and sisters. In between are the students of Ashford Academy, where Lelouch, Suzaku, Kallen and Shirley share a student council, and C.C., the immortal witch who set everything going by giving Lelouch the power of Geass. Again and again, people who are friends or family in one setting are enemies in the other. This guide covers the two TV seasons, Lelouch of the Rebellion and R2, not the films or spin-offs.

Lelouch Lamperouge

Protagonist

An exiled prince of Britannia, born Lelouch vi Britannia, who lives under a false surname at Ashford Academy with his younger sister Nunnally. He blames his father, the Emperor, for failing their mother, who was killed, and Nunnally, who was left unable to walk or see. After C.C. gives him Geass, he becomes the masked Zero and founds the Black Knights to bring Britannia down and build a world where Nunnally can live in peace. He is a chess prodigy and a cold strategist in battle, hopeless at anything athletic, and fiercely protective of the few people he loves.

Main Cast

Lelouch's childhood friend and the son of Genbu Kururugi, Japan's last prime minister. He serves Britannia as an Honorary Britannian soldier and pilots the experimental Knightmare Lancelot, convinced that the empire should be changed from inside and that results won by the wrong methods are meaningless. Euphemia makes him her knight in season 1, and in R2 he is the Knight of Seven. Guilt over killing his father during the war with Britannia drives much of what he does.

Dry, stubborn and secretive, she has lived for hundreds of years and rarely lets anyone see what she feels. She also has an unshakeable fondness for pizza.

Code Geass Character FAQs

Who is Zero in Code Geass?

Zero is the masked identity of Lelouch Lamperouge, whose real name is Lelouch vi Britannia. He takes it on soon after C.C. gives him Geass and uses it to lead the Black Knights against the empire his father rules. Only a handful of people learn who is behind the mask during the series, and keeping that secret from his friends at school drives much of the story.

What is Geass?

A supernatural power, also called the Power of Kings, that C.C. and others like her can grant through a contract. It works differently for each person: Lelouch's makes people obey his orders, Mao's lets him hear the thoughts of those around him, Rolo's freezes people's sense of time, the Emperor's rewrites memories and the Knight of One's shows him a few seconds of the future. The name may come from the geas of Irish and Welsh legend, a compulsion laid on a person.

Who is C.C.?

An immortal woman who gives Lelouch his Geass in return for granting her a wish, which she does not explain for most of the series. Her real name is never revealed to the audience. She has lived for hundreds of years, spends a great deal of the series eating pizza in Lelouch's room, and becomes his closest ally.

Why does Suzaku fight for Britannia?

Because he believes Britannia has to be changed from inside, and that results won by the wrong methods are meaningless. Behind that belief is guilt: as a boy he killed his own father, Japan's prime minister, during the war, and he has carried the secret ever since. It sets him against Lelouch, his oldest friend, for most of the series.

Is Kallen Japanese or Britannian?

Both. Her father is a Britannian noble and her mother is Japanese. At school she uses her father's surname, Stadtfeld, and acts the part of a sickly Britannian girl, but she thinks of herself as Japanese and prefers her mother's surname, Kozuki, which is the name she fights under.
