Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set in 2075 and 2076 in Night City, a self-governing metropolis in California where people pile cybernetic implants onto their bodies, gangs fight in the streets and megacorporations, above all Arasaka and its rival Militech, hold the real power. Most of the cast belongs to one small crew of edgerunners, mercenary outlaws also known as cyberpunks, led by a heavily augmented veteran called Maine. The story is told through David Martinez, a teenager who joins them after his mother's death, and almost every character is defined by the same question: how much chrome can you take before it takes you, and what are you chasing that makes the risk worth it? Around the crew stand the people who employ it, patch it up and hunt it. This guide covers the ten-episode 2022 anime only, not Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 or the games, and it describes events up to the end of the series.
All Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Characters
David Martinez
ProtagonistA street kid from Night City who is struggling to keep up at the elite Arasaka Academy when the story begins, his place paid for by his mother's overtime. After she dies following a drive-by shooting, he has her military-grade Sandevistan implanted, is expelled for beating his bully with it, and finds he can handle far more cyberware than most people. He joins Maine's crew, falls for Lucy and, after Maine's death, takes over as leader, adding more and more implants even as they push him towards cyberpsychosis. In the final episode he holds off Adam Smasher so that Lucy can escape, and Smasher kills him.
Lucy
Main CastLucyna "Lucy" Kushinada, a netrunner who works with Maine's crew and steals data on the side, which is how she meets David on the metro. She is quiet and guarded about her past: as a child she was one of a group Arasaka trained to dive into the dangerous Old Net, and the only one to survive and escape to Night City. She dreams of leaving the city for the Moon, and David promises to take her there. In the second half she secretly hunts the Arasaka agents searching for data about David, to keep him from becoming a test subject.
Maine
Main CastThe leader of the crew, a veteran edgerunner and a friend of David's mother, from whom he had already bought the Sandevistan before she died. He gives David the chance to work off the debt, teaches him to drive and urges him to get more cyberware so his body can keep up. His own implants start to overwhelm him while the crew holds Mr. Tanaka captive, and in episode 6 he loses control to cyberpsychosis; he tells David to run and is killed covering his escape. David carries his example, and his arms, into the rest of the series.
Dorio
Main CastMaine's girlfriend and the crew's second-in-command, tall, strong and in charge of David's combat training. She is tough but warm, and she and Maine are quick to spot that David and Lucy are falling for each other. She is the first to see that Maine's implants are hurting him and tries to persuade him to have them downgraded. She dies alongside him in episode 6.
Rebecca
Main CastPilar's younger sister, a short, impulsive and fiercely loyal gunfighter with a foul mouth and a quick trigger. She takes to David from the start and later falls for him, although he is with Lucy, and she is the one who notices first that he is slipping towards cyberpsychosis. After the time skip she takes up her brother's style with a pair of oversized cybernetic arms. She stays at David's side to the end and is killed by Adam Smasher in the final episode.
Kiwi
Main CastA stoic veteran netrunner in Maine's crew and Lucy's mentor, who handles most of the crew's intelligence work. She is cool, sardonic and lives by the rule that nobody in Night City can be trusted. After Maine dies she stays on with David's crew, but in episode 8 she sides with Faraday and helps him capture Lucy. Faraday has her killed as a loose end in the final episode, though not before she tells David's crew where Lucy is being held.
Pilar
SupportingRebecca's older brother, a crude, loud-mouthed techie in Maine's crew who likes to show off, from juggling at parties to his new pair of golden cybernetic hands. He is the most sceptical of David when they first meet. In episode 4 he mocks a stranger in the street who turns out to be a cyberpsycho, and is killed.
Falco
SupportingA nomad and expert getaway driver who often works with Maine's crew. He is calm, dependable and keeps his head under fire, and he becomes a fixture of David's crew after the time skip, driving its armoured car through the last jobs. A man of his word, he keeps the promise David asks of him in the final episode.
Gloria Martinez
SupportingDavid's mother, a single parent and overworked paramedic who wants him to rise inside Arasaka. To pay his tuition at Arasaka Academy she secretly sells cyberware taken from the dead on the black market, and the Sandevistan David finds among her things was hers to sell to Maine. She is caught in a drive-by shooting in episode 1; the Trauma Team refuses to help because she is not a client, and she dies in hospital.
Doc
SupportingDavid's local ripperdoc, who already supplies him with illegal braindances when the series opens and who installs the Sandevistan for him. He prescribes the immunoblockers David's body needs and warns him again and again not to overuse his implants. He drives a hard bargain, but his warnings about David's growing pile of chrome turn out to be right.
Faraday
AntagonistA well-connected fixer who passes jobs to Maine's crew and later to David's. The Tanaka job turns out to have come from Militech, and when it goes wrong and Militech refuses to protect him, he makes a deal with Arasaka in the hope of a place in the corporation. To deliver his side of it he captures Lucy and blackmails David into testing Arasaka's experimental Cyberskeleton. Giancarlo Esposito voices him in the English dub.
Adam Smasher
AntagonistA legendary, fully cybernetic super-soldier and Arasaka's ruthless head of security. Arasaka sends him into the final episode to deal with David and the Cyberskeleton, and he proves far beyond anything the crew has faced. He kills Faraday, Rebecca and David in the battle at Arasaka Tower.
