Fire Force Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Fire Force is set in the Tokyo Empire, 250 years after a worldwide fire called the Great Cataclysm, where anyone can suddenly burst into flames and become an Infernal, a burning monster that has to be put to rest. People who survive the phenomenon with powers are sorted by generation: second generations can control existing fire, third generations can create it, and a rare few carry the Adolla Burst, a flame the cult known as the White-Clad is hunting for. The Special Fire Force that fights the Infernals is split into eight companies, each backed by a different power in the empire — the Holy Sol Temple, the Tokyo Army, the Fire Defense Agency or Haijima Industries. Most of the cast belongs to Company 8, the newest and smallest, which was formed by a captain with no powers at all and also keeps watch on the other companies. Around it gather rival captains, an outlaw, and a family torn apart by the fire that opens the story. This guide covers the David Production anime's three seasons, which adapt Atsushi Ohkubo's manga to its end.

Shinra Kusakabe

Protagonist

A third-generation pyrokinetic who ignites his feet, using the flames to fly and to land kicks strong enough to destroy an Infernal's core. Twelve years before the story a fire took his mother and his baby brother; because he grins without meaning to when he is nervous, people blamed him and called him a devil, and he became known as Devil's Footprints. He joins Company 8 to become a hero and to find out what really happened that night, and he turns out to carry the Adolla Burst as the Fourth Pillar.

Arthur Boyle

Main Cast

Shinra's rival from the training academy and his fellow rookie in Company 8, a third generation who heats his flames into plasma and forms a blade from a sword hilt he calls Excalibur. He believes he is a knight king, and the more completely he believes it, the stronger he becomes. His parents left him as a child after their small restaurant burned down, and he is hopeless at anything that needs careful thought, but his instincts in a fight are excellent. In the final season he takes on Dragon, the leader of the White-Clad's assassins.

Akitaru Obi

Main Cast

The captain and founder of Company 8. A former firefighter with the Fire Defense Agency, he has no ignition ability and makes up for it with constant training, heavy equipment and a readiness to grapple with Infernals himself. He started the company with Takehisa Hinawa after watching another company choose which Infernals to deal with by how many points they were worth. He treats putting an Infernal to rest as taking a life, and expects his team to respect the families left behind.

Takehisa Hinawa

Main Cast

Company 8's lieutenant, a stern former soldier who rarely changes expression and terrifies the rookies. A second generation, he works his flames through firearms, controlling the power, speed and path of every bullet he fires. In the army he watched his friend Tojo turn into an Infernal, and he still carries Tojo's gun. He brought Maki, who had served under him, into the company.

Maki Oze

Main Cast

A second generation, formerly of the Tokyo Army and the daughter of General Oze. She cannot create fire but can control it at long range, putting out, absorbing or turning aside other people's flames, and she makes small fire sprites that power the Iron Owl weapons Vulcan built for her. Kind and a hopeless romantic, she loses her temper if anyone suggests she is unfeminine.

Iris

Main Cast

Company 8's Sister, a nun of the Holy Sol Temple who prays for each Infernal as it is put to rest and acts as the company's medic. She and Hibana were the only sisters to survive the fire at St. Raffles Convent, where they grew up. Gentle and devout, she has no ignition ability at the start of the story. Late in the series she learns that she is the Eighth Pillar and the doppelganger of Amaterasu, the First Pillar.

Tamaki Kotatsu

Main Cast

A Fire Soldier who covers herself in pink flames shaped like a cat's ears and twin tails, an ability she calls Nekomata. She served in Company 1 under Rekka Hoshimiya, whom she admired, until he used her to help him create Infernals; Shinra rescued her, and after a suspension she was moved to Company 8. Clumsy and quick to anger, she worries that she is weaker than her colleagues and works hard to catch up, unlocking a faster form of her power while training with Company 7's twins.

He is both a second and a third generation, able to create flames and to control them, and is widely seen as the strongest Fire Soldier of all; Asakusa's townspeople adore him even though his fights flatten their houses. Short-tempered and offhand, he distrusts Company 8 at first but becomes their trainer and ally, and in the final season he comes to their rescue disguised as "Moonlight Mask".

Shinra's younger brother, thought to have died as a baby in the fire, who was taken by the White-Clad and raised to command their Knights of the Ashen Flame. He is the Third Pillar, and with the Adolla Burst he draws away the heat that drives the universe's expansion, which brings the world around him almost to a standstill so that he seems to stop time. Cold and detached at first, he begins to remember his family after fighting Shinra, and in the final season he breaks with the cult to fight beside his brother.

What are the generations in Fire Force?

First generations are the Infernals themselves: people who have spontaneously combusted. Second generations survive with the power to control existing flames but cannot make their own; third generations can create fire, usually through one part of the body or an object. Captain Akitaru Obi, Lieutenant Takehisa Hinawa, Sister Iris, Maki Oze, Shinra Kusakabe, Arthur Boyle and Tamaki Kotatsu, who transfers in from Company 1. Later they are joined by the scientist Viktor Licht, the engineer Vulcan Joseph and his apprentice Yu, and Lisa, who first appears as a member of Vulcan's household.

Is Sho Kusakabe a villain?

At first. Sho was taken by the White-Clad as a baby and raised to lead their Knights of the Ashen Flame, and the first time he meets Shinra he fights him. Their duel in the Nether stirs memories of their family, and in the final season he breaks away from the cult and fights alongside his brother.

Who is the strongest Fire Soldier in Fire Force?
