Gurren Lagann Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Gurren Lagann, known in Japan as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, is set in a future where the Spiral King, Lordgenome, keeps humanity in isolated underground villages while his Beastmen hunt anyone who reaches the surface. Its heroes start as Team Gurren, founded in Giha village by the loud, fearless Kamina and the shy young digger Simon, who calls him Bro, and joined on the surface by the sharpshooter Yoko and the mechanic Leeron. As the team grows into Team Dai-Gurren it takes in Kittan and his sisters, the serious young Rossiu and Nia, the Spiral King's abandoned daughter, and it fights its way past Lordgenome's four generals and the proud Beastman Viral. After a seven-year time skip the old team runs the government of Kamina City and faces a far greater enemy, the Anti-Spirals. This guide covers the 27-episode TV series and keeps the final episodes' twists out.

Simon defeats him at the end of the first half, after a battle with his Gunmen Lazengann, and his last words warn of what will happen when humanity reaches one million. Gurren Lagann Character FAQs

Who is the main character of Gurren Lagann?

Simon, a shy young digger from the underground village of Giha. Kamina, the brash friend Simon calls Bro, shares the lead in the first eight episodes and is the one who drags Simon up to the surface; after Kamina's death the series becomes the story of Simon growing into a leader in his own right. Yoko and Nia are the other two main characters.

What episode does Kamina die in?

Episode 8, "Later, Buddy", whose title is one of his own lines. Kamina is mortally wounded by the general Thymilph in the battle to capture the Dai-Gunzan, the land battleship that becomes the team's base, but he combines with Simon one last time to defeat Thymilph before he dies. His last words, telling Simon to believe in himself, drive the rest of the series, and the new capital is later named Kamina City in his honour.

Who are the Four Supreme Generals in Gurren Lagann?

Lordgenome's four Beastman generals: Thymilph the Crasher, a gorilla-like warrior who commands the land battleship Dai-Gunzan; Adiane the Elegant, the only woman among them, who has a scorpion's tail; Cytomander the Swift, who leads the air forces from the flying battleship Dai-Gunten; and Guame the Immoveable, the oldest, who specialises in fighting on the ground. Their names combine the four bases of DNA with elemental spirits (thymine and sylph, adenine and undine, cytosine and salamander, guanine and gnome), and their personal Gunmen are modelled on the four mythical guardian beasts: the White Tiger, the Azure Dragon, the Vermilion Bird and the Black Tortoise.

Who is Nia in Gurren Lagann?

Nia Teppelin is the daughter of the Spiral King, Lordgenome, who threw her away in a capsule. Simon finds her in episode 9, and her kindness and honesty help him recover from Kamina's death; she later goes with him to confront her father. Seven years on she agrees to marry Simon, but when the human population reaches one million she is revealed to have been created by the Anti-Spirals and becomes their messenger, and Simon sets out to bring her back.

How old are the characters in Gurren Lagann?

At the start Simon is fourteen and Kamina eighteen. Yoko and Nia are also given as fourteen, although Yoko's village may count years differently, since everyone has been living underground. The second half jumps forward seven years, so Simon, Yoko and Nia are about twenty-one by then; Simon has grown from the smallest of the group into a tall young man.
