Inuyasha Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Inuyasha is set mostly in a fictional version of Japan's Sengoku (Warring States) period, a land of warlords, priestesses, monks and demons, with regular trips to modern Tokyo through the old well at Kagome's family shrine. Its cast gathers around the Shikon Jewel, which can make a demon far stronger and is said to grant any wish, and which Kagome shatters into shards in the second episode. On one side is Inuyasha's group, a found family of people who have each been hurt by the same enemy: the half-demon Inuyasha, the schoolgirl Kagome, the fox demon Shippo, the monk Miroku and the demon slayer Sango with her cat Kirara. On the other is Naraku, a scheming half-demon who works through puppets, barriers and incarnations he creates from his own body. In between move people who are allies one day and rivals the next: Inuyasha's half-brother Sesshomaru, the wolf-demon leader Koga, and Kikyo, the priestess Inuyasha once loved, brought back from the dead. This guide covers the original TV series and Inuyasha: The Final Act, not the films or the sequel Yashahime.
All Inuyasha Characters
Inuyasha
ProtagonistA half-demon, the son of a great dog demon and a human mother, with silver hair, golden eyes and dog ears on top of his head. Fifty years before the story he fell in love with the priestess Kikyo, until Naraku tricked them into turning on each other and she pinned him to the Sacred Tree with a sealing arrow. Freed by Kagome, he first wants the Shikon Jewel so that he can become a full demon, but as he fights beside his new friends with his father's sword Tetsusaiga, he comes to accept being half human. Proud, rude and quick to pick a fight, he will do anything to protect the people he cares about.
Kagome Higurashi
Main CastA girl from modern Tokyo who lives at her family's Shinto shrine and is dragged down its well into the past on her fifteenth birthday. She is Kikyo's reincarnation: the Shikon Jewel comes out of her body, and after she shatters it with an arrow she helps Inuyasha gather the shards, which she can sense. Kind, brave and outspoken, she becomes a skilled archer with strong purifying powers while trying to keep up with school back home, and she alone can bring Inuyasha down with the Beads of Subjugation.
Miroku
Main CastA Buddhist monk who travels the countryside performing exorcisms and carries the Wind Tunnel in his right palm, a black hole that can swallow his enemies. It is a curse that Naraku placed on his grandfather; it killed his father and will one day kill Miroku too unless Naraku is destroyed. Clever, calm and quick-witted, he is not above talking a wealthy household into a free meal and a bed, and he is something of a flirt, but he is fiercely loyal and in time falls in love with Sango.
Sango
Main CastA demon slayer, the most skilled fighter from the village where the Shikon Jewel was first kept, who fights with Hiraikotsu, a huge boomerang of purified bone, beside her two-tailed demon cat Kirara. Naraku tricked her clan into a trap that destroyed it, took her younger brother Kohaku under his control and first sent her after Inuyasha by making her blame him for the attack. Brave, responsible and level-headed, she joins the group to free Kohaku and stop Naraku, and comes to love Miroku.
Shippo
Main CastA young orphaned fox demon who first tries to steal the jewel shards from Inuyasha and Kagome to avenge his father, who was killed by the Thunder Brothers, Hiten and Manten. After the pair help him, he stays with the group for good and comes to see it as his family. He fights with fox magic and illusions, keeps scolding Inuyasha for the way he treats Kagome, and usually pays for his blunt remarks.
Kikyo
Main CastThe priestess who guarded the Shikon Jewel fifty years before the story, and Kaede's older sister. She fell in love with Inuyasha and planned to use the jewel to make him human, but Naraku, posing as each of them, turned them against each other; before she died she sealed Inuyasha to the Sacred Tree, and the jewel was burned with her body. Brought back by the witch Urasue in a body of clay and grave soil, she is kept going by the souls of the dead and follows her own lonely path against Naraku, and her bond with Inuyasha hangs over his feelings for Kagome.
Sesshomaru
Main CastInuyasha's older half-brother, a powerful, cold and proud full dog demon who scorns humans and half-demons and covets Tetsusaiga, the sword their father left to Inuyasha. He was given Tenseiga instead, a sword that seems useless in battle but can bring the dead back to life, and he travels with his servant Jaken and the orphan girl Rin, whom he revives with it. Rin slowly changes him, and over both series he moves from enemy to uneasy ally, until in The Final Act he wins a sword of his own.
Naraku
AntagonistThe main villain, a half-demon born when Onigumo, a bandit whom Kikyo and Kaede once looked after and who wanted Kikyo for himself, let a swarm of demons consume his body. Fifty years before the story he tricked Kikyo and Inuyasha into destroying each other, then waited for the Shikon Jewel to return. Cunning and patient, he hides behind puppets, disguises and barriers, creates incarnations such as Kanna and Kagura from his own body, and is behind the curse in Miroku's hand and the destruction of Sango's village.
Kagura
AntagonistNaraku's second incarnation, a sorceress who controls the wind with her fan and flies on a giant feather. Naraku keeps her heart, so she cannot openly defy him, but she longs for her freedom, now and then quietly helps Inuyasha's group, and is drawn to Sesshomaru. She killed many of the wolves in Koga's tribe, which makes Koga her sworn enemy.
Koga
SupportingThe young leader of the eastern wolf demon tribe, whose Shikon Jewel shards, set in his legs, make him astonishingly fast. He kidnaps Kagome for her ability to see the shards, then declares his love for her, and from then on he is Inuyasha's hot-tempered rival both in love and in battle. After Kagura and Naraku wipe out many of his comrades, he joins the hunt for Naraku as an occasional, reluctant ally.
Kohaku
SupportingSango's eleven-year-old younger brother, who was training as a demon slayer like the rest of his family. Naraku brings him back after the attack on their village, keeps him alive with a Shikon Jewel shard and wipes his memory, then uses him against his own sister. When his memories return he hides it from Naraku and resolves to defeat him, and in the end he reconciles with Sango.
Rin
SupportingAn orphan girl who had lost her family and who looks after the wounded Sesshomaru when she finds him under a tree. When she is killed during a raid on her village by wolves of Koga's tribe, Sesshomaru brings her back with Tenseiga, and from then on she travels with him, Jaken and the two-headed dragon she names A-Un. Her presence is a large part of why Sesshomaru changes.
Inuyasha Character FAQs
Who is the main villain of Inuyasha?
Naraku, a half-demon born when the bandit Onigumo, who wanted the priestess Kikyo for himself, gave his body to a swarm of demons. Fifty years before the story he tricked Kikyo and Inuyasha into turning on each other, and he spends the series gathering the shards of the Shikon Jewel, working through puppets, barriers and incarnations such as Kanna and Kagura. He is also behind Miroku's Wind Tunnel curse and the destruction of Sango's village.
Is Sesshomaru Inuyasha's brother?
His older half-brother. They share a father, Toga, the great dog demon who ruled the Western Lands, but Sesshomaru's mother was a dog demon and Inuyasha's was a human noblewoman, Izayoi. Their father left Tetsusaiga to Inuyasha and Tenseiga to Sesshomaru, and Sesshomaru's resentment of that, and of his half-human brother, drives their early fights.
Who is Kikyo in Inuyasha?
The priestess who guarded the Shikon Jewel fifty years before the story and the older sister of Kaede. She and Inuyasha fell in love and planned to use the jewel to make him human, but Naraku tricked them into betraying each other, and before she died she sealed Inuyasha to the Sacred Tree. Kagome is her reincarnation. The witch Urasue later brings her back in a body made of clay and grave soil, and she becomes one of Naraku's most determined enemies.
Does Inuyasha end up with Kagome?
Yes. After the final battle against Naraku the Bone Eater's Well stops working and the two are separated for three years. In the last episode of The Final Act, Kagome, by then a high-school graduate, finds that the well works again, goes back to the Sengoku period and stays with Inuyasha as his wife.
What is Miroku's Wind Tunnel?
A black hole in the palm of Miroku's right hand that can suck in demons and anything else in front of it. He keeps it sealed with prayer beads. It is a hereditary curse that Naraku placed on Miroku's grandfather, it killed Miroku's father, and it grows over time, so Miroku must destroy Naraku before it kills him too. Naraku's poisonous insects, the Saimyōshō, are often used to stop him from opening it.
