Breaking a 23-Year Tradition
The Naruto franchise is entering a new era. Studio Pierrot President Michiyuki Honma has confirmed that Boruto: Two Blue Vortex will be the first Naruto anime to adopt a seasonal format — breaking the franchise's 23-year tradition of continuous year-round broadcasting.
This is monumental. From the original Naruto in 2002 through Naruto Shippuden and into the first Boruto series, the franchise was defined by its continuous airing schedule — which, while keeping content flowing, led to infamous filler arcs and inconsistent animation quality. The seasonal approach means Pierrot will focus on quality over quantity.
Expected Release Window
The anime is expected between 2026 and 2027, though no formal premiere date has been announced. Veteran Naruto voice actors have confirmed they've been recording for Boruto's return. The most optimistic projections point to a late 2026 reveal, potentially at Anime Expo 2026, with the series itself launching shortly after.
No Filler — A Major Shift
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations animator and director Kyohei Ebata posted on social media that Two Blue Vortex is "so serious that there's no room to slip in any anime-original content." This is a massive change — the original Boruto anime stretched 80 manga chapters into 290 episodes with extensive filler. The new series is expected to cover its initial arc in just 12-13 episodes per season.
What the Manga Covers
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, written and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto under Masashi Kishimoto's supervision, features a significant time skip. The manga continues monthly in V Jump magazine, with Chapter 32 released on March 19, 2026. If the anime arrives in late 2026, approximately 41 chapters will be available for adaptation.
Naruto 20th Anniversary Special
The long-delayed Naruto 20th Anniversary anime special is scheduled to premiere in late 2026, finally ending the indefinite delay that plagued the project since late 2023. This creates a historic "Triple Crown" moment — Naruto joins One Piece and Bleach in airing new content within the same year.
The Franchise by the Numbers
Naruto's cultural impact remains unmatched in anime:
- Over 250 million manga copies sold worldwide
- 720 episodes spanning the original series and Shippuden
- Over $10 billion in total franchise revenue
- A cultural phenomenon that defined an entire generation of anime fans
