Dere Type Quiz: What Dere Are You?
Question 1 of 12
Your crush compliments you in front of your friends. You…
How this dere test decides your type
Plenty of dere quizzes tag each answer with one type and hand you whichever got tagged most. The trouble is that almost nobody is a pure anything: a single “I went quiet” answer could be a kuudere keeping their composure or a dandere too nervous to speak, and a one-label quiz has to guess which.
This one scores every answer onto all 8 types at once. A strongly characteristic answer gives its type three points; an answer that fits two types gives a point to the second as well. After 12 questions you get your top type and the share of your answers that went to every other type — your dere mix — so you can see whether you are a clear-cut tsundere or a kuudere with a tsundere streak.
The questions are about behaviour, not anime knowledge: what you do when you are complimented, when someone disagrees with you, when a rival shows up. You do not need to have watched a single series to take it.
Every dere type explained, with examples
Tsundere, Yandere, Kuudere and Dandere are the long-standing four — each has an entry in Wikipedia’s glossary of anime and manga. Deredere, Himedere, Kamidere and Bakadere are newer fan coinages, documented by anime outlets rather than dictionaries. Every character example below is one a named source calls that type; sources are listed at the bottom of the page.
Tsundere
tsun-tsun (standoffish, prickly) + dere-dere (lovestruck)Harsh or dismissive toward the person they like, warming up over time. Wikipedia describes it as a character-development arc — cold first, affectionate later — and notes that the type is not limited to female characters.
Examples: Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia) · Nobara Kugisaki (Jujutsu Kaisen) · Taiga Aisaka (Toradora!)
Yandere
yanderu (病んでる, mentally or emotionally unwell) + dere-dereSweet and affectionate at first, until the affection turns possessive or obsessive. In fiction that often escalates to violence, which is why the archetype turns up in horror as often as in romance.
Examples: Himiko Toga (My Hero Academia) · Misa Amane (Death Note) · Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)
Kuudere
kūru (クール, from the English "cool") + dere-dereStoic and expressionless, calm under pressure, affectionate through actions rather than words. Wikipedia calls it one of four popular dere types, alongside tsundere, yandere and dandere, and credits Rei Ayanami of Neon Genesis Evangelion with popularising it.
Examples: Giyu Tomioka (Demon Slayer) · Megumi Fushiguro (Jujutsu Kaisen) · Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End)
Dandere
danmari (黙り, silence) + dere-dereQuiet and asocial, often anxious about saying the wrong thing, and only really opens up to people they trust. The type most often confused with kuudere — the comparison below explains the difference.
Examples: Hinata Hyuga (Naruto) · Kanao Tsuyuri (Demon Slayer) · Tamaki Amajiki (My Hero Academia)
Deredere
dere-dere (でれでれ), Japanese onomatopoeia for being lovestruckEnergetic, cheerful and openly affectionate, without the jealousy of a yandere or the front of a tsundere. Wiktionary labels the word internet and fandom slang.
Examples: Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto) · Nezuko Kamado (Demon Slayer) · Orihime Inoue (Bleach)
Himedere
hime (姫, princess) + dere-dereActs like royalty and expects to be treated that way. Anime outlets covering the type often read the demands as a cover for insecurity.
Examples: Daki (Demon Slayer) · Minerva Orland (Fairy Tail) · Erina Nakiri (Food Wars!)
Kamidere
kami (神, god) + dere-dereA god complex: proud of their talent, convinced they are superior, sometimes certain they are destined for something divine. More often a villain or anti-hero than a love interest.
Examples: Light Yagami (Death Note) · Enel (One Piece) · Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
Bakadere
baka (馬鹿, fool or idiot) + dere-dereClumsy and a little dense, runs on feelings rather than logic, and stays kind even while making a mess of things.
Examples: Goku (Dragon Ball) · Mina Ashido (My Hero Academia)

Tsundere vs kuudere vs dandere
These three all keep their feelings hidden, so they are the ones people confuse most. The difference is why they hold back — and that is also what the quiz leans on to tell them apart.
| Type | On the surface | Why they hold back | How affection shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tsundere | Sharp, sarcastic, sometimes openly hostile | Embarrassed by their own feelings | Kind acts they immediately deny |
| Kuudere | Calm and expressionless, rarely flustered | Composure is simply their temperament | Quiet, practical help rather than words |
| Dandere | Shy, silent, avoids attention | Anxious about saying the wrong thing | Opening up and talking — once they trust you |
Dere type quiz — frequently asked questions
What is my dere type?
Take the quiz at the top of this page. It asks 12 questions about how you act around people you like, how you handle embarrassment, rivals and arguments, and scores every answer onto the 8 dere types. You get your strongest type plus your full "dere mix", so you can see how close the runner-up was. It takes about two minutes and needs no signup.
What are the main dere types?
The four with the longest history are Tsundere, Yandere, Kuudere and Dandere — each has an entry in Wikipedia's glossary of anime and manga, and Wikipedia's kuudere article names those four as the popular dere types. Fans have coined many more since; this quiz also includes Deredere, Himedere, Kamidere and Bakadere, which anime outlets such as CBR document even though dictionaries mostly do not yet.
What does "dere" mean?
It comes from dere-dere (でれでれ), Japanese onomatopoeia for being lovestruck or openly affectionate. Every dere type pairs that affection with a second word describing how the character acts — tsun-tsun (prickly), kūru (cool), danmari (silence), yanderu (mentally unwell), hime (princess), kami (god) or baka (fool).
What is the difference between a kuudere and a dandere?
Both are quiet, which is why they get mixed up, but for different reasons. A kuudere is calm and composed — they hold back emotion because that is their temperament, and they are rarely flustered. A dandere is shy — they hold back because talking makes them anxious, and they open up once they feel safe. If a character goes red and stammers, they are a dandere; if they stay expressionless under pressure, they are a kuudere.
Is the dere type quiz accurate?
It is a personality quiz for fun, not a psychological assessment, and no dere quiz can be more than that. What it does do is score consistently: identical answers always give the identical result, every type is reachable, and no type is structurally favoured — we test that the most common result under random answers wins no more than a quarter of the time. Showing your full mix instead of a single label is deliberate, because most people are a blend.
Is it bad to get yandere?
No — it means your answers leaned toward intense loyalty and devotion, which is the part of the archetype worth keeping. The fictional yandere takes that to possessive and often violent extremes, and those traits belong in anime. In a real relationship, jealousy that turns controlling is a warning sign, not a personality type.
Can I be more than one dere type?
Yes, and most people are. Even anime outlets disagree about famous characters — CBR files some under two different types in different articles. That is why your result shows the percentage split across all eight types rather than just the winner.
