Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is set in the Hidden Leaf Village years after the Fourth Great Ninja War, when Naruto Uzumaki is the Seventh Hokage and the village has trains and Scientific Ninja Tools. Its heroes are the children of Naruto's generation: his son Boruto, Sasuke and Sakura's daughter Sarada, and Mitsuki, the mysterious child of Orochimaru, who become the new Team 7 under Konohamaru Sarutobi, along with classmates such as Shikadai, Inojin, Cho-Cho and Sumire. The anime starts at the Ninja Academy, sends its cast on missions far beyond the village, and then turns to the Otsutsuki clan and Kara, the organisation that hunts for vessels bearing the Karma mark. Kawaki, a boy who escapes from Kara, comes to live with the Uzumakis, and his bond with Boruto becomes the heart of the story.
All Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Characters
Boruto Uzumaki
ProtagonistThe son of Naruto and Hinata and the older brother of Himawari: clever, cocky and fond of shortcuts, and resentful that being Hokage keeps his father away from home, so he pulls pranks to get his attention. His right eye, the Jogan, lets him see disturbed chakra. After helping to defeat Momoshiki Otsutsuki he is left with the Karma mark on his palm, which ties him to Momoshiki. He trains under Sasuke and wants to become a ninja who supports the Hokage rather than one who sits in the Hokage's chair.
Sarada Uchiha
Main CastThe daughter of Sasuke and Sakura, a serious, well-read girl who wants to become Hokage. Before graduating she sets out to meet the father she barely knows, awakens her Sharingan on the way and, for a while, wrongly believes Karin is her real mother. She is the steady one in Team 7: she learns the Chidori from Sasuke, leads the team as captain when they go to rescue Naruto, and is the only one of the three to become a chunin in the second Chunin Exams, after which she leads the team with Kawaki in it.
Mitsuki
Main CastA calm, curious transfer student who joins Boruto's Academy class and becomes the third member of Team 7. He is an artificial human made by Orochimaru, whom he calls his parent, and he left Orochimaru to find his own identity after becoming interested in Boruto. In an anime-only arc he seems to defect to rebels in the Hidden Stone, but turns out to have been working against them from the inside. He looks after a cat called Mikazuki.
Kawaki
Main CastA guarded, tattooed boy whom Team 7 finds unconscious after a Kara airship goes down; Kara calls him the Vessel. Jigen took him in as a child and gave him the Karma mark. Naruto takes him into the Uzumaki home, where he slowly opens up, mends the vase he broke and comes to see Naruto as a father. He passes his test to become a genin, joins Team 7 under Sarada and, by the last arc, will do anything to protect Naruto.
Konohamaru Sarutobi
SupportingThe grandson of the Third Hokage and Naruto's protégé, now a jonin and the leader of Team 7. He teaches Boruto the Rasengan, takes his squad through missions from bandit hunts to the fight against Victor and Deepa, and is moved by how far his students have come when Sarada's promotion means he has to leave the team. He once stands in for Naruto in a Kagemasa film and ends up stopping a real hostage-taking while still in character.
Naruto Uzumaki
SupportingThe Seventh Hokage, father of Boruto and Himawari and, later, adoptive father to Kawaki. His duties keep him away from home, which Boruto resents until the fight with Momoshiki shows him how much his father carries for the village. He takes Kawaki in against Shikamaru's advice, and against Isshiki he uses Baryon Mode, a form that costs Kurama, the Nine-Tails sealed inside him, its life. Without Kurama he is weaker, but he still stands between his family and Kara.
Sasuke Uchiha
SupportingSarada's father and Naruto's oldest rival, who spends years away from the village using his Rinnegan to search other dimensions for traces of the Otsutsuki. He agrees to teach Boruto once Boruto learns the Rasengan, fights Momoshiki, Jigen and Isshiki alongside Naruto, and loses his Rinnegan when Momoshiki takes over Boruto's body. The five "Sasuke's Story" episodes go back to an earlier mission he shared with Sakura.
Shikadai Nara
SupportingThe son of Shikamaru and Temari and Boruto's best friend since before the Academy. He finds most things a drag, but he is a sharp strategist who often gets Boruto out of trouble. He is the first of the class to be promoted to chunin, befriends Ryogi of the Byakuya Gang over games of shogi, and is pressed by his clan's chief elder to give up missions and train as a politician.
Himawari Uzumaki
SupportingBoruto's cheerful younger sister, who has her mother's Byakugan and uses it without meaning to when she is angry; on the day Naruto became Hokage, she accidentally knocked him out. She treats Kawaki as part of the family. In the anime's last Academy arc she enrols at the Ninja Academy, helps Kawaki protect a visiting princess, and comes away thinking she might want to become a ninja.
Sumire Kakei
SupportingThe shy, dutiful class representative of Boruto's Academy class, an orphan whose father, a former member of the disbanded Foundation, left her a curse mark that lets her summon the beast Nue. Raised to take revenge on the Hidden Leaf, she is behind the "ghost incidents" until Boruto talks her round. She later leaves her genin team for the Scientific Ninja Tools Team and works as Amado's assistant.
Momoshiki Otsutsuki
AntagonistA member of the Otsutsuki clan's main family who, with his subordinate Kinshiki, attacks the Chunin Exams to take the Nine-Tails' chakra from Naruto and revive a dying Divine Tree. Boruto finishes him with a giant Rasengan powered by Naruto's chakra, but as he dies he brands Boruto with the Karma, and from then on he surfaces in Boruto's body at the worst possible moments.
Jigen (Isshiki Otsutsuki)
AntagonistThe leader of Kara, a calm, polite man who took Kawaki in as a child and gave him his Karma. He is really the vessel of Isshiki Otsutsuki, a clan member betrayed by Kaguya long ago, who needs a new body because Jigen's is failing. He seals Naruto away and pushes Naruto and Sasuke to their limits before Naruto's Baryon Mode and a trick of Kawaki's finally bring him down.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Character FAQs
Who is Kawaki in Boruto?
A boy raised by Kara, whose leader Jigen gave him a Karma mark to make him the vessel for the Otsutsuki Isshiki. Team 7 finds him after a Kara airship goes down, and Naruto takes him into the Uzumaki home to keep him away from Kara. He starts out hostile and distrustful but comes to see Naruto as his father and Boruto as a brother, becomes a genin and joins Team 7. The anime's first episode opens with a glimpse of the future in which an older Kawaki faces an older Boruto in a ruined Hidden Leaf.
Who is on Team 7 in Boruto?
Boruto, Sarada and Mitsuki, led by Konohamaru Sarutobi. The squad is first numbered Team 3, but the three ask Naruto to rename it Team 7 after the team their parents were on. When Sarada becomes a chunin in the second Chunin Exams, Konohamaru leaves the team; Naruto then puts Kawaki on Team 7 under Sarada's command.
What is Boruto's eye?
It is the Jogan, or "Pure Eye", which appears in Boruto's right eye during his Academy days and lets him see disturbed chakra that nobody else can, such as the shadow possessing people in the "ghost incidents". At first Boruto thinks he has awakened his mother's Byakugan, but the Hyuga find no sign of it. The eye can also open a way into other dimensions. It is a different power from the Karma mark on his palm.
What is the Karma in Boruto?
A mark (Kama) that an Otsutsuki leaves on a chosen vessel. Amado, the Kara scientist who defects to the Hidden Leaf, explains that it is a kind of back-up of the Otsutsuki that will eventually take over the host's body. It also absorbs ninjutsu made from chakra and can open portals. Boruto gets his from the dying Momoshiki; Kawaki's comes from Isshiki through Jigen; and Code, a Kara Inner who survived the experiments meant to make him Isshiki's vessel, has a "White Karma", a failed version he can use only as a weapon.
Who is the main villain of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations?
The Otsutsuki clan, and Kara, the organisation that serves it. Momoshiki and Kinshiki attack first, at the Chunin Exams; Urashiki is the anime's own villain, hunting the tailed beasts and following Boruto and Sasuke into the past. Kara is led by Jigen, who turns out to be the vessel of Isshiki Otsutsuki, and its Inners include Delta, Boro, Victor, Deepa, Koji Kashin, Amado and Code. After Isshiki falls, Code sets out to carry on his will, which is where the anime ends.
