About Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the sequel to Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden, and its hero is Naruto Uzumaki's son. It began as a manga written by Ukyō Kodachi and drawn by Mikio Ikemoto, a former assistant of Naruto's creator Masashi Kishimoto, with Kishimoto supervising; it ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from May 2016 and moved to the monthly V Jump in July 2019, Kishimoto took over the writing in November 2020, and after its first part ended in April 2023 the story resumed that August as Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Pierrot's TV anime ran for 293 episodes on TV Tokyo from 5 April 2017 to 26 March 2023. Hiroyuki Yamashita, Toshirō Fujii and Masayuki Kōda directed it in turn, Noriyuki Abe was chief director for the first 104 episodes, Kodachi supervised the story until episode 216, and Yasuharu Takanashi and his unit Yaiba wrote the music. Episode 293 ended the anime's first part, and a second part was announced as in development.
Unlike the manga, which opens by retelling the 2015 film Boruto: Naruto the Movie, the anime begins as a prequel, with Boruto starting at the Ninja Academy in a Hidden Leaf Village that now has trains and Scientific Ninja Tools. He resents how little he sees his father, now the Seventh Hokage, and his Academy year is a run of adventures with his classmates: a 'ghost' that possesses villagers, a school trip to the Hidden Mist, and Sarada Uchiha's search for the father she barely knows. After graduation he joins Sarada and Mitsuki in the new Team 7 under Konohamaru Sarutobi, and episodes 53 to 66 retell the film: Boruto becomes Sasuke's student, cheats in the Chunin Exams with a Scientific Ninja Tool, and helps defeat Momoshiki Otsutsuki, who leaves the Karma mark on his palm.
Much of what follows is the anime's own: Mitsuki's apparent defection to rebels in the Hidden Stone is an anime-only arc, and Urashiki Otsutsuki, who chases a young Naruto into the past with Boruto and Sasuke on his trail, is the anime's own villain. Later episodes range from a prison mission at Hozuki Castle to a war with the Funato clan in the Land of Water and a five-episode 'Sasuke's Story'. The main story turns on Kara, the organisation led by Jigen, which is searching for a lost 'Vessel': Kawaki, a boy with a Karma of his own, whom Naruto takes into his family. Reviewers praised the focus on the new generation and Sasuke's growing bond with Sarada, and in a Crunchyroll report Boruto was one of the most streamed anime of 2018 in several countries, especially in Asia.

What the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Quiz Tests
Our Boruto quiz covers the 293 episodes of the TV anime, broadcast from 2017 to 2023. It uses nothing that appears only in the manga, including its second part, Two Blue Vortex, and nothing from the 2015 film or the novels beyond what the anime itself shows. Easy levels cover the basics: who made the anime, Boruto's family and Team 7, the Karma mark, Kara and Kawaki. The middle levels follow the story in order, from the Academy's ghost incidents, Sarada's search for her father and the graduation exam, through the Chunin Exams, the Otsutsuki attack and the trip into the past, to Kara, Jigen's true identity and the second Chunin Exams, with a couple of catchphrases along the way. The hard levels are for people who watched closely: Baryon Mode, Isshiki's powers, Kawaki's secret Academy mission, 'Sasuke's Story', a tattoo, a cat, a taiyaki flavour and the title of the final episode.
Key Characters
Boruto Uzumaki is a very different lead from his father: clever, cocky and happy to take a shortcut, he pulls pranks because being Hokage keeps Naruto from home, and he only starts to understand what his father carries for the village when the Otsutsuki attack. His right eye, the Jogan, sees what others cannot, and the Karma Momoshiki leaves on his palm hangs over the rest of the series. Sarada Uchiha, Sasuke and Sakura's daughter, is the dependable one in Team 7, set on becoming Hokage and the only one of the three to make chunin, while Mitsuki, Orochimaru's calm and curious artificial child, came to the Hidden Leaf to choose his own path and follows Boruto wherever he goes. Kawaki, the guarded boy Naruto rescues from Kara, slowly becomes part of the Uzumaki household and Boruto's brother in all but blood. Around them are Konohamaru Sarutobi, their teacher; Shikadai Nara, Boruto's laid-back but brilliant best friend; Himawari, the little sister whose Byakugan nobody wants to see; Sumire Kakei, the shy class representative with a secret; and Naruto and Sasuke themselves, the two heroes who once defeated Kaguya, still learning how to be fathers. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations are there?
293, broadcast on TV Tokyo from 5 April 2017 to 26 March 2023. The Japanese releases do not split the series into seasons or name its arcs, so the blocks of 52 episodes some sites use are only a convenience. Episodes 74 and 75 aired together as a one-hour special but count as two episodes.
Is Boruto finished?
The anime's first part is. It ended with episode 293, 'Farewell', on 26 March 2023, partway through the arc about Code, the Kara Inner who sets out to carry on Isshiki's will. A second part was announced as in development, but no air date had been given as of November 2026. The manga carries on: its first part ended in April 2023, and the story continued from August 2023 as Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, set three years later.
What order should I watch Boruto in?
Boruto follows Naruto (2002–2007) and Naruto: Shippuden (2007–2017), so watch those first if you want the whole story. Then watch Boruto's 293 episodes in order. The 2015 film Boruto: Naruto the Movie is optional, because episodes 53 to 66 retell its story with some changes and extra scenes. To go past episode 293, read the manga: its later chapters and Two Blue Vortex continue the story beyond the anime.
Where can I watch Boruto: Naruto Next Generations?
Viz Media licensed the anime in North America, where it was simulcast on Crunchyroll and Hulu, and an English dub of the first 52 episodes aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block from September 2018 to October 2019. In Australia it was broadcast on ABC Me from September 2019. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
