Bungo Stray Dogs Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Bungo Stray Dogs, usually shortened to BSD, takes place in a version of Yokohama where some people are born with supernatural abilities, and almost every one of those people is named after a real writer. Their powers come from the writers' own books: Osamu Dazai's ability is called No Longer Human, Ryunosuke Akutagawa's is Rashomon, and Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald's, The Great Fitzgerald, is a play on The Great Gatsby. The cast divides first into two camps. The Armed Detective Agency takes the cases too dangerous for the police; the Port Mafia runs the city's underworld at night. Several of the most important characters have been on both sides — Dazai was a Mafia executive before he was a detective, and Kyoka was a Mafia assassin before Atsushi talked her out of it. As the seasons go on, outside forces keep pushing the two rivals into the same corner: an American organisation called the Guild, a Russian strategist named Fyodor Dostoevsky, and finally a terrorist group that frames the whole Agency. This guide covers the five TV seasons only.

All Bungo Stray Dogs Characters

Atsushi Nakajima

Protagonist

An eighteen-year-old orphan, thrown out of his orphanage and close to starving, who pulls a stranger out of a river and finds it is Osamu Dazai. Dazai works out that the white tiger troubling the city is Atsushi himself and recruits him into the Armed Detective Agency. Years of abuse from the orphanage director have left him certain he is worthless, and much of the series is about him learning otherwise. A ¥7 billion bounty drags him into the Guild war, and his uneasy partnership with Akutagawa becomes one of the show's main threads.

Beast Beneath the Moonlight — turns him fully or partly into a white tigerRapid healing from the tiger, enough to regrow a severed legCombined attacks with Akutagawa's Rashomon

Osamu Dazai

Main Cast

Atsushi's mentor at the Agency and, on the surface, its least reliable member: he skives, teases Kunikida and talks constantly about wanting to die. Underneath, he is the best strategist in the series. Four years before the story he was a Port Mafia executive, until his friend Sakunosuke Oda died telling him to be on the side that saves people. Dazai arranges the alliance with the Mafia that wins the Guild war, and in seasons 4 and 5 lets himself be locked up in the prison Meursault so that he can take on Fyodor Dostoevsky directly.

No Longer Human — cancels any ability he touches, which also means Yosano cannot heal himLong-range planning and persuasionInterrogation, a speciality from his Port Mafia years

Doppo Kunikida

Main Cast

Dazai's long-suffering partner and the most orderly member of the Agency. He runs his life from a notebook he treats as his ideals, plans his day down to the train he catches, and believes nobody should die in front of him — which is why the death of a child during the Cannibalism arc nearly breaks him. In season 4 he leaps from a helicopter onto a Hunting Dog with a grenade to let his colleagues escape. Fukuzawa has already chosen him as the Agency's next president.

The Matchless Poet — makes anything he writes in his notebook real, as long as it is no bigger than the notebookPre-written emergency pages that he can trigger from a distanceUnarmed fighting learned from Fukuzawa

Ranpo Edogawa

Main Cast

The Agency's star detective, who names the culprit in seconds with what he calls Super Deduction — and who has no supernatural ability at all. Fukuzawa met him as a jobless teenager at a crime scene, handed him a pair of ordinary glasses and told him they kept his power under control; the Agency was founded so that Ranpo could work as a detective. He is childish and helpless at everyday tasks, yet in season 5 it is Ranpo who rescues his framed colleagues one by one and works out who Kamui really is.

Super Deduction — not a supernatural power, just observation and reasoning fast enough to solve a case on the spotPutting on his glasses to 'activate' itPredicting how people and the police will act

Akiko Yosano

Supporting

The Agency's doctor, cheerful and alarming in equal measure: she can only heal people once they are nearly dead, and seems to enjoy getting them there. Her ability made her a weapon as a child. During the war Ogai Mori brought her to the front as a medic so that wounded soldiers could be sent straight back to fight, and one soldier she kept saving came to call her an angel of death. Fukuzawa and Ranpo took her in, and she joined the Agency for her kindness rather than her power.

Thou Shalt Not Die — heals any external wound, but only when the patient is close to deathHealing several people at onceSurgical tools, including a hatchet and a chainsaw

Kyoka Izumi

Main Cast

A fourteen-year-old who was used as a Port Mafia assassin, killing thirty-five people in six months through a phantom that obeyed whoever spoke into her phone. Atsushi refuses to give up on her, and she earns her place in the Agency by steering the drone she is chained inside into Moby Dick. Later she learns that her parents died protecting her and that the phone had been her mother's: Demon Snow, the thing she hated most, turns out to be their love for her.

Demon Snow — summons a sword-wielding phantomUnder Fukuzawa's ability she commands it herself, without the phoneAn assassin's skill with knives

Yukichi Fukuzawa

Supporting

The founder and president of the Armed Detective Agency, a quiet swordsman once known as the Silver Wolf, the government's leading assassin. He set up the Agency after meeting the young Ranpo, with help from his old mentor, Soseki Natsume. His history with Ogai Mori runs deep: they once fought side by side, broke with each other over Yosano, and are forced into a duel to the death in the Cannibalism arc. In season 5 he faces his childhood friend Ochi Fukuchi.

All Men Are Equal — holds his official subordinates' abilities in check, giving them control over powers they could not master aloneMaster swordsmanshipUnarmed fighting — Kunikida has never once beaten him

Ryunosuke Akutagawa

Main Cast

A Port Mafia enforcer and Dazai's former apprentice, who measures his whole life by whether Dazai will ever acknowledge him. He meets Atsushi as an enemy and resents him for taking Dazai's attention, but the two are forced together again and again — against Fitzgerald, then Goncharov — until Dazai names them a new Double Black. He has a lung disease, a younger sister, Gin, in the Black Lizard, and a promise to Atsushi not to kill for six months. In season 5 he is killed by Fukuchi and raised as a vampire.

Rashomon — reshapes his coat into blades, jaws and tendrilsA barrier that swallows the space in front of him, stopping attacksArmour formed from Rashomon, which he can also wrap around Atsushi

Chuya Nakahara

Supporting

A Port Mafia executive and Dazai's former partner in Double Black, who cannot stand him. At fifteen he led a group called the Sheep and was searching for the truth about Arahabaki, which turned out to be himself, before Mori recruited him; the hat he wears was Arthur Rimbaud's. Proud and quick to anger, he is also loyal and perfectly reasonable when nobody is provoking him. Pushed far enough, he can release Corruption, a rampage that only Dazai's touch can stop.

Upon the Tainted Sorrow — controls the gravity of whatever he touches, including himselfCorruption — an all-out, self-destructive release of Arahabaki's powerBullets fired with altered gravity

Ogai Mori

Antagonist

The boss of the Port Mafia, who passes himself off as a mild doctor fussing over a little girl named Elise. He was an underground doctor and, before that, an army medic, who used the child Yosano's healing to keep soldiers fighting. He became boss by killing his predecessor, with Dazai as witness, and runs the Mafia on cold calculation. He and Fukuzawa were once allies under Natsume's Tripartite Framework, the arrangement that keeps Yokohama in balance.

Vita Sexualis — summons Elise, a girl he can shape and command, who fights with outsized medical toolsThrowing scalpels with deadly accuracyStrategy and manipulation

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Antagonist

A Russian strategist who leads the Rats in the House of the Dead and stays a step ahead of almost everyone except Dazai. He seizes control of Moby Dick, lets the Port Mafia capture him so that he can steal its list of ability users, and sets the Agency and the Mafia at each other's throats with Pushkin's virus before Dazai has him arrested. From inside Meursault he keeps pulling the strings of the Decay of the Angel, and the season 5 jailbreak game against Dazai pits the series' two sharpest minds against each other.

A lethal touch — a soldier who grabs him during his arrest dies on the spotOrders hidden in classical music played on the radioManipulation and long-range planning

Ochi Fukuchi

Antagonist

The captain of the Hunting Dogs, a celebrated war hero, a heavy drinker and Fukuzawa's childhood friend. In season 5 Ranpo exposes him as Kamui, the hidden leader of the Decay of the Angel and the man who framed the Agency. His aim is to command the world's armies through the Army of Mankind and the sealed weapon One Order — by his own account to end war for good, after his sword showed him a world war still to come.

Mirror Lion — multiplies the power of any weapon he holds a hundredfoldShinto Amenogozen — a sword that cuts through space and can reach a few seconds into the pastDecades of battlefield experience

Bungo Stray Dogs Character FAQs

What does BSD stand for?

BSD is the fans' shorthand for Bungo Stray Dogs. 'Bungo' is a Japanese word for a classic author, so the title works out roughly as 'Literary Stray Dogs' — a nod to the fact that the cast is named after real writers.

Are the Bungo Stray Dogs characters based on real writers?

Yes. Almost every character is named after a real author, mostly from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and their abilities are named after those authors' works. Atsushi's tiger comes from Atsushi Nakajima's story 'The Moon Over the Mountain', in which a man becomes a tiger; Lucy Montgomery's ability, Anne of Abyssal Red, comes from Anne of Green Gables. Sigma is one of the few exceptions.

Who are Double Black?

Double Black (also translated Twin Dark) was the Port Mafia partnership of Osamu Dazai and Chuya Nakahara: Chuya's destructive power, and Dazai's ability to switch it off. They reunite for a night during the Guild war. In season 5 Dazai describes Atsushi and Akutagawa as a new generation of the pair.

Why did Dazai leave the Port Mafia?

Because of Sakunosuke Oda. Oda, a low-ranking mafioso and one of Dazai's only friends, died after a duel with the leader of the group Mimic in a situation Mori had engineered, and his last words told Dazai to be on the side that saves people. Dazai left the Mafia soon afterwards and was later recommended to the Armed Detective Agency.

Who is the main villain of Bungo Stray Dogs?

It changes with each arc. Seasons 1 and 2 are dominated by Fitzgerald and the Guild, season 3 by Fyodor Dostoevsky and the Rats in the House of the Dead, and seasons 4 and 5 by the Decay of the Angel, whose leader Kamui turns out to be Ochi Fukuchi, captain of the Hunting Dogs.
