Kamisama Kiss Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Kamisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita in Japanese) is set around Mikage Shrine, a run-down shrine in an ordinary Japanese town, and the world of gods and yokai just beyond it. At its centre are Nanami Momozono, a homeless high school girl who becomes the shrine's land god, and Tomoe, the fox yokai who serves her as her familiar after she seals their contract with a kiss. Around them are the shrine's two masked spirits, Onikiri and Kotetsu; Mizuki, a white snake who becomes her second familiar; Kurama, a crow tengu working as a pop idol at her school; Mikage, the god who gave her the shrine; and her school friends Ami Nekota and Kei Ueshima. Among the gods are the wind god Otohiko, the thunder goddess Narukami and Ookuninushi, host of the gods' yearly assembly at Izumo, while season 2 brings Akura-ou, living in the body of a young man called Kirihito, and the tengu of Mount Kurama. This guide covers the two TV seasons, 25 episodes in all.
All Kamisama Kiss Characters
Nanami Momozono
ProtagonistA cheerful, headstrong high school girl who is left homeless when her father runs off to escape his gambling debts. In a park she rescues a stranger, Mikage, from a dog; he gives her his home and his land god's mark with a kiss on the forehead, and the home turns out to be a run-down shrine. With no powers at first, she learns to use white talismans, binds the fox yokai Tomoe as her familiar with a kiss and slowly wins over the gods and yokai who look down on a human god. She refuses to accept that a human and a yokai can never love each other.
Tomoe
Main CastA fox yokai who has served Mikage Shrine as its familiar for centuries and kept it going alone for the twenty years since Mikage left. When a human girl turns up bearing Mikage's mark he walks out, but she binds him to her with a kiss in the first episode. Cool-headed, mocking and sharp-tongued, he grumbles at Nanami constantly yet protects her at every turn, and in season 1's last episode he renews their contract of his own free will. Long ago, as a wild fox, he was the partner of the great yokai Akura-ou, and he once loved a human woman, Yukiji. He insists that a yokai and a human must never fall in love, which makes his feelings for Nanami hard for him to admit.
Mizuki
Main CastA white snake yokai who served Yonomori Shrine and looked after it alone for years after its water god, Yonomori Mitsuha, died. When Nanami saves him at school he leaves a betrothal mark on her wrist and carries her off to his shrine, where she turns down his proposal but promises to visit him when he is lonely. On the trip into the past to find the Dragon King's eye he kisses her to become her familiar and save her, then moves into Mikage Shrine, much to Tomoe's dismay. Clingy, mischievous and clumsy but hard to dislike, he is forever competing with Tomoe.
Kurama
Main CastA crow tengu from Mount Kurama who lives among humans as KURAMA, a hugely popular idol with a 'fallen angel' image. He transfers to Nanami's school meaning to take her place as land god, until Tomoe turns him into an ostrich and Nanami treats his wound. After that he becomes her friend, and he takes her and the shrunken Tomoe in when Narukami seizes the shrine. In season 2 the young tengu Botanmaru brings him home to Mount Kurama, where his father, the third Sōjōbō, lies ill and the elder tengu want him as the fourth. His real name is Shinjūrō.
Mikage
SupportingThe land god of Mikage Shrine, a gentle, mysterious man with light hair and glasses who walked away from his shrine twenty years before the story begins. Rescued from a dog by Nanami, he hands her his home and his mark with a kiss on the forehead and disappears again, leaving Tomoe furious. Long ago he took the wild fox Tomoe in as his familiar, and a flashback shows that he halted a curse on Tomoe by making him forget his past. Nanami finally finds him at the Divine Assembly, where he tells her he hoped that living with her would rekindle Tomoe's care for humans.
Onikiri and Kotetsu
SupportingThe two shrine spirits of Mikage Shrine, will-o'-the-wisp children who never show their faces: Kotetsu wears a hyottoko mask and Onikiri an okame mask. They welcome Nanami to the shrine, explain a land god's duties to her, including keeping written records of people's prayers, and help her slip past three demons on her first trip to find Tomoe. They adore Nanami, Tomoe, Mizuki and Mikage, and in season 2 Kotetsu returns Tomoe to his full yokai form so that he can break through into the Netherworld.
Ami Nekota
SupportingNanami's classmate and first friend at school, a sweet, bubbly girl with a slight sixth sense that lets her see yokai. After a demon attack at school she wants to thank Kurama for helping her, and Nanami uses a white talisman to give the two of them a moment alone; Ami has had a crush on the idol ever since. She and her sharp-tongued best friend, Kei Ueshima, bring Nanami along on their outings, including a trip to the beach.
Himemiko of the Swamp
SupportingA catfish yokai who rules Isara Swamp in Mikage Shrine's lands and a friend of Mikage's. Ten years ago she fell for a human boy, Kotarō Urashima, and she asks Nanami to help her see him again, although Tomoe insists that love between a yokai and a human is forbidden. Tomoe gives her the form of a human girl, and a white talisman from Nanami gives the shy Kotarō the courage to stand up for her. In season 2 she cheers up a downhearted Nanami with a day out in town.
Otohiko
SupportingThe wind god and an old friend of Mikage, who talks in a theatrical, feminine style and keeps a close eye on Nanami's progress. At first he doubts that a human can be a land god and tests her by releasing miasma on the shrine before her festival. In season 2 he brings her the summons to the Divine Assembly, sets the shikigami test she must pass to attend and, as punishment for arriving late himself, goes with her to Yomotsu Hirasaka, the entrance to the Netherworld.
Mamoru
SupportingNanami's shikigami in season 2, hatched from an egg nourished by her own energy during Otohiko's test. He first appears as a tiny monkey, which she names Mamoru, meaning 'to protect', and he can also take the form of a small boy. His power to purify lets Nanami drive off a dark presence at school, beat the fallen gods who press her to stay away from the Divine Assembly and overcome Yatori on Mount Kurama.
Akura-ou (Kirihito)
AntagonistA great yokai who made his name alongside Tomoe six hundred years ago. His own body lies asleep in the Netherworld, and his soul lives in the body of Kirihito Mori, a young climber who died in an avalanche and asked him to take it over so that an apology could reach his mother. As Kirihito he crosses Nanami's path in season 2 and falls into the Netherworld with her, and with his new follower Yatori he keeps trying to recover his original body. He resents Tomoe for leaving him for a human girl.
Jirō
AntagonistThe stern tengu who runs Mount Kurama while the third Sōjōbō, Kurama's father, lies ill, and the candidate to become the fourth. Strict with himself and everyone around him, he finds Nanami at the sacred cherry tree in a village closed to women, and raises a barrier around the compound that she has to break. When they meet the thunder beast he is badly hurt shielding her and confesses his feelings, and once the mountain recovers he asks her to stay among the cherry blossoms a little longer.
Kamisama Kiss Character FAQs
Who is the main character of Kamisama Kiss?
Nanami Momozono, a cheerful high school girl who is left homeless when her father runs away from his gambling debts and becomes the land god of Mikage Shrine after its god, Mikage, kisses her on the forehead. The other lead is Tomoe, the fox yokai who becomes her familiar. Most episodes follow Nanami as she tries to do the job properly while still going to school, with Tomoe grumbling and protecting her in equal measure.
What is Tomoe in Kamisama Kiss?
A fox yokai who serves as the familiar, or shinshi, of Mikage Shrine: a god's spirit servant. Mikage took him in centuries ago, and Tomoe kept the shrine going alone for twenty years after Mikage left. Before that he was a wild fox and the partner of the great yokai Akura-ou, and the Dragon King has waited 526 years to settle a score with him over his stolen right eye. Tomoe commands fox-fire and can transform himself and others.
How does the familiar contract work in Kamisama Kiss?
A god binds a yokai as a familiar with a kiss, which is how Nanami makes Tomoe hers in the first episode. Once he is bound, she can use word binding to make him obey her even against his will. The contract can be renewed: Tomoe reseals it with a kiss after Narukami's attempt to take him, and again, this time from the heart, at the end of season 1. Mizuki becomes Nanami's second familiar the same way, to save her during the trip into the past.
Who is Kurama in Kamisama Kiss?
A crow tengu who left Mount Kurama and lives in the human world as KURAMA, a famous idol with a 'fallen angel' image. He joins Nanami's school planning to take her place as land god, but after Tomoe stops him and Nanami treats his wound he becomes her friend. In season 2 he returns to Mount Kurama, where his father, the third Sōjōbō, has fallen ill and the elder tengu want him as their next leader. His real name is Shinjūrō.
Do Tomoe and Nanami fall in love in the anime?
Their feelings grow over both seasons. Tomoe turns down Nanami's confession in season 1, saying a yokai and a human must not be together, yet he renews their contract from the heart in the season 1 finale. In season 2 he answers her sleepy confession only in silence, and in the last episode, inside the Year God's gate, he asks the little girl Nanami once was to marry him; back home, she slowly works out that he was the one who made her that promise. Their story carries on in the OADs that followed the TV series.
