About Kamisama Kiss
Kamisama Kiss is the English title of Kamisama Hajimemashita, which Wikipedia translates as "I've Started the 'Being a God' Thing". It began as a shōjo manga written and drawn by Julietta Suzuki for Hakusensha's magazine Hana to Yume, where it ran from February 2008 to May 2016; its 149 chapters fill 25 volumes, published in English by Viz Media under its Shojo Beat imprint, and by March 2016 it had five million copies in print. TMS Entertainment adapted it for TV Tokyo under director Akitaro Daichi: a 13-episode first season aired from October to December 2012, and a 12-episode second season, Kamisama Hajimemashita◎, from January to March 2015. Seven OVA episodes were released between 2013 and 2016, among them the four-part Kako-hen, or 'Past Arc'.
Nanami Momozono is a high school girl with nowhere to live: her father has run off to escape his gambling debts, and the debt collectors have put her out of their apartment. When she rescues a stranger called Mikage from a dog in the park, he offers her his house and kisses her on the forehead. The house turns out to be a crumbling shrine, and the kiss has left her with the mark of its land god. Waiting there are the shrine spirits Onikiri and Kotetsu and Tomoe, a fox yokai who has served the shrine for centuries and wants nothing to do with a human mistress, until Nanami, cornered by a demon in the forest, kisses him to seal the familiar contract. From then on she juggles school with answering people's prayers, while yokai after her divine power, a white snake called Mizuki who wants her as his bride and a crow tengu idol called Kurama keep turning up.
At the heart of the series is the question of whether a human and a yokai can love each other. Tomoe says they must not; Nanami refuses to accept it, and the couples she helps, beginning with the catfish yokai Himemiko and her human Kotarō, make her case for her. Season 1 ends with a festival that Nanami holds to bring visitors back to the shrine. Season 2 takes her to the gods' Divine Assembly at Izumo, into the Netherworld with a mysterious young man called Kirihito, up Mount Kurama to help Kurama's ailing father, and through the Year God's gates into her own childhood, as Tomoe slowly admits to himself what she means to him.

What the Kamisama Kiss Quiz Tests
Our Kamisama Kiss quiz covers the 25 episodes of the TV anime: season 1 (2012) and season 2, Kamisama Hajimemashita◎ (2015). It leaves out the OVAs and anything found only in the manga. Easy levels cover the basics: who made the series, Mikage Shrine, how Nanami becomes a land god and how she binds Tomoe, and the main cast of gods, yokai and classmates. The middle levels follow the story in order, from Kurama's arrival at school, Mizuki's shrine and Narukami's raid, through the aquarium date, the Dragon King's eye and the festival, to the Divine Assembly, Mount Kurama and the Year God's gates. The hard levels are for close watchers: how long the Dragon King has waited for revenge, what Kotarō leaves with Himemiko, where Tomoe hides from Narukami, how Mikage saved Tomoe, the question Kirihito asks in the Netherworld, the word that ends season 2 and the symbol in season 2's Japanese title.
Key Characters
Nanami Momozono starts the story with no powers and nowhere else to go. Kind, stubborn and quick to make promises she has not thought through, she grows from a homeless schoolgirl into a land god whom other gods start to respect. Tomoe, her fox familiar, is her opposite: centuries old, cool and sarcastic, hard on everyone and devoted to the shrine he kept going alone for twenty years, with a past as a wild fox that the series uncovers bit by bit. Mizuki, a white snake who once looked after an empty shrine of his own, joins the household as her second familiar and Tomoe's constant rival, while Kurama, a crow tengu passing as a pop idol, goes from would-be thief of her title to loyal friend. Mikage, the wandering god who started it all, appears only now and then, often watching from a distance with his old friend Otohiko, the wind god. The masked shrine spirits Onikiri and Kotetsu, Nanami's school friends Ami and Kei and the gods and yokai who call at the shrine fill out the cast, and season 2 adds the shikigami Mamoru, the troubled Kirihito and the tengu of Mount Kurama. Kamisama Kiss Fun Facts
- The season 1 website introduces director Akitaro Daichi through his earlier work, Fruits Basket among it, and Anime News Network's Jacob Chapman described Kamisama Kiss as a 50/50 cross between Inuyasha and Fruits Basket.
- Hanae sings all four of the TV series' theme songs, and season 1's opening is named after the series itself, "Kamisama Hajimemashita". The official sites credit the season 1 songs to EMI Music and the season 2 songs to Universal Music.
- Most of the Japanese episode titles start with "Kamisama", the god, followed by what Nanami gets up to: "Kamisama, Nerawareru" is "The God Becomes a Target". Season 1's last episode simply takes the series' own title, and season 2 opens with "Kamisama Mata Hajimemashita", "I've Started the 'Being a God' Thing Again".
- Both seasons' cast lists include a kōshakushi, a traditional storyteller: Vanilla Yamazaki is credited as the series' storyteller.
- A stage musical, Kamisama Hajimemashita: The Musical, ran from 21 to 29 March 2015, as season 2 was ending on TV, and Akira Ishida, the anime's Mikage, made a cameo in it by voice.

Kamisama Kiss Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes of Kamisama Kiss are there?
Twenty-five TV episodes in two seasons: 13 in season 1, which TV Tokyo aired from October to December 2012, and 12 in season 2, from January to March 2015. TV Tokyo listed both seasons in a Monday late-night slot (26:05, just after 2 a.m. on the Tuesday), so some sources date each episode a day later. There are also seven OVA episodes outside that count: two released in August 2013 with the 16th manga volume, the four-part Kako-hen from August 2015 to August 2016, and Kamisama, Shiawase ni Naru in December 2016.
Is Kamisama Kiss finished?
Yes. The manga ended in May 2016 after 149 chapters in 25 volumes, and the anime's last release was the Kamisama, Shiawase ni Naru OVA in December 2016; no anime has been added since, although Crunchyroll began streaming the OVAs in July 2026. The two TV seasons do not adapt the whole manga: the Kako-hen OVAs adapt the 'past arc' from volumes 14 to 17, and the manga is the place for everything the anime leaves out.
What order should I watch Kamisama Kiss in?
Release order works best: season 1 (13 episodes), the two 2013 OVAs, season 2 (12 episodes), the four Kako-hen OVAs and finally Kamisama, Shiawase ni Naru. The 2013 OVAs came out between the seasons; one adapts a story from the 15th manga volume and the other is an original story. Kako-hen adapts the past arc from volumes 14 to 17, later in the manga than season 2 goes, so it belongs after season 2.
Where can I watch Kamisama Kiss?
Funimation licensed the anime for streaming and home video in North America, where Funimation Channel also aired it, and an English dub was made; the licence now sits with Crunchyroll, which began streaming the OVAs in July 2026. Madman holds the series in Australia, where ABC3 broadcast it, MVM Films in the United Kingdom, and Animax Asia aired it in South East Asia. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
