KonoSuba Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! is set in a fantasy world run like a role-playing game, where adventurers register at a guild, carry cards that show their stats and buy skills with the points they earn, while the Devil King and his eight generals threaten humanity. Most of the story happens in Axel, the kingdom of Belzerg's town for beginners, and it centres on one badly matched party: Kazuma, a Japanese shut-in who died in a ridiculous accident, the goddess Aqua, whom he dragged into this world with him, Megumin, a wizard who knows a single spell, and Darkness, a knight who cannot hit anything. Around them are the people of Axel, from Wiz the shopkeeping lich and her partner Vanir to Megumin's rival Yunyun and the thief Chris, a handful of the Devil King's generals, and, in season 3, the royal court in the capital. This guide covers the three TV seasons and the film Legend of Crimson, not the OVAs or the spin-off.
All KonoSuba Characters
Kazuma Satou
ProtagonistA 17-year-old shut-in gamer who dies of shock when he mistakes a slow tractor for a speeding truck, and is sent to the fantasy world with the goddess Aqua, whom he picks as his one item out of spite. His stats are average apart from a sharp mind and very high luck, so he becomes a plain Adventurer, and he makes up for it by learning basic skills from other people and combining them into underhanded but effective plans. Lazy, greedy and always complaining about his party, he still steps up when they are in real trouble, and he gets rich by designing products from Japan that Vanir sells for him.
Aqua
Main CastThe goddess of water, who guided the souls of the dead until Kazuma took her with him to the new world, where she cannot go home until the Devil King is defeated. As an Arch Priest she is the strongest member of the party, able to heal, purify the undead and even bring the dead back to life, but her intelligence and luck are low, she spends her skill points on party tricks and her money as soon as she has it, and she bursts into tears when things go wrong. She is the goddess of the Axis Cult, whose followers in Arcanretia do not believe her when she tells them who she is.
Megumin
Main CastAn arch wizard of the Crimson Demons, a clan of red-eyed wizards with a taste for dramatic poses and grand introductions. She refuses to learn any spell but Explosion, the most powerful there is, which drains her completely after one cast, so someone usually has to carry her home. Theatrical, competitive and fond of strange names, she wears her eyepatch purely for show, yet Kazuma considers her the most sensible member of the party. Legend of Crimson takes the party to her home village, and she is the lead of the spin-off An Explosion on This Wonderful World!.
Darkness
Main CastA crusader so strong and tough that she can shrug off monsters' attacks and even survive one of Megumin's Explosions, but so inaccurate that she can almost never land a hit, which makes her the party's shield rather than its sword. She is really Lalatina, the daughter of the noble Dustiness family, a name she would rather nobody used, and she became a crusader against her father's wishes. Serious and selfless whenever her friends or the people of Axel are in danger, she is at the centre of season 3, when a debt her family owes forces her into a marriage with the lord of Axel.
Wiz
SupportingA kind, timid lich who runs a magic shop in Axel and is also one of the Devil King's generals, though her only task is keeping up the barrier around his castle and she never harms anyone. A powerful wizard, she teaches Kazuma Drain Touch, helps stop the Destroyer with Explosion and Teleport, and keeps to an agreement not to fight the Devil King's army as long as it leaves non-combatants alone. Her shop never makes money, because she keeps buying stock that nobody wants.
Vanir
SupportingA masked devil, one of the dukes of hell and a general of the Devil King, who can see into people's minds and enjoys feeding on their disappointment. The party destroys his body in Keele's Dungeon in season 2, but he has a spare life, quits the Devil King's army and becomes the manager of Wiz's shop, where he sells the products Kazuma designs and tells fortunes. He feuds endlessly with Aqua, and in season 3 the deal he offers Kazuma is the key to saving Darkness.
Yunyun
SupportingMegumin's former classmate and the daughter of the Crimson Demon village's chief. Unlike the rest of her clan she has a perfectly normal personality, which left her lonely, and she calls herself Megumin's rival largely as a way of staying friends with her. A highly skilled arch wizard who, unlike Megumin, uses many spells, she first rescues the party from giant toads in season 2, joins them on the trip to the Crimson Demon Village in Legend of Crimson and co-stars in the spin-off.
Chris
SupportingDarkness's friend, a cheerful thief who teaches Kazuma the Steal skill in the first season. Her luck is even better than his. In season 3 she turns out to be the mysterious Chivalrous Thief who robs corrupt nobles in the capital, hunting for Divine Treasures, the special items given to the Japanese people sent to this world, and Kazuma ends up helping her take a dangerous one from the royal palace.
Iris
SupportingThe 12-year-old first princess of Belzerg, who has lived a sheltered life in the royal palace. In season 3 she invites Kazuma's party to dinner to hear their adventure stories, then pulls Kazuma along when she teleports home, and while he stays at the palace she comes to treat him as an older brother. A body-swapping necklace and a ring meant for the person she will marry both tie her to the season's events.
Kyouya Mitsurugi
SupportingAnother Japanese teenager whom Aqua sent to this world, armed with the cursed sword Gram that she gave him. He sees himself as the ideal hero and Aqua as a dignified goddess, and is outraged at how Kazuma treats her, so he challenges him to a duel, loses and finds that Kazuma has sold his sword. He travels with two devoted companions and, in season 3, is called to the capital to help guard it.
Verdia
AntagonistA dullahan, the headless knight among the Devil King's generals, who keeps something of a knight's sense of honour. He storms up to Axel because Megumin has been casting Explosion on his castle every day, and lays a death curse on Darkness that Aqua promptly lifts. When he returns with an army of undead, Kazuma works out that he is weak against water: Aqua's flood weakens him, Kazuma snatches his head and Aqua finishes him with Turn Undead.
Alderp
AntagonistAlderp Alexei Barnes, the greedy lord of Axel, whose mansion is destroyed when the Destroyer's core lands on it. At Kazuma's trial he pushes the judge towards a death sentence until Darkness intervenes, and in season 2 he tries to arrange her marriage to his son, Walther. In season 3 he uses the debt the Dustiness family owes him to force Darkness to marry him himself, with a demon, Maxwell, secretly bound to serve him through a Divine Treasure; when that falls apart he disappears and his crimes come to light.
KonoSuba Character FAQs
Who is the main character of KonoSuba?
Kazuma Satou, a teenage shut-in from Japan who dies of shock after mistaking a slow tractor for a speeding truck. Sent to a fantasy world with the goddess Aqua, he becomes an adventurer of the most basic class and gets by on luck, cunning and skills borrowed from other people, while doing his best to avoid actually fighting the Devil King.
Who is in Kazuma's party?
Kazuma himself, an Adventurer; Aqua, the goddess of water, an Arch Priest who heals and purifies; Megumin, a Crimson Demon arch wizard who only ever casts Explosion; and Darkness, a crusader who protects the others but can barely land a hit. Each is powerful in one way and hopeless in another, which is the joke the whole series is built on.
Why does Megumin only use Explosion magic?
Because she loves it. She considers Explosion the most powerful and useful spell there is, puts every skill point she earns into it and refuses to learn anything else, even though one cast leaves her unable to move. The spin-off An Explosion on This Wonderful World! shows where it started: as a little girl she was saved by a mysterious mage casting Explosion, and set her heart on learning it.
Who are the Devil King's generals in the KonoSuba anime?
The Devil King has eight generals. The anime's party meets Verdia, a dullahan, in season 1; Wiz, a lich who keeps up the barrier around the Devil King's castle but otherwise stays out of the war, also in season 1; Vanir, a masked devil, and Hans, a deadly poison slime, in season 2; and Sylvia, a growth chimera, in the film Legend of Crimson.
Is Aqua really a goddess?
Yes. She is the goddess of water, who guided the dead to the afterlife before Kazuma dragged her into his new life, and the patron goddess of the Axis Cult. Hardly anyone believes her, though: her own followers in the hot-spring town of Arcanretia take her for an impostor when she tells them who she is, and her junior, the goddess Eris, is far more widely worshipped.
