About KonoSuba
KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!), almost always shortened to KonoSuba, began as a web novel that Natsume Akatsuki posted on the site Shōsetsuka ni Narō from December 2012 to October 2013. Kadokawa then published it as a light novel series illustrated by Kurone Mishima, 17 volumes from October 2013 to May 2020, released in English by Yen Press; by November 2021 the novels had 10 million copies in circulation. The anime was made by Studio Deen, directed by Takaomi Kanasaki and written by Makoto Uezu, with character designs by Koichi Kikuta and music by Masato Kōda. Its first season aired on Tokyo MX from January to March 2016 and its second from January to March 2017. J.C.Staff made the film Legend of Crimson (2019), and Drive took over for the third season, which aired from April to June 2024: 31 TV episodes in all.
The story begins with a death that is more embarrassing than heroic. Kazuma Satou, a teenage shut-in who lives for video games, tries to push a girl out of the path of what he thinks is a speeding truck. It is a slow tractor, and he dies of shock. In the afterlife the goddess Aqua offers him a new life in a fantasy world run like a role-playing game, where a Devil King threatens humanity, and lets him take any item or power he likes. Fed up with her mockery, he chooses Aqua herself, and the two land in the beginners' town of Axel, where she cannot go home until the Devil King is defeated. Kazuma's stats only qualify him for the basic Adventurer class, so they recruit help: Megumin, a Crimson Demon arch wizard who knows a single spell, Explosion, and collapses after casting it once a day, and Darkness, a crusader from a noble family who can withstand almost any attack but can barely land a hit. Kazuma soon gives up on saving the world and tries to live comfortably, but debts, odd jobs and bad luck keep dragging his party into fights with the Devil King's generals.
Akatsuki set out to write a fantasy that worked against what readers expect of the genre. He drew on games such as Wizardry and Final Fantasy and on tabletop role-playing, and built the party on the basic structure of a Dragon Quest party, but gave every member a major flaw. The comedy comes from that gap: the hero is a grumbling schemer, the goddess is a liability, and the party worries more about money and debt than about destiny, yet the four keep choosing each other. Critics praised the deadpan humour and the voice cast, while the deliberately loose, off-model animation divided opinion. The first season was voted the tenth-best TV anime in Newtype's 2015–16 awards and was runner-up for best comedy at Crunchyroll's first Anime Awards, and in 2019 fans voted KonoSuba the isekai series of the decade in Funimation's Decade of Anime poll.

What the KonoSuba Quiz Tests
Our KonoSuba quiz covers the 31 episodes of the TV anime, seasons 1, 2 and 3, and the film Legend of Crimson. It does not ask about the OVAs, the spin-off An Explosion on This Wonderful World!, Isekai Quartet, the games or anything found only in the light novels, and it leaves out the series' fan-service gags entirely. Easy levels cover the basics: who made the series, how Kazuma dies and what he takes with him, Axel, the party's classes, Megumin's one spell and what it costs her, and the people around them. The middle levels follow the story in order, from the cabbage harvest, Verdia and Mitsurugi's duel through the Destroyer and Kazuma's trial to Vanir, Arcanretia, the trip to the Crimson Demon Village and the princess of season 3. The hard levels are for people who watched closely and read the credits: where the story was first published, how the character designer approached the look of the show, Kazuma's katana, how the film ends, and the season 3 finale.
Key Characters
Kazuma Satou is an unusual hero for a fantasy story: lazy, greedy and quick to complain, with average stats apart from a sharp mind and very high luck, and cunning enough to combine the basic skills he picks up from other people, such as Steal from the thief Chris and Drain Touch from Wiz, into plans that win fights his party should lose. Aqua, the goddess of water he dragged along, is a powerful Arch Priest who can heal, purify and even bring the dead back, yet she is vain, careless, hopeless with money and quick to cry, and she spends her skill points on party tricks. Megumin, a Crimson Demon with a flair for drama and strange names, refuses to learn anything but Explosion, the most powerful spell there is, which leaves her flat on the ground after one cast. Darkness, really Lalatina of the noble Dustiness family, is the party's shield, strong and nearly impossible to hurt but almost unable to hit anything. Around them are Wiz, a gentle lich and former general of the Devil King who runs a magic shop that never makes money; Vanir, a masked, mind-reading devil who becomes her shop's manager and Kazuma's business partner; Yunyun, Megumin's lonely, self-proclaimed rival; Kyouya Mitsurugi, another Japanese teenager Aqua sent to this world, who plays the classic hero far more seriously than Kazuma; and in season 3 Iris, the young princess who comes to see Kazuma as a big brother.

KonoSuba Fun Facts
- Natsume Akatsuki heard that KonoSuba would be made into an anime over the phone. In January 2015 he was called to a meeting in Tokyo, but he was living in Fukui Prefecture at the time and could not leave because his house was buried in snow.
- Akatsuki has said that he came up with his pen name while playing the game Kantai Collection. He first posted KonoSuba online under a different name, Jitakukeibihei, and took the web novel down in December 2013 once it was being published as a book.
- The anime's two chief animation directors took turns: Koichi Kikuta on the odd-numbered episodes and Momoka Komatsu on the even-numbered ones. Komatsu's drawings stayed close to the novels' illustrations, while Kikuta based his on children's shows such as Pokémon. He said the off-model look many viewers noticed was deliberate, a way of showing the characters' unflattering, more human sides.
- Megumin was first going to have long hair like the rest of the main cast. Because all the girls already had long hair, she was given a boyish short cut instead, along with fingerless gloves, bandages, a red-and-black colour scheme and an eyepatch she wears purely for looks.
- Jun Fukushima, Kazuma's Japanese voice, began ad-libbing during test recordings: whenever another character started a sentence with Kazuma's name, he cut in to answer, as people tend to do in real life. Many of those ad-libs ended up in the final scripts.
- Akatsuki modelled the party on the basic structure of a Dragon Quest party, but gave each member a major flaw. Megumin, he said, is like a Dragon Quest mage who only ever wants to use the all-or-nothing spell Magic Burst, with little thought for anyone else.
KonoSuba Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes of KonoSuba are there?
Thirty-one TV episodes in three seasons: 10 in season 1 (January to March 2016), 10 in season 2 (January to March 2017) and 11 in season 3 (April to June 2024). There are also four OVAs, one after each of the first two seasons and two shown together in Japanese cinemas in March 2025, and the film Legend of Crimson (2019). The 12-episode spin-off An Explosion on This Wonderful World! (2023) is counted separately.
Is KonoSuba finished?
The light novels are: the main series ended with its 17th volume in May 2020. The anime is not. The first two seasons adapt the first four volumes, Legend of Crimson the fifth and season 3 the sixth and seventh. A fourth season has been announced, produced by the studio ENGI and directed by Manabu Kurihara, with Takaomi Kanasaki returning as chief director, and it is due in 2027.
What order should I watch KonoSuba in?
Watch season 1, season 2, the film Legend of Crimson and then season 3. The film is not optional: season 3 opens with Kazuma still shaken by the battle with Sylvia, the general the party fights in the film. Each season's OVAs are light side stories best watched after that season. The spin-off An Explosion on This Wonderful World! is a prequel about Megumin's school days a year before the main story; it can be watched at any time, but it means more once you know her from the main series.
Where can I watch KonoSuba?
Crunchyroll licenses the series for streaming: it simulcast the first season in North America, added English dubs of the first two seasons in 2019 and 2020, and also streams the film, season 3 and the spin-off. Discotek Media released the first two seasons on Blu-ray in North America, Anime Limited handles home video in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Medialink holds the rights in Southeast Asia. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
What is KonoSuba about?
It follows Kazuma Satou, a teenage shut-in who dies in a ridiculous accident and is sent to a fantasy world run like a role-playing game, taking the goddess Aqua with him out of spite. There he forms a party with Megumin, a wizard who knows only one, enormous spell, and Darkness, a knight who can take any hit but cannot land one. It is a comedy that sends up the isekai genre: instead of becoming a chosen hero, Kazuma spends his time paying off debts, cleaning up his companions' disasters and stumbling into the Devil King's generals anyway.
