Kuroko's Basketball Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Kuroko's Basketball — Kuroko no Basket, or KNB, to many fans — is built around one legendary middle-school team and the people who scattered from it. At Teiko Middle School five prodigies, the Generation of Miracles, won three national titles in a row. In high school each of them went to a different school, and each became the ace of a new team. Each has one overwhelming gift: Kise copies, Midorima shoots from anywhere, Aomine scores from any angle, Murasakibara blocks everything, and Akashi sees what you will do before you do it. The sixth member, a player so easy to overlook that most people forgot he was there, is Tetsuya Kuroko. He joins Seirin, a team barely a year old, made up of first- and second-years, with a student as its coach. With his new partner Taiga Kagami he takes on his former teammates one school at a time. Around the Miracles stand the Uncrowned Kings, five gifted players who were overshadowed by them, and a set of rival captains, managers and coaches. This guide covers the three seasons of the TV anime.

All Kuroko's Basketball Characters

Tetsuya Kuroko

Protagonist

A first-year at Seirin and the rumoured phantom sixth man of the Generation of Miracles, so lacking in presence that people forget he is there. He plays as a pure passer, using misdirection to redirect the ball where nobody is looking. He quit Teiko's team because its stars cared only about winning, and at Seirin he sets out to beat them as the 'shadow' to Kagami's 'light'. Over the series he learns to beat defenders on the dribble and to shoot, both things he once could not do.

Taiga Kagami

Main Cast

Seirin's first-year power forward, who grew up playing basketball in the United States and came back to Japan during middle school. He is a natural talent with an enormous jump, a short temper and a fear of dogs, and he means to beat every one of the Generation of Miracles. Tatsuya Himuro, his 'brother' from America, got him into the game, and the former WNBA player Alex Garcia trained them both. Before the Winter Cup he flies back to America to train, and against Aomine the two aces end up fighting it out in the Zone.

Riko Aida

Supporting

Seirin's coach, a second-year student and the daughter of the sports trainer Kagetora Aida. Growing up around her father's gym taught her to read a player's physical abilities just by looking at them. She is strict, fiercely devoted to her team and a famously bad cook. She agreed to coach only after the club showed it was serious about reaching the top.

Junpei Hyuga

Supporting

Seirin's captain and shooting guard, a second-year who gets sharper, ruder and more accurate when a game is on the line, a state his teammates call clutch time. After a losing middle-school career he had nearly given up basketball before Kiyoshi talked him into the new club. He is Seirin's best shooter, and his signature move is the Barrier Jumper, a quick step away from his defender into a jump shot.

Teppei Kiyoshi

Supporting

Seirin's second-year center and the founder of its basketball club, known as the 'Iron Heart', one of the Uncrowned Kings. A knee injury suffered against Kirisaki Daiichi the year before kept him in hospital through the Inter-High, and he comes back knowing that this will be his last year playing for Seirin. He is calm and kind, and he believes a team is made by people supporting each other. After the Winter Cup he goes abroad for surgery on his knee.

Ryota Kise

Main Cast

Kaijo High's first-year small forward and the last to join the Generation of Miracles. He only took up basketball in his second year at Teiko, after watching Aomine play. He can copy any move after seeing it once, and he works as a model on the side. Kuroko was his first instructor at Teiko, and Seirin's win over Kaijo in a practice match is the first game Kise has ever lost. He later develops Perfect Copy, which lets him reproduce the other Miracles' skills for a few minutes at a time.

Shintaro Midorima

Main Cast

Shutoku High's first-year shooting guard and Teiko's former vice-captain, whose high-arcing three-pointers go in from anywhere on the court. He follows the Oha-Asa horoscope religiously, always carries the day's lucky item, often ends his sentences with 'nanodayo', and, unlike some of the other Miracles, never stops practising hard. He sounds harsh but is caring underneath. His teammate Kazunari Takao, whose Hawk Eye sees the whole court, pulls him around town in a cart hitched to his bicycle.

Daiki Aomine

Main Cast

Touou Academy's first-year power forward and the ace of the Generation of Miracles, who was Kuroko's 'light' at Teiko. His talent grew so far beyond everyone else's that he lost interest, stopped going to practice and lived by the line 'the only one who can beat me is me'. He crushes Seirin in the Inter-High preliminaries, but their Winter Cup rematch hands him his first-ever loss. Afterwards he wants to practise again, and asks his childhood friend Momoi to go shopping for new basketball shoes.

Satsuki Momoi

Supporting

Teiko's former manager, now manager at Touou Academy, where she keeps an eye on her childhood friend Aomine, whom she calls 'Dai-chan'. Her real weapon is information: she analyses opponents so closely that she can predict their moves. The only player she cannot read is Kuroko, whom she has adored ever since he handed her a winning ice-lolly stick.

Atsushi Murasakibara

Main Cast

The Generation of Miracles' former center, now at Yosen High in Akita, and at 208 cm the tallest of them. He is lazy, childish and almost always eating snacks, says he only plays because he happens to be good at it, and openly scorns players who try hard without his gifts. In the Winter Cup his Yosen side opens up an 18–0 lead on Seirin, but losing that game leaves him with a new respect for basketball. In middle school he is said to have scored over 100 points in a single game.

Seijuro Akashi

Antagonist

The captain of the Generation of Miracles, now captain of Rakuzan High as a first-year. Heir to a powerful family and raised by a demanding father, he believes winning is everything and has never lost a game. At Teiko, when Murasakibara came close to beating him one-on-one, a colder, more ruthless second personality took over. His Emperor Eye reads an opponent's smallest movements, so he can steal the ball or send a defender to the floor.

Makoto Hanamiya

Antagonist

The coach and captain of Kirisaki Daiichi High and one of the Uncrowned Kings, nicknamed the 'Bad Boy' for his dirty play. He is highly intelligent, and he studies an opponent's passing patterns so that his team can close the lanes and leave him to steal the ball, a trap called the Spider's Web. He was behind the injury that kept Kiyoshi out for a year, and he plays to watch hard-working players suffer. Seirin beat his team in the Winter Cup qualifiers.

Kuroko's Basketball Character FAQs

Who are the Generation of Miracles?

The five prodigies of Teiko Middle School's basketball team, which won three national championships in a row: Ryota Kise, Shintaro Midorima, Daiki Aomine, Atsushi Murasakibara and their captain, Seijuro Akashi. After middle school they went to five different high schools — Kaijo, Shutoku, Touou Academy, Yosen and Rakuzan. Viz's English edition of the manga calls them 'the Miracle Generation'.

Why is Kuroko called the phantom sixth man?

Because he was the Generation of Miracles' sixth member, though few people knew it. He has so little presence that opponents lose track of him, and he used that at Teiko as a sixth man coming off the bench, passing the ball through gaps no one saw. Akashi was the one who spotted his talent and helped him perfect his passing.

Who are the Uncrowned Kings?

Five gifted players who would have been called prodigies if the Generation of Miracles had not been their age. Teppei Kiyoshi plays for Seirin and Makoto Hanamiya captains Kirisaki Daiichi. The other three, Reo Mibuchi, Kotaro Hayama and Eikichi Nebuya, all play for Rakuzan alongside Akashi.

What is the Zone in Kuroko's Basketball?

A state of total concentration in which a player reaches his full potential. Aomine is the first to enter it at will, and he and Kagami end up battling each other in it at the Winter Cup. It drains stamina quickly. In the final, Kagami goes further and opens what the series calls the Zone's second door, a state built on teamwork, with Kuroko as its gatekeeper.

What do KNB and Kuroko no Basket mean?

Both are fan names for the series. Its Japanese title is Kuroko no Basuke, 'Kuroko's Basketball', which fans also write as Kuroko no Basket and shorten to KNB. It is the same story under every name: the manga by Tadatoshi Fujimaki and the 75-episode anime by Production I.G.
