Mashle: Magic and Muscles Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles is set in a world where everyone uses magic, a person's mark and magical skill decide their place in society, and anyone born without magic is hunted by the authorities. Mash Burnedead, raised in secret in the forest by his adoptive father, Regro, was born with none, so he enrols at Easton Magic Academy on a fake mark to become a Divine Visionary, the elite title that would keep his family safe. His friends in Adler house are his timid roommate Finn Ames, the gravity mage Lance Crown, the loud, explosive Dot Barrett and Lemon Irvine, who is convinced Mash proposed to her. In season 1 they take on Magia Lupus, the seven coin-stealing students of Lang house led by Abel Walker and Abyss Razor. In season 2 Mash's secret is out, the Divine Visionaries of the Bureau of Magic, among them Finn's brother Rayne, Ryoh Grantz, Kaldo Gehenna and Orter Mádl, decide his fate, and the selection exam pits him against Orca's prefect, Margarette Macaron. Behind it all is Innocent Zero, the leader of a dark-magic organisation whose followers include Cell War; his old fellow pupil, Headmaster Wahlberg Baigan, is his equal in power.

Mash Burnedead

Protagonist

A deadpan, blunt but kind young man born without magic in a world that hunts down people like him. His adoptive father, Regro, raised him in the forest and trained his body instead, and Mash grew superhumanly strong. When a trip to town for cream puffs, his favourite food, exposes him, the police officer Brad offers a deal: enrol at Easton on a fake mark and become a Divine Visionary. He gets through every test with sheer strength, which he calls "Muscle Magic", until his secret comes out at the end of season 1. In season 2 he learns that Innocent Zero is his biological father, and after saving the academy he swears before an angry crowd that he will become a Divine Visionary.

Mash's roommate in Adler house and the straight man of the group, quick to panic and the first to point out that what Mash just did is impossible. Early on a bully forces him to wreck Mash's things; when he refuses, Mash stands up for him, and they become close friends. He is the younger brother of the Divine Visionary Rayne Ames. In the selection exam he refuses to give up his team's last crystal, even against Carpaccio, because Mash's life depends on it, and after the exam he talks Mash into studying so the two can graduate together.

His younger sister, Anna, has a disease that is eating away her magic, and he has vowed to become a Divine Visionary so that the law cannot take her. He first challenges Mash for his coins, then becomes a friend, helping him with Potions and beating Magia Lupus's Wirth. He adores his sister to a fault, is terrified of bugs and ghosts, and in season 2 is still determined to reach the title before Mash does.

From then on she calls herself his fiancée, makes him a cream-puff good-luck charm and is turned into one of Abel's dolls until Mash's victory over Abel frees her. Mashle: Magic and Muscles Character FAQs

Who are the main characters in Mashle?

Mash Burnedead, a boy born without magic who wins everything with his muscles, and his four friends in Easton's Adler house: his roommate Finn Ames, the gravity mage and true rival Lance Crown, the hot-headed self-proclaimed rival Dot Barrett and Lemon Irvine, who believes Mash proposed to her. Around them are Headmaster Wahlberg, Finn's brother Rayne, the Divine Visionaries and the villain Innocent Zero.

Can Mash Burnedead use magic?

No. Mash was born without a mark, so he cannot cast a single spell. Everything he does, from flying in a Duelo match to beating Magia Lupus, comes from physical strength his father trained into him, a style he calls "Muscle Magic". He gets into Easton with a fake mark from the police officer Brad, and the whole school learns the truth at the end of season 1, when he smashes Cell War's spell-reflecting mirror.

Who are the Divine Visionaries in Mashle?

The elite mages at the core of the Bureau of Magic, each known by a Cane title. In the anime they are Ryoh Grantz (Light Cane), Orter Mádl (Desert Cane), Kaldo Gehenna (Flame Cane), Renatus Revol (Immortal Cane), Tsurara Halestone (Ice Cane), Agito Tyrone (Dragon Cane), Sophina Biblia (Knowledge Cane) and the newest, Finn's brother Rayne Ames (Sword Cane). Headmaster Wahlberg is a former Divine Visionary. They gather in season 2 to decide whether Mash may live.

Who is Mash's real father?

Innocent Zero, the leader of the dark-magic organisation of the same name. He arrives at the selection exam in season 2 to claim Mash, and his follower Cell War reveals that Mash is the youngest of his six sons, who went missing as a baby. Mash was found abandoned by Regro Burnedead, who raised him as his own son in the forest; Regro is the father Mash fights to protect.

What is Magia Lupus in Mashle?

A secret group of seven Lang house students who steal coins from the other houses, led by Abel Walker. Its members are ranked as Fangs: Abel (First), Abyss Razor (Second), Wirth Mádl (Third), Milo Genius (Fourth), Love Cute (Fifth), Olore Andrew (Sixth) and Anser Shinri (Seventh). Mash, Lance, Dot and Finn take them on in season 1, and after Mash beats Abel the group becomes friendly with them.
