Ouran High School Host Club Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Ouran High School Host Club is set at Ouran Academy, an elite private school in Tokyo for the children of the very rich, where the Host Club, six handsome boys with too much time and money on their hands, entertains the school's girls after class in Music Room 3. Into it walks Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student from an ordinary home, who breaks an antique vase worth ¥8 million and has to work off the debt as a host; the club takes her for a boy at first, and once they learn she is a girl they keep it secret. The cast falls into three circles. At the centre are the seven hosts: the president Tamaki, the vice-president Kyoya, the twins Hikaru and Kaoru, Honey and his cousin Mori, and Haruhi herself. Around them are the people of Ouran, from the self-appointed manager Renge to Nekozawa of the Black Magic Club, along with rivals such as the Zuka Club of St. Lobelia Girls' Academy. Behind them stand the families, which shape most of the hosts' stories: Haruhi's father Ryoji, Kyoya's demanding father, and the grandmother who keeps Tamaki from his mother. This guide covers the 26-episode anime, not the manga's later chapters or the live-action versions.

Ouran High School Host Club Character FAQs

Who is the main character of Ouran High School Host Club?

Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at the elite Ouran Academy. She breaks a vase worth ¥8 million in the Host Club's room and has to work off the debt as a host. Practical and blunt, she keeps her feet on the ground while the rich boys around her get carried away, and most episodes follow her through one of the club's adventures.

Who are the members of the Host Club?

There are seven. Tamaki Suoh, the president, is the princely type; Kyoya Otori, the vice-president who runs the finances, is the cool type; the twins Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin are the little-devil types; Mitsukuni 'Honey' Haninozuka charms the guests by being adorable; his cousin Takashi 'Mori' Morinozuka is the wild type, called the strong, silent type in the English dub; and Haruhi Fujioka is the natural type.

Is Haruhi a boy or a girl?

A girl. When she first walks into the Host Club, her short hair and baggy clothes lead the hosts to take her for a boy, and because she has to work off her debt as a host, she goes on wearing the boys' uniform at school; she could not afford the girls' uniform anyway. The hosts learn the truth in the first episode and keep it secret. Haruhi herself does not think it matters much either way.

Why is Kyoya called the Shadow King?

Because he is the one who really runs the Host Club. Tamaki is the 'King' who keeps the guests happy, but Kyoya keeps the accounts, sells photo albums and other merchandise, plans the events and plants ideas in Tamaki's head so that Tamaki thinks they are his own. Haruhi works this out in the second episode.

What is the 'Which one is Hikaru?' game?

A guessing game the Hitachiin twins play with almost everyone: they ask people to say which of them is Hikaru, and almost nobody gets it right. It goes back to their childhood, when a maid they trusted could not tell them apart, and it left them trusting no one but each other. Tamaki eventually wins it once, which is how the twins came to join the club, but Haruhi can tell them apart every time, and that is why they come to trust her.
