About Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club (Ōran Kōkō Hosuto Kurabu) is a romantic comedy manga written and drawn by Bisco Hatori. It ran in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine from September 2002 to November 2010 and fills 18 volumes, published in English by Viz Media under its Shojo Beat label. The idea came from Hatori's editor while she was still working on her first series, Millennium Snow: a story modelled on Japanese host clubs, set among handsome boys at a very rich high school, which Hatori used to poke fun at the habits of shōjo manga. Bones adapted the first eight volumes as a 26-episode anime, directed by Takuya Igarashi, with series composition and scripts by Yōji Enokido, character designs by Kumiko Takahashi and music by Yoshihisa Hirano. It aired on Nippon TV from April to September 2006, with Maaya Sakamoto as Haruhi and Mamoru Miyano as Tamaki, and Funimation's English dub followed in 2008, directed by Caitlin Glass, who also voices Haruhi. By January 2026 the manga had more than 14 million copies in circulation.

Ouran Academy is an elite private school in Bunkyo, Tokyo, for the children of the very rich, and Haruhi Fujioka is one of its rare scholarship students. Looking for a quiet place to study, she opens the door of the disused Music Room 3 and finds the Host Club: six boys who entertain the school's girls after class with tea, flattery and lavish costume parties. Startled by the club's president, Tamaki Suoh, she knocks over an antique vase worth ¥8 million. With her short hair and baggy clothes the hosts take her for a boy, so they set her to work as their errand boy and then, when she turns out to be a natural with the guests, as a host. They soon learn that she is a girl and agree to keep it to themselves, and her debt will be forgiven once enough guests have asked for her: 100 at first, then 1,000. Her fellow hosts are Tamaki, the vice-president Kyoya Otori, the twins Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin, the small, cake-loving Honey and his tall, silent cousin Mori.

Much of the comedy comes from the gap between Haruhi, who is practical, blunt and unimpressed by money, and the boys, who have never had to count it and treat her ordinary life (instant coffee, supermarket sales, a small flat) as an exotic adventure. Hatori meant the series as a parody of the genre's clichés, and the anime leans into it: the hosts announce what kind of show they are in, Renge, their self-appointed manager, rises out of the floor to explain each new trope, and the club has a new theme and new costumes almost every day. Reviewers singled out Haruhi herself, whom Anime News Network's Rose Bridges called one of the freshest parts of the series and IGN praised as a heroine who is written as smart and acts it. As the episodes go on, the jokes give way to the hosts' own stories, from twins who trusted only each other to a youngest son trying to win his father's respect and a president kept away from his mother, and Hatori has described Ouran as a story about family and friendship. The anime ends with a finale of its own; the manga carries on for ten more volumes and ends differently.

What the Ouran High School Host Club Quiz Tests

Our Ouran High School Host Club quiz covers the 26 episodes of the Bones anime. It does not ask about anything found only in the manga, or about the live-action drama, the film or the stage musicals. Easy levels cover the basics: who made the series, Ouran Academy and Music Room 3, the broken vase and Haruhi's scholarship, the hosts and the 'types' they play, Usa-chan, Haruhi's ambitions and the one thing that frightens her. The middle levels follow the story in order, from Princess Ayanokoji and Renge's arrival through the twins' fight, Shiro's piano duet, the Zuka Club of St. Lobelia, the visit to Haruhi's home, Nekozawa and his little sister, Honey's cavity, Haruhi in Wonderland, the summer in Karuizawa, Honey's brother Chika and Ritsu Kasanoda. The hard levels are for people who watched closely: Renge's catchphrase, what Haruhi's father calls Tamaki, the name the club gives Kasanoda, Honey's nightly dessert, Tamaki's dog, the opening theme's singer, how Kyoya and Tamaki first met, and the Ouran Fair that ends the series.

Key Characters

Haruhi Fujioka is the calm centre of the show: a first-year who believes what a person is like matters far more than money or looks, says exactly what she thinks, studies hard so that she can become a lawyer like her late mother, and is almost entirely unaware of the effect she has on the people around her. Tamaki Suoh, the club's president, is her opposite, a flamboyant, theatrical half-French second-year who plays the prince for his guests, sulks in a corner when he is teased, and treats the club as the family he never had, with himself as Haruhi's father. His best friend Kyoya Otori, the vice-president, is the 'Shadow King' who keeps the accounts, sells photo albums of the hosts and quietly steers Tamaki's ideas; as the youngest son of a powerful family that runs hospitals, he is more caring than he lets anyone see. Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin are mischievous twins in Haruhi's class who trusted no one but each other until she proved she could tell them apart, Kaoru being the calmer of the two. Mitsukuni 'Honey' Haninozuka is a third-year who looks like a small child, carries his stuffed rabbit Usa-chan everywhere and lives on cake, but comes from a family of martial artists and is frighteningly good at it, while his cousin Takashi 'Mori' Morinozuka, a tall, quiet kendo champion, watches over him. Around them are Renge Houshakuji, the self-appointed manager who arrives from France; Umehito Nekozawa of the Black Magic Club; Haruhi's devoted father, Ryoji; the Zuka Club of St. Lobelia Girls' Academy; and, at the end, the French heiress Éclair Tonnerre and Tamaki's stern grandmother.

Ouran High School Host Club Fun Facts

  • Kyoya nearly did not make it into the story. Bisco Hatori has said that if she had been given 40 pages for the first chapter instead of 50, he would have been cut, and she is glad he was not, because with the rest of the club the way they are, he is the one who keeps order and explains things. She built his name from his glasses, taking the last syllable of gankyō, a Japanese word for a pair of spectacles.
  • Éclair Tonnerre, the heiress who appears only in the anime's final episodes, has a name that means 'lightning thunder' in French. It is a nod to Haruhi's terror of thunder, and to her fear of losing Tamaki.
  • When the anime was cast, the voices from the 2003–05 drama CDs were all replaced except one: Kenichi Suzumura. He had played Kaoru on the CDs and moved over to Hikaru for the anime.
  • At the end of episode 6, the grade-schooler Shiro strikes a pose borrowed from his voice actor's most famous role: Junko Takeuchi is the Japanese voice of Naruto.
  • Maaya Sakamoto, who voices Haruhi, had felt unsuited to anime voice work before she was cast. She later called the role a major turning point in her career, one that let her truly enjoy voice acting.
  • In the manga, the summer beach trip that the anime sets at the Otori family's resort takes the club to a private beach and mansion belonging to Nekozawa instead.

Ouran High School Host Club Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions

How many episodes of Ouran High School Host Club are there?

Twenty-six, in a single season. The Bones anime aired weekly on Nippon TV from April 2006 until 26 September 2006. It adapts the first eight of the manga's 18 volumes and then finishes with an ending of its own, set at the school's Ouran Fair.

Is Ouran High School Host Club finished?

Yes. The anime ended in September 2006 and no second season was made; at Anime Expo 2019 Bisco Hatori said she would welcome another project with the characters, but that making an anime was not up to her. The manga is complete too: it ended in the November 2010 issue of LaLa, and the 18th and last volume came out in April 2011. It takes the story far beyond the anime and ends differently, so it is worth reading even if you have seen every episode.

What order should I watch Ouran High School Host Club in?

Just watch the 26 episodes in order; the anime has no sequels or films of its own. The 2011 live-action TV drama on TBS (11 episodes) is a separate adaptation with a new cast, led by Haruna Kawaguchi as Haruhi and Yusuke Yamamoto as Tamaki, and the 2012 live-action film carries on from the drama, not from the anime. A short mobile spin-off of the drama, four episodes of about five minutes each, appeared in January 2012.

Where can I watch Ouran High School Host Club?

Crunchyroll holds the licence in North America, the United Kingdom and Australia, through the businesses formerly known as Funimation, Manga Entertainment and Madman Anime, and the series moved to Crunchyroll's streaming service in 2022. Netflix also began streaming it in 190 countries in September 2022, and Muse Communication has released it in Southeast Asia on its Muse Asia YouTube channel. What is Ouran High School Host Club about?

Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at a school for the very rich, stumbles into the Host Club, six wealthy boys who entertain the school's girls, and breaks a vase worth ¥8 million. The club takes her for a boy and has her work off the debt as a host; they soon learn she is a girl and keep her secret.
