The Quintessential Quintuplets Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

The Quintessential Quintuplets centres on Futaro Uesugi, a brilliant but penniless high-school student, and the five girls he is hired to tutor: the Nakano quintuplets, identical sisters who share a face but almost nothing else. Ichika is the teasing eldest with a secret acting career, Nino the fiercely protective cook, Miku the quiet history fan, Yotsuba the cheerful athlete who cannot say no, and Itsuki the serious, hungry youngest who clashes with Futaro from their first meeting. Around them are Futaro's little sister Raiha and their easy-going father Isanari, the sisters' reserved stepfather Maruo and the memory of their late mother Rena, and classmates such as Futaro's would-be rival Yusuke Takeda. From the first episode the story is told as Futaro's memories on his wedding day, when he marries one of the five. This guide covers the two TV seasons and the 2022 film that ends the story.

Futaro Uesugi

Protagonist

A second-year at the top of his year who lives with his father and little sister in a small apartment. His mother has died, his father is in debt, and he has no friends and no interest in anything but study. He takes a well-paid job tutoring the Nakano quintuplets, hired to see all five through to graduation. In his student handbook he keeps a photo of a girl he met on a school trip to Kyoto as a sixth-grader, who inspired him to study. Blunt and tactless at first, he slowly comes to care about all five, and the whole series is framed as his memories on the day he marries one of them.

Ichika Nakano

Main Cast

The eldest of the quintuplets, with short hair and a single earring. She plays the responsible big sister and loves to tease, but at home she sleeps a lot and her room is a mess. She is secretly working as an actress, which comes out at the fireworks festival, and she later takes on more roles to keep money coming in when the sisters move out on their own. Her feelings for Futaro lead her to pose as Miku on the third-year trip to Kyoto, which she comes to regret and apologises for.

Nino Nakano

Main Cast

The second sister, who wears her long hair with two butterfly ribbons until she cuts it short in season 2. She cares about her sisters more than anything and at first sees Futaro as an intruder, doing all she can to keep him out of their apartment. A skilled cook who runs the family kitchen, she falls for Kintaro, the blond boy Futaro poses as at the school camp. She becomes the first of the sisters to tell Futaro plainly that she loves him, and wins a job at the bakery where he works.

Miku Nakano

Main Cast

The third sister: quiet, calm and seldom seen without the headphones around her neck. She secretly loves the warlords of Japan's Sengoku period, does best of the five in Futaro's first test, and is so good at disguises that her sisters ask her to stand in for them. She is the first to warm to Futaro after Yotsuba, but doubts she can compete with her sisters. She practises cooking, which she is bad at, for his sake, and discovers that she loves baking for its own sake.

Yotsuba Nakano

Main Cast

The fourth sister, known for the ribbon she ties like a pair of rabbit ears. Cheerful, friendly and the most athletic of the five, she can never refuse a request, so the sports clubs keep borrowing her even before exams. She is the only sister who accepts Futaro as their tutor from the start, and he leans on her to reach the others, though she is the weakest student of the five; the sisters left their old school together after she failed its exams. In the third year she volunteers herself and Futaro as class representatives.

Itsuki Nakano

Main Cast

The youngest sister, with long hair, a stray tuft on top and star-shaped hairpins. She is the first of the five Futaro meets, at lunch in the school cafeteria, and after he is rude to her she stays prickly with him for a long time. Serious, polite and the hardest worker of the five, she is also the biggest eater. She was always close to their late mother, a teacher, decides to become a teacher herself and starts interning at a cram school in her third year.

Raiha Uesugi

Supporting

Futaro's cheerful little sister, still at primary school, who does the cooking and is effectively the head of the household. Her cute expressions are a running gag: they talk Futaro, Yotsuba and Itsuki into almost anything. When Itsuki ends up eating dinner with the Uesugis on the very first night, Raiha invites her back. Before the school camp she gives Futaro a lucky charm, and in the flash-forward to his wedding years later she finds that he still wears it.

Isanari Uesugi

Supporting

Futaro and Raiha's father, a rather immature man with golden hair and sunglasses pushed up on his forehead, who tells his son not to study so hard. The family is poor and he is in debt, and it is he who lands Futaro the tutoring job with the Nakanos. He comes along when Futaro wins a trip to a hot-spring inn, where they run into the quintuplets.

Maruo Nakano

Supporting

The quintuplets' stepfather, a busy, reserved doctor who hires Futaro as their tutor. He lives apart from the girls and at first speaks to Futaro only by phone, warning him that he will be fired if even one of his daughters fails. Futaro later calls him out for neglecting them, and in season 2 a deal over the finals decides whether Futaro can come back as their tutor. He takes the sisters on a family trip to the hot-spring inn run by their grandfather.

Rena Nakano

Supporting

The quintuplets' late mother, a strict, stern teacher whom her pupils nonetheless adored. She raised the five on her own, in poverty, until she married Maruo, and taught them that sisters share everything equally; the fireworks they watch together every year are a memory of her. Her former pupil Shimoda became a teacher because of her, and Itsuki hopes to follow the same path. The girl from Futaro's photo who reappears in season 2 goes by her name.

Yusuke Takeda

Supporting

A handsome, popular classmate in the third year and the son of the school principal. He spent years ranked second in their year behind Futaro, who had never even noticed him, and sees Futaro as his rival. When the sisters' father wants Takeda to take over as their tutor, Futaro takes him on in the national mock exam while still tutoring the five, and beats him, earning his respect.

Maeda

Supporting

A classmate with brown hair and a fierce, delinquent look. Before the school camp he asks Ichika to the campfire dance, not knowing that Miku is standing in for her, and Futaro sends him off by pretending to be Ichika's boyfriend. Maeda's answer is to dare Ichika to dance with Futaro at the campfire. In the third year he is in Class 3-1 with Futaro and the five sisters.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Character FAQs

Who is the main character of The Quintessential Quintuplets?

Futaro Uesugi, a top student from a poor family who takes a well-paid job as a private tutor to the five Nakano sisters. The story is told as his memories: the first episode opens on his wedding day, and the series then goes back to the day he met the quintuplets. The five sisters, Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba and Itsuki, share the lead with him.

What are the names of the Nakano quintuplets, from oldest to youngest?

Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba and Itsuki. Each name hides a number that matches the birth order: ichi (one) in Ichika, ni (two) in Nino, mi (three) in Miku, yotsu (four) in Yotsuba and itsu (five) in Itsuki. The creator, Negi Haruba, added the numbers late in designing them, after giving each sister a colour: yellow for Ichika, purple for Nino, blue for Miku, green for Yotsuba and red for Itsuki.

How do you tell the Nakano quintuplets apart?

By their hair and accessories. Ichika has short hair and a single earring; Nino wears two butterfly ribbons (and cuts her long hair short in season 2); Miku has headphones round her neck; Yotsuba has a ribbon tied like rabbit ears; and Itsuki has star-shaped hairpins. They are identical quintuplets, and they often dress as one another to fool Futaro, so he spends much of the series learning to recognise them by the way they talk and act. Their grandfather's advice is that there is no trick, only love.

Who does Futaro marry in The Quintessential Quintuplets?

One of the five sisters: the series shows his wedding from the first episode but keeps the bride's face hidden. The anime reveals who she is in The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie (2022), which follows season 2 and adapts the manga's last four volumes. This page does not name her, so it is safe to read before the film; the hard levels of our quiz do ask about it.

Who voices the quintuplets?

In Japanese, Kana Hanazawa voices Ichika, Ayana Taketatsu voices Nino, Miku Itō voices Miku, Ayane Sakura voices Yotsuba and Inori Minase voices Itsuki; together they also sing the theme songs as the Nakano Family's Quintuplets. In the English dub the sisters are Lindsay Seidel, Jill Harris, Felecia Angelle, Bryn Apprill and Tia Ballard. Futaro is voiced in Japanese by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka.
