The Quintessential Quintuplets Quiz

Broke but brilliant student Futaro Uesugi is hired to tutor the Nakano quintuplets, five identical sisters who hate studying, and a flash-forward shows he will one day marry one of them.

About The Quintessential Quintuplets

The Quintessential Quintuplets (Go-Tōbun no Hanayome, which Wikipedia renders literally as 'Five Equal Brides' or 'The Five-Fifths Bride(s)') is a romantic comedy manga written and drawn by Negi Haruba. It ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from August 2017 to February 2020, 122 chapters collected in 14 volumes, and Kodansha USA publishes it in English. It won the shōnen award at the 43rd Kodansha Manga Awards in 2019, shared with To Your Eternity, and had more than 20 million copies in circulation by December 2022.

The anime began on TBS in January 2019 with a 12-episode first season from Tezuka Productions, directed by Satoshi Kuwabara, with series composition by Keiichirō Ōchi, who stayed on for season 2 and wrote the film's screenplay. Bibury Animation Studios took over for the 12-episode second season, The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬, directed by Kaori; it was meant to start in October 2020 but was pushed back to January 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic. The story ends in The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie, directed by Masato Jinbo and released in Japan on 20 May 2022, which adapts the manga's final four volumes. Two two-part TV specials followed: The Quintessential Quintuplets∽ (2023), made by Shaft from manga chapters the anime had skipped, and The Quintessential Quintuplets* (2024), an original honeymoon story drafted by Haruba. In May 2026 a TV anime of the sequel novels, The Quintessential Quintuplets: The Four Seasons, and a new OVA were announced.

Futaro Uesugi is a second-year high-school student at the top of his year, but his family is poor, his father is in debt, his mother has died and he has no friends. When the wealthy Nakano family moves to his school, he is hired as a well-paid private tutor, and discovers that his pupils are identical quintuplets: Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba and Itsuki, five transfer students with very different personalities, terrible grades and no wish to study. His job is to see all five through to graduation, and most of the sisters want nothing to do with him at first. From the opening scene the story is told as a flashback from Futaro's wedding day, when he marries one of the five, and the identity of the bride is kept hidden until the very end. Reviewers liked its jokes and found that the sisters grow beyond their first stereotypes.

What the The Quintessential Quintuplets Quiz Tests

Our Quintessential Quintuplets quiz covers the 24 episodes of the two TV seasons and the 2022 film that concludes the story. It uses nothing from the 2023 and 2024 TV specials, the sequel novels or chapters that only appear in the manga. Easy levels cover the basics: who made the series, Futaro's job and why he needs it, the five sisters and how to tell them apart, and the cast. The middle levels follow the story in order, from the first test and the fireworks festival through the midterms and the school camp to season 2's Seven Goodbyes, the hot-spring trip, Class 3-1 and the school trip to Kyoto, plus who directed the film. The hard levels are for people who have seen it all and are the only place the big reveals appear: the girl in Futaro's old photo, the identity of the bride, the film's festival and its epilogue, and a few details only close watchers will catch.

Key Characters

Futaro Uesugi begins the series as a blunt, friendless top student who cares about nothing but study and money for his family, and he takes the tutoring job only for the pay. The five sisters he is hired to teach look identical but could hardly be more different. Ichika, the eldest, plays the relaxed big sister and teases him, while hiding an acting career from the others. Nino, fiercely protective of her sisters and a fine cook, does everything she can to drive him away at first. Miku is quiet, unsure of herself and secretly devoted to the warlords of the Sengoku period. Yotsuba, cheerful and sporty, is the only one who welcomes him from the start and can never turn down a request. Itsuki, serious and always hungry, gets off to the worst start of all after their argument in the cafeteria; Ichika reckons the two of them clash because they are so alike. Around them are Futaro's little sister Raiha, who runs the Uesugi household, their easy-going father Isanari, and the sisters' reserved stepfather Maruo, who hires Futaro and keeps setting conditions. As the tutoring goes on, each sister's relationship with Futaro changes, and the question of which one he will marry hangs over all of them.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Fun Facts

  • Negi Haruba gave each sister her own colour, the way Super Sentai teams are colour-coded: yellow for Ichika, purple for Nino, blue for Miku, green for Yotsuba and red for Itsuki. Only when the designs were nearly finished did he think of hiding numbers in their names.
  • Their hair is drawn in a different shade for each sister so readers can tell them apart. The bride in the flash-forwards is given a shade in between, so her hair colour gives nothing away.
  • Quadruplets and sextuplets were both suggested during the planning, but Haruba turned them down very quickly: it was always going to be five.
  • In an October 2017 TV commercial for the manga, Ayane Sakura voiced all five girls. In the anime she voices only Yotsuba.
  • Episode 11 of the first season was produced at Shaft rather than Tezuka Productions. A TBS producer asked Shaft for help when the main studio was short of time, and Shaft ended up making the whole episode apart from the storyboards, which the series director drew.
  • The film grossed about US$18.4 million worldwide, sold a million tickets in Japan within 26 days, and was the seventh highest-grossing anime film of 2022 in Japan. Moviegoers in Japan were given a Volume 14.5 of the manga with a bonus chapter set after the original ending.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions

How many episodes of The Quintessential Quintuplets are there?

The TV anime has 24 episodes: 12 in season 1 (January to March 2019) and 12 in season 2, The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬ (January to March 2021). On top of that there are two TV specials of two episodes each, The Quintessential Quintuplets∽ (2023) and The Quintessential Quintuplets* (2024).

Is The Quintessential Quintuplets finished?

Yes, the story is complete. The manga ended in February 2020 after 122 chapters, and the anime finished adapting it with the 2022 film, which covers the last four volumes. The 2023 and 2024 specials are extras, one filling in skipped chapters and one an original honeymoon story. More is on the way: in May 2026 the official site announced a TV anime of the sequel light novels, The Quintessential Quintuplets: The Four Seasons, which follow the sisters from January of their final school year to the end of the year after graduation, and a new OVA of manga stories the anime has not yet shown. Neither had a release date in November 2026.

What order should I watch The Quintessential Quintuplets in?

Season 1, then season 2 (The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬), then The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie, which picks up after season 2 and ends the story. After that come the two specials: The Quintessential Quintuplets∽ (2023), whose two episodes adapt summer-holiday chapters set before the film's school festival, and The Quintessential Quintuplets* (2024), a honeymoon trip to Hawaii set after the ending. The ∽ special fits between season 2 and the film in story order, but it was made after the film, and it is easiest to watch in release order.

Where can I watch The Quintessential Quintuplets?

Crunchyroll streamed the first season with an English dub from Funimation and holds the licence for the second season, the film and the two TV specials. What does Gotōbun no Hanayome mean?

Go-Tōbun no Hanayome is the Japanese title, which Wikipedia translates literally as 'Five Equal Brides' or 'The Five-Fifths Bride(s)' (its season pages also give 'Quintuplet Brides'); it is sometimes written 5-Tōbun no Hanayome. The same word, gotōbun, runs through the series: in the title of episode 5, 'Five Fifths', in theme songs such as 'Gotōbun no Kimochi' ('Quintuplet Feelings'), and in the rule the sisters learned from their mother, that the five of them share everything, joy and sorrow alike, in equal parts.
