Re:Zero Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World is set in the Kingdom of Lugunica, a fantasy realm with no king, where five candidates are competing in a royal selection for the throne. Subaru Natsuki, a teenager from Japan, lands in the middle of it with one strange power, Return by Death, which sends him back in time whenever he dies. The cast he gathers is built around the camp of the half-elf candidate Emilia: the twin oni maids Ram and Rem, the library spirit Beatrice, the cat spirit Puck and their eccentric host, Roswaal, later joined by the merchant Otto and the Sanctuary's guardian Garfiel. Against them stands the Witch Cult, whose Sin Archbishops each embody one of the deadly sins, while the Witches of Sin, most of them dead for four centuries, still shape events from the past. Many characters carry secrets about who they were before the story began, and the series often returns to the same people from a new angle after another of Subaru's deaths. This guide covers the anime's four seasons only.
All Re:Zero Characters
Subaru Natsuki
ProtagonistA seventeen-year-old shut-in who is pulled into Lugunica on his way home from a convenience store. He has no fighting talent and almost no usable magic, only Return by Death: when he dies, time rewinds to a set point and only he remembers what happened, and he cannot tell anyone about it. Brash and self-centred at first, he learns through failure after failure to rely on other people. At the end of season 2 Emilia makes him her knight, and Beatrice becomes his contracted spirit.
Emilia
Main CastA silver-haired half-elf and one of the five candidates to become Lugunica's next ruler. Because she looks like Satella, the Witch of Envy, most people fear or shun her, and she has grown up lonely and unsure that she deserves anything good. She is kind, earnest and sometimes naive. Season 2 takes her back to her childhood in the Elior Forest, where her aunt Fortuna raised her, and shows why that forest and its people ended up frozen in ice.
Rem
Main CastThe younger of Roswaal's twin oni maids, blue-haired, hard-working and a better cook than her sister, whom she has long felt she could never match. At first she suspects Subaru because he carries the Witch's scent, and in one loop she is the one who kills him. After he risks his life for her in the forest she falls in love with him, and even after he tells her he loves Emilia she stays his most devoted ally. At the start of season 2 a Sin Archbishop of Gluttony eats her name, leaving her in a deep sleep that only Subaru remembers.
Ram
Main CastRem's older twin: pink-haired, sharp-tongued and rarely respectful, she calls Subaru 'Barusu'. As a child she was a prodigy among the oni, until her horn was cut off when their village was attacked; since then she tires easily, and Roswaal treats her every day. She is devoted to Roswaal and in season 2 tells him she loves him. After Rem is erased, Ram cannot remember her sister, yet she begins to sense that something is missing.
Beatrice
Main CastA spirit who looks like a small girl and guards the library in Roswaal's mansion, moving its door to whichever room she likes. She is rude to Subaru, ends many sentences with 'I suppose' and adores Puck. For four hundred years she has waited, under a contract with Echidna, for 'that person' to come for her. At the end of season 2 she chooses Subaru instead and becomes his contracted spirit.
Puck
SupportingEmilia's companion, a great spirit who usually appears as a small floating cat and calls her his daughter. He fights with ice magic but cannot stay manifested at night. If Emilia dies he turns into a gigantic beast bent on destroying the world. In season 2 he breaks their contract, which had been holding back her memories, and disappears.
Roswaal L. Mathers
SupportingA margrave and the kingdom's leading court magician, who sponsors Emilia in the royal selection and owns the mansion where much of season 1 takes place. He dresses and talks like a clown, and Subaru takes him for one at first. Season 2 shows a far colder side: he follows a book of prophecy and will sacrifice anyone to keep to it. He is centuries older than he looks, having passed from body to body down his own family line in the hope of bringing back his teacher, Echidna.
Otto Suwen
SupportingA luckless travelling merchant whom Subaru first meets on the road in season 1. His divine protection lets him understand and speak with animals, which made people treat him as strange for most of his life. Nervous and quick to complain, he still risks everything for Subaru in season 2, calling him a friend, and holds off Garfiel with traps laid with animals' help. He then joins Emilia's camp.
Garfiel Tinzel
SupportingThe guardian of the Sanctuary, a young demi-human who can turn into a tiger and talks far bigger than his years. He fights to keep the Sanctuary closed because he believes his mother abandoned him and his half-sister Frederica. After a trial shows him the truth, he makes peace with Subaru and joins Emilia's camp. In season 3 he meets his mother again in Priestella, alive but with no memory of him.
Reinhard van Astrea
SupportingThe Sword Saint, a knight of the royal guard whom the author has called the strongest character in the series. He saves Subaru in an alley in the first episodes and becomes Felt's knight in the royal selection. He is Wilhelm's grandson, and the family has been split since his grandmother Theresia died fighting the White Whale, when her divine protection as Sword Saint passed to him.
Echidna
AntagonistThe Witch of Greed, dead for four hundred years, whose soul lives on in a dream world tied to the Sanctuary, where she invites Subaru to tea. Her thirst for knowledge has no limit, and she wants Return by Death to study. She offers Subaru a contract, and he turns her down once he sees what she wants. She is the one who set Beatrice to wait in the library, and Roswaal has spent centuries trying to bring her back.
Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti
AntagonistThe Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Sloth and the main villain of season 1's second half. Fanatically devoted to Satella, he leads his followers against Emilia and the village near Roswaal's mansion. He fights with the Unseen Hands and survives by moving his spirit into the bodies of his ten 'Fingers'. Season 2 shows that a century earlier he was a gentle friend of Emilia's aunt, Fortuna.
Re:Zero Character FAQs
Who is the main character of Re:Zero?
Subaru Natsuki, a teenage shut-in from Japan who is pulled into the Kingdom of Lugunica on his way home from a convenience store. He has no special strength or magic, only Return by Death, and the story follows him as he uses it to protect Emilia and his friends.
What is Return by Death?
Subaru's power. Whenever he dies, time rewinds to a set point and he wakes up with his memories of everything that happened, while nobody else remembers. He cannot choose that point, and he cannot tell anyone about the power: when he tries, a shadowy force stops him or punishes those around him. It is tied to Satella, the Witch of Envy.
Does Subaru love Emilia or Rem?
Emilia. Rem confesses her own feelings in season 1, and although Subaru tells her it is Emilia he loves, she stays at his side. In season 2 he tells Emilia he loves her flaws and all, they kiss, and at the end of the season she makes him her knight.
What happened to Rem?
At the start of season 2, Lye Batenkaitos, a Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, ate her name and memories. She fell into a deep sleep, and everyone except Subaru forgot she had ever existed, even her twin, Ram. Subaru keeps her with him through seasons 2 to 4. Spoiler for the end of season 4: she finally wakes, but without her memories.
Who are the Sin Archbishops?
The leaders of the Witch Cult, each standing for one of the deadly sins and each wielding a matching power called an Authority. The anime has so far shown Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti (Sloth), Regulus Corneas (Greed), Sirius (Wrath), Capella Emerada Lugunica (Lust) and three Archbishops of Gluttony: Lye Batenkaitos, Roy Alphard and their sister. As Subaru works out in season 3, all of them are named after stars.
