That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (TenSura) starts with one man dying in Tokyo and waking up in a cave in another world as a slime, and it grows into a story about a whole country. Most of the cast are monsters whom Rimuru has named, and in this world a name is a gift of power: the goblins, direwolves, ogres, lizardmen and orcs he names evolve into stronger forms and become the citizens, officers and friends of his nation, the Jura Tempest Federation. Around them stand the forest's neighbours: the dwarves of Dwargon, the human kingdoms to the west, and the Western Holy Church, which distrusts all monsters. Above everyone are the Demon Lords, a handful of beings so powerful that nations plan around them, and the True Dragons, of whom Rimuru's first friend, Veldora, is one. Several key characters are, like Rimuru, Otherworlders from Japan. This guide covers the main TV series, seasons 1 to 3 and the first two cours of season 4, not the films or spin-offs.

Rimuru Tempest

Protagonist

The reincarnation of Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old Tokyo office worker who was stabbed while protecting a colleague. Reborn as a slime, he can devour almost anything and copy what he devours, and the Great Sage in his mind analyses everything for him. The Storm Dragon Veldora gives him his name, and he goes on to found the Jura Tempest Federation, a nation of monsters that he hopes can live in peace with humans. Easy-going and fond of comfort, he is also a careful planner, and he becomes a Demon Lord in season 2 to bring back the people he lost.

Veldora Tempest

Main Cast

The Storm Dragon, one of the four original True Dragons, sealed in a cave for 300 years by a Hero's Infinite Prison. Bored and lonely, he befriends the newly reincarnated slime, and the two give each other names. Rimuru swallows him to study the seal from the inside and, in season 2, frees him and gives him a human body. Loud, boastful and childish but curious and loyal, Milim's uncle falls in love with the manga Rimuru brings over from his memories, and in season 3 he moves into Tempest's Dungeon as its master and final guardian.

Shizu

Supporting

Shizue Izawa, a Japanese girl summoned into this world as a child during the bombing of Tokyo in the Second World War. The Demon Lord Leon Cromwell, who summoned her, bound the fire spirit Ifrit to her body, and she became a famous adventurer known as the Conqueror of Flames before retiring to teach summoned children. She meets Rimuru near the start of the series and the two bond over memories of Japan. When Ifrit takes control of her, Rimuru separates them, and as her life ends she asks Rimuru to take her into himself, which gives him his human form and her unfinished wish to help her students.

Benimaru

Main Cast

An ogre prince whose village was destroyed by the orc army. Leading the few survivors, he first attacks Rimuru, mistaking him for the masked figure behind the attack, then agrees to serve him until the Orc Lord is defeated and stays on for good. Named by Rimuru, he evolves into a kijin and becomes the general of Tempest's army. Once a hot-head, he grows into a calm, dependable commander who still loves a fight; Shuna is his younger sister, and in season 3 he finds himself engaged to Momiji of the Tengu.

Shuna

Main Cast

Benimaru's younger sister, an ogre princess who survives the destruction of their village and evolves into a kijin when Rimuru names her. Gentle, graceful and kind, she weaves silk and makes clothes for the whole town, and she competes with Shion for the job of looking after Rimuru. She is also a gifted magic user who can wield holy magic, which is very rare for a monster: in season 2 it is her holy magic that wins over the undead Adalmann, and in season 4 she easily defeats the swordsman Gaiye at the Council of the West.

Shion

Main Cast

An ogre warrior who evolves into a kijin and appoints herself Rimuru's secretary and bodyguard. She is enormously strong, fiercely loyal and short on patience, and her cooking is so bad that it gives Gobta food poisoning. She is among those killed when Falmuth attacks Tempest in season 2 and is brought back when Rimuru becomes a Demon Lord, returning far stronger. At Walpurgis she defeats Clayman, and in season 3 she trains the three sons of the Demon Lord Dagruel after beating them.

Supporting

A small hobgoblin from the first goblin village, who rides with the goblin riders and later leads them. He goes with Rimuru to the dwarf kingdom, where he is accidentally left behind and has to summon his wolf to get home. He looks like a fool and often acts like one, but he keeps surprising everyone: he knocks out the lizardman Gabiru in a duel, impresses Hakuro as a talent worth training, and in season 3 is declared the winner of Tempest's martial arts tournament after learning to fuse with Ranga.

Supporting

The son of the direwolf leader who is killed attacking the goblin village. Rather than take revenge, he swears loyalty to Rimuru, and when Rimuru names him the pack evolves into Tempest Wolves, with Ranga later becoming a Tempest Star Wolf. Proud and ferocious towards outsiders, he behaves with Rimuru much like a devoted dog, carries him wherever he needs to go, and keeps up a friendly rivalry with Shion for his master's attention.

Milim Nava

Main Cast

One of the oldest and strongest Demon Lords, known as the Destroyer, and the daughter of a True Dragon, which makes her Veldora's niece. She arrives in Tempest in season 1 to see who defeated the Orc Lord, brushes aside Rimuru's strongest officers, and is won over by a taste of honey; from then on she calls Rimuru her best friend and visits whenever she likes. At Walpurgis she seems to be under Clayman's control, but she was only pretending. Childish and carefree on the surface, she is far sharper than she lets on.

One of the Primordial Demons, known as Noir, the Black. Long ago he fought Shizu under the name Kuro, and he has been watching Rimuru ever since. He is summoned during Rimuru's evolution into a Demon Lord, named Diablo, and becomes his most devoted and most powerful servant. He handles Falmuth after its defeat, helping to put Youm on the throne, and in season 4 he recruits three more Primordials to Rimuru's side, founding the demon army known as the Black Numbers.

An Otherworlder from Japan and one of Shizu's former students, now the leader of the Holy Empire's knights and captain of the Western Holy Church's Crusaders. Believing that Rimuru killed Shizu, she ambushes him in season 2 and leaves thinking she has won. In season 3 a challenge that seems to come from Rimuru brings her to Tempest for a second duel; once she learns that both of them were deceived, she makes peace with him, and by season 4 she is teaching classes in Tempest.

Clayman

Antagonist

A Demon Lord known as the Marionette Master, who prefers to work through others. The orc army that destroyed the ogres' village, the plot to revive Charybdis and Falmuth's attack on Tempest all trace back to him, through go-betweens such as Gelmud and the masked members of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance. At Walpurgis he tries to turn the other Demon Lords against Rimuru, but Rimuru exposes his lies, Shion defeats him, and he is killed by Rimuru, still refusing to name the person he answers to.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Character FAQs

Is Rimuru a boy or a girl?

Neither: Rimuru is genderless. Satoru Mikami was a man, and Rimuru is usually treated as male, but in season 1 he discovers that the human form he takes after absorbing Shizu, which looks like a younger, androgynous Shizu, has no gender. Wikipedia's episode summaries call Rimuru 'he'; the Tensura Wiki uses 'they'.

What happens when Rimuru names a monster?

The monster evolves into a stronger form, and naming costs Rimuru a great deal of magical energy, so much that he passes out for days after naming the goblins and direwolves and again after naming the six ogres. Goblins become hobgoblins, direwolves become Tempest Wolves, ogres become kijin, orcs become high orcs and lizardmen become dragonewts. Stronger monsters cost more to name.

Who is Veldora?

The Storm Dragon, one of the four original True Dragons, who had been sealed in a cave for 300 years when Rimuru, newly reincarnated, found him. They become friends and give each other names, Rimuru and the shared surname Tempest. Rimuru swallows Veldora to study the seal, frees him in season 2 and gives him a human body, and Veldora later becomes the master of Tempest's Dungeon.

Who are the Demon Lords in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?

There were ten, known as the Ten Great Demon Lords, until season 2. After Walpurgis, where Rimuru defeats Clayman and Frey and Carrion step down to serve Milim, eight remain and Rimuru names them the Octagram: Rimuru, Milim Nava, Luminous Valentine, Guy Crimson, Ramiris, Leon Cromwell, Dagruel and Dino.

Does Shion die in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?

She is killed, along with many of Tempest's citizens, when the Kingdom of Falmuth attacks the city in season 2 while Rimuru is away. She does not stay dead: Rimuru becomes a Demon Lord in order to revive them, and Shion and the others come back to life, Shion stronger than before.
