Soul Eater Characters

A scythe meister and bookish overachiever whose mother was a legendary meister and whose father's infidelity destroyed the marriage. She is physically the least imposing of the students and possesses an unusually rare soul, along with the ability to perceive other souls directly. Her defining quality is that she keeps walking toward things that frighten her.

Maka's weapon partner, a scythe from a distinguished family of musicians who abandoned the piano for something he considered cooler. He performs indifference constantly and takes a near-fatal wound protecting Maka within the first few episodes, which establishes the gap between his manner and his actions. The black blood he receives from that injury becomes a long-running liability.

A meister and the last survivor of the Star Clan, a lineage of assassins whose reputation he is determined to eclipse by being as loud as possible. He announces himself before fights he cannot win and then frequently wins them through sheer refusal to lose. His arc is about learning that surpassing a god requires something other than volume.

Black Star's weapon partner and one of the most versatile Demon Weapons in the series, capable of several distinct forms rather than a single one. She is patient to a degree that borders on saintly, which is the only reason the partnership functions at all. Her own arc concerns a brother who took the family's cursed form.

The son of Lord Death, a young reaper whose obsessive-compulsive need for symmetry regularly incapacitates him mid-battle. He is otherwise the most technically capable meister at the academy, wielding twin pistols with precision and holding himself to standards no one imposed on him. The three white stripes in his hair are incomplete on purpose.

Sisters from Brooklyn who were mugging people on the street before Kid recruited them, and who now form his twin pistols. Liz is the anxious, practical older sister; Patty is unnervingly cheerful and the more dangerous of the two. Their transformation from street thugs to reaper's weapons is played as gratitude rather than redemption.

A withdrawn young person raised in isolation by the witch Medusa and fused with a Demon Sword that lives in their blood. Crona repeatedly states an inability to deal with people or situations, and the series treats that as a real injury rather than a quirk. Their shift from antagonist to friend is the emotional core of the middle of the story.

The founder and headmaster of the academy, a personification of death who speaks in a deliberately silly voice and behaves like a friendly cartoon most of the time. He is bound to Death City and cannot leave it, for reasons tied directly to what is buried beneath the school. Beneath the cheerfulness he is genuinely one of the most powerful entities in the setting.

The academy's most gifted meister and its most alarming teacher, a scientist with a bolt through his head and an unmanageable urge to dissect things. He can wield almost any weapon because he adjusts his own wavelength to match theirs. His slow slide toward madness makes him one of the series' most compelling wildcards.

Lord Death's current Death Scythe, Maka's father, and a serial philanderer whose devotion to his daughter is entirely sincere and entirely unwelcome. He was Stein's weapon partner during their student days, which is the source of most of his nervousness around the man. Competent in the field and pathetic outside it.

A witch who infiltrates the academy as its school nurse and manipulates almost every character before her plan surfaces. Her interest in madness is scientific rather than vengeful, which makes her considerably more frightening than a simple villain. Her treatment of Crona, whom she raised as an experiment, is the series' clearest atrocity.

The first Kishin, a being consumed by fear who devoured souls until he became something else entirely, and whom Lord Death sealed beneath the academy long before the series begins. His release is the event the entire plot builds toward, and his power is fear itself rather than any single technique. Death City exists where it does because of what is underneath it.
