Steins;Gate Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Steins;Gate is set in Akihabara in the summer of 2010, and almost all of its cast passes through one cramped room: the Future Gadget Laboratory, which Rintaro Okabe runs from a rented flat above a CRT television shop. Okabe numbers his 'lab members' in the order they join, starting with himself as 001, and the list keeps growing once the lab's phone-controlled microwave turns out to send text messages into the past. Most of the cast are ordinary people carrying one secret or one regret: a maid who misses her father, a journalist who would rather text than talk, a part-timer who is not what she seems, a landlord with a double life. Each experiment with the past pulls someone new into the story, and every change Okabe makes is one that only he can remember. Beyond the lab stand SERN, a research organisation modelled on the real CERN, and its armed agents, the Rounders. This guide covers the 24 episodes of the 2011 TV anime, plus one character from the 2018 sequel, Steins;Gate 0.
All Steins;Gate Characters
Rintaro Okabe
ProtagonistAn 18-year-old first-year student at Tokyo Denki University who calls himself a mad scientist and goes by the alias Hououin Kyouma. He founded the Future Gadget Laboratory and is its Lab Member 001. When the lab's microwave starts sending texts into the past, he finds that he alone keeps his memories when the world line changes, an ability he calls Reading Steiner. The act hides a loyal, kind-hearted friend, and once Mayuri's life is at stake he drops it and goes back in time again and again to save her.
Kurisu Makise
Main CastAn 18-year-old neuroscience researcher at an American university, whose work has already appeared in a leading science journal. Okabe first sees her apparently dead at a talk on time travel, then meets her alive. She joins the lab as Lab Member 004, refusing at first to believe the microwave is a time machine, and goes on to build the Time Leap Machine, which sends a person's memories into the past. Okabe calls her 'assistant' and 'Christina', which she hates. She has not spoken to her father for years: he grew to resent her for outshining him.
Mayuri Shiina
Main CastOkabe's childhood friend and Lab Member 002, a 16-year-old high-school student who greets everyone with 'Tutturu!'. She makes cosplay costumes and works part-time at the maid café MayQueen NyanNyan. Years ago, when she was lost in grief after her grandmother died, Okabe declared her his 'hostage', and his mad-scientist act grew from that moment. From episode 12 she is fated to die again and again, and saving her becomes Okabe's whole mission.
Itaru "Daru" Hashida
Main CastOkabe's friend from high school, a 19-year-old first-year at Tokyo Denki University and Lab Member 003. He is an expert hacker, good with old and new hardware alike, and a dedicated otaku and fan of Faris. Okabe calls him 'Super Hacka', which annoys him. His hacking gets the lab into SERN's network, and he repairs Suzuha's damaged time machine before learning that he is her future father.
Suzuha Amane
Main CastAn 18-year-old who works part-time in Mr. Braun's TV shop below the lab, rides her bicycle everywhere and is searching Akihabara for her father. She is wary of Kurisu from the start. In episode 14 she reveals that she is the time traveller known online as John Titor, from a 2036 ruled by SERN, and that the 'satellite' stuck in the Radio Kaikan building is her time machine. She becomes Lab Member 008, and her father turns out to be Daru.
Moeka Kiryu
SupportingA 20-year-old tech journalist who is hunting for an IBN 5100. She hardly speaks and texts instead, even to someone standing next to her, and she types so fast that Okabe calls her 'Shining Finger'. She becomes Lab Member 005. At the end of episode 12 she is revealed as a Rounder working for SERN and leads the armed raid on the lab. Her orders come by text from someone she knows only as FB.
Ruka Urushibara
SupportingOkabe's friend, Mayuri's classmate and Lab Member 006. Ruka is 16, gentle and shy, and helps out at the family shrine, where an IBN 5100 has been kept; Ruka's father lends it to the lab. Okabe treats Ruka as his pupil, and the two train together with a sword at the shrine.
Faris NyanNyan
SupportingThe most popular maid at MayQueen NyanNyan, where Mayuri also works, and Lab Member 007. Her real name is Rumiho Akiha, she is 17, and her family owns much of Akihabara. She adds 'nyan' to her sentences, happily plays along with Okabe's fantasies and is a keen tournament player of the game Rai-Net Access Battlers. Her D-Mail, sent to stop her father from boarding a plane that was going to crash, changes Akihabara completely.
Yugo Tennouji
SupportingOkabe's landlord, a big, gruff man who runs the CRT television shop under the lab and lives with his young daughter, Nae. Okabe calls him 'Mr. Braun' because of his devotion to CRT ('Braun tube') televisions. He is short-tempered with Okabe but dotes on Nae. In episode 20 he is revealed as FB, the person who has been giving Moeka her orders, forced into SERN's service to keep Nae safe.
Nae Tennouji
SupportingMr. Braun's young daughter, who lives with him at the TV shop. She gets on well with Mayuri and Suzuha and treats them like big sisters, but Okabe and his mad-scientist act frighten her. Keeping her safe is the reason her father does what SERN tells him.
Doctor Nakabachi
AntagonistThe scientist giving the talk on time travel at the Radio Kaikan building on the day the story begins, where Okabe heckles him for borrowing John Titor's ideas. The final episodes reveal that he is Kurisu's estranged father, whose real name is Shouichi Makise. He resents her for surpassing him, attacks her and tries to take her time-travel theory to Russia, an act that in one world line leads towards a third world war.
Maho Hiyajo
SupportingA researcher from Steins;Gate 0, the 2018 sequel. Maho was Kurisu's colleague and friend at the American university's brain science institute, and with Professor Alexis Leskinen she develops Amadeus, an artificial intelligence built from digitised memories. In the sequel's world line, where Kurisu has died, she meets Okabe and recruits him to test the Amadeus version of Kurisu. She first appears in full in Steins;Gate 0.
