Hanako (Amane Yugi)
ProtagonistNo. 7 of Kamome Academy's Seven Wonders and their leader: 'Hanako-san of the Toilet', the ghost said to grant the wish of anyone who knocks three times on the third stall of the old building's third-floor girls' bathroom, in exchange for something precious. To Nene's surprise, he is a boy. Cheerful and fond of teasing, he hides a serious side and takes his duty to keep the peace between humans and supernaturals very seriously. In life he was Amane Yugi, a student at the school decades ago who loved the stars and dreamed of becoming an astronaut. He swallows the second mermaid scale to lift most of Nene's curse, binding the two of them together, and his favourite food is a plain homemade donut.
Nene Yashiro
ProtagonistA first-year at Kamome Academy's high school who loves charms, fortune-telling and occult stories and longs for a boyfriend. Hoping Hanako-san will make her crush, Teru Minamoto, return her feelings, she swallows a mermaid's scale and turns into a fish; Hanako swallows the other scale to share the curse, so now she only changes when she is soaked, and she becomes his assistant, cleaning his bathroom after school and rewriting the rumours that make supernaturals dangerous. Kind, earnest and easily flustered, she is in the Gardening Club, and she can unseal a Wonder's yorishiro, falling asleep to see the memory inside it. The more she learns about Hanako's past, the more she wants to protect him.
Kou Minamoto
Main CastA third-year at the academy's middle school and the second son of the Minamoto family of exorcists, who descend from the legendary exorcist Minamoto no Yorimitsu. Sent by his brother Teru to exorcise the Seven Wonders, he loses his first fight with Hanako and decides to learn what supernaturals are really like before judging them. Brave, honest and quick to rush in, he becomes Hanako and Nene's friend, cooks and keeps house for his family, and wears a traffic-safety charm as an earring. Losing his old classmate Mitsuba hits him hard, and he vows to get stronger.
Mitsuba (Sōsuke Mitsuba)
Main CastA pink-haired ghost who haunts the middle school's shoe lockers, asking students whether they remember him. In life he was Kou's classmate in their first year of middle school and an award-winning photographer in the Photography Club; he died in an accident the winter before the story, and almost nobody noticed he was gone. Kou helps him take the photos he never got to take, and the two become friends, until Tsukasa twists his rumour into something monstrous. Tsukasa later remakes him with no memories of his life and makes him No. 3, the Hell of Mirrors. Cocky, vain and quick with an insulting nickname, he secretly longs for friends and to live as an ordinary human.
Tsukasa Yugi
AntagonistHanako's younger identical twin, also a ghost, who wears a black kimono over a white shirt and is followed by two black spirit orbs, the koku-joudai. Where Hanako grants wishes for the living, Tsukasa grants them for the dead, in his own way. Cheerful and childish one moment and unsettling the next, he believes humans and supernaturals should simply do whatever they want, whatever havoc follows. With his assistant Sakura and with Natsuhiko he alters the school's rumours from the broadcasting room, and he adores his brother, whom he calls Amane.
Teru Minamoto
SupportingKou's older brother and the eldest son of the Minamoto family: a second-year in the high school, student council president, the most popular boy at the school and Nene's crush when the story begins. Behind his calm, gentle manner he is a gifted and ruthless exorcist, trained since childhood, who spends his nights hunting supernaturals and so sleeps after school. He believes all supernaturals are evil, though he lets the Mokke and Tsuchigomori be. He dotes on Kou and their little sister Tiara, keeps a stern eye on his vice-president Akane, and in season 2 cures a school full of Mokke-bitten 'zombies' with salt water.
Aoi Akane
SupportingNene's classmate and best friend, a first-year in the high school known as the most popular girl in school. She loves rumours about the Seven Wonders and keeps passing them on to Nene, and the stories she tells have a habit of coming true. The two of them are both in the Gardening Club. Sweet and cheerful, she turns down her childhood friend Akane's proposals every single time, with a smile. In season 1 she vanishes into the Misaki Stairs' Boundary and everyone forgets her until Nene and Hanako bring her back; in season 2's second half she is carried off by the Sixth Wonder, Shinigami-sama.
Akane Aoi
SupportingAoi's childhood friend and Nene's classmate, the vice-president of the high school student council, who has been proposing to Aoi for years and being turned down. Behind his glasses he hides a secret: he is the Clock Keeper of the present, one of the three spirits who together make up No. 1 of the Seven Wonders, and he can stop time for five minutes. He accepted the role to save Aoi when another Clock Keeper put her in danger, which is why he distrusts supernaturals and Hanako. His name is the mirror image of hers: he is Akane Aoi, she is Aoi Akane.
Sakura Nanamine
AntagonistA cool, quiet third-year in the high school and president of the Broadcasting Club. Like Nene, she is bound to a ghost by a wish: she is Tsukasa's assistant, and he has promised to grant her wish to leave the school. She broadcasts the altered rumours that turn the school's supernaturals dangerous, invites Nene to a tea party that turns out to be a trap, and spends much of her time scolding Tsukasa and Natsuhiko; to put up with Tsukasa, she pictures him as a cat.
Natsuhiko Hyūga
AntagonistA tall, easy-going second-year in the high school and member of the Broadcasting Club who keeps trying to win Sakura's heart, with no success at all. He is not bound to Tsukasa, but he helps with his schemes anyway: in season 1 he sweet-talks Nene into following him so that she can be taken to Sakura's tea party, then ends up stranded with her in a strange place full of doors, where he carelessly opens one door too many.
Tsuchigomori
SupportingNo. 5 of the Seven Wonders and keeper of the 4 O'Clock Library, a room that can only be entered at 4 p.m. and whose books record everyone at the school: white for the living, black for the dead, and red ones about the future that must not be read. A spider-like supernatural, he lives as a teacher and is Kou's homeroom teacher, sarcastic and mischievous in private. Decades ago he taught Amane Yugi, who gave him a rock he believed had fallen from the Moon; it became Tsuchigomori's yorishiro. He bickers with Yako whenever they meet, but he still watches over Hanako, Nene and Kou as an ally.
Yako
SupportingNo. 2 of the Seven Wonders, the Misaki Stairs, whose fourth step is said to lead into another world. She is the fox spirit of an inari statue who loved Misaki, a teacher who could see her, taught her to read and write and gave her a pair of scissors, which became her yorishiro. After he was gone and her rumour was changed into a frightening one, she turned her Boundary into a trap for students until Nene unsealed the scissors. Proud and prickly, she threatens to bite anyone who calls her 'Fox-san', yet she later helps Hanako and Kou reach the Hell of Mirrors.
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Character FAQs
What is Hanako-kun's real name?
Amane Yugi. Nene learns it in episode 6, when she opens her own book in the 4 O'Clock Library and reads in its pages about the future that she will discover who Hanako really is. Amane was a student at Kamome Academy decades before the story, and his old teacher Tsuchigomori remembers a boy who loved the stars, dreamed of going to the Moon and gave him a rock he believed had fallen from it. Hanako rarely talks about that life, and the anime reveals it only a piece at a time.
Who are the Seven Wonders in Toilet-bound Hanako-kun?
The seven most famous supernatural rumours at Kamome Academy, each with its own Boundary and a yorishiro that holds its power. No. 1 is the Three Clock Keepers: Kako, who governs the past, Akane Aoi, the present, and Mirai, the future. No. 2 is the Misaki Stairs (Yako), No. 3 the Hell of Mirrors (taken over by Mitsuba at the end of season 1), No. 4 Shijima-san of the Art Room, No. 5 the 4 O'Clock Library (Tsuchigomori) and No. 6 the Reaper, Shinigami-sama, who comes to the fore in season 2. No. 7 is Hanako-san of the Toilet, Hanako himself, who leads them all.
Who is Tsukasa in Toilet-bound Hanako-kun?
Hanako's younger identical twin brother, also a ghost. He looks almost exactly like Hanako but dresses differently and is followed by black spirit orbs instead of white ones, and while Hanako grants wishes to the living, Tsukasa grants them to the dead. Working with Sakura Nanamine and Natsuhiko Hyūga, he changes the school's rumours to stir up trouble. In the season 1 finale Hanako admits that he was responsible for his twin's death, and promises to tell Nene the rest of the story someday.
Who voices Hanako, Nene and Kou?
In Japanese, Hanako is voiced by Megumi Ogata, who also plays his twin, Tsukasa; Nene by Akari Kitō, who also sings the anime's ending themes; and Kou by Shōya Chiba. In the English dub, Hanako is voiced by Justin Briner, Nene by Tia Ballard and Kou by Tyson Rinehart, with Austin Tindle as Tsukasa.
Do Hanako and Nene like each other?
Yes, though neither finds it easy to say. Hanako teases Nene constantly and calls her his assistant, but he protects her fiercely and, deep down, treasures her as a friend; Nene insists he is not her type, yet keeps choosing to stay by his side and wants to protect him in turn. In season 2's painted-world story she tells Amane that she loves Hanako. The anime keeps it a gentle, slow-burning romance and leaves where it goes open.
