About Toilet-bound Hanako-kun
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun (Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun, literally 'Earthbound Spirit Boy Hanako-kun') is a manga by AidaIro, the joint pen name of its writer, Iro, and its artist, Aida. It has run in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy since June 2014, had passed 10 million copies in circulation by February 2024 and reached its 25th volume in October 2025, with a 26th due in November 2026; Yen Press publishes it in English. Lerche's TV anime, directed by Masaomi Andō with series composition by Yasuhiro Nakanishi and music by Hiroshi Takaki, ran for 12 episodes from January to March 2020. A new anime project announced in December 2022 brought the After-School Hanako-kun comedy shorts in 2023 and 2024, then a 24-episode second season directed by Yōhei Fukui, shown in two halves from January to March and from July to September 2025.
Kamome Academy is full of rumours about its Seven Wonders, and the most famous says that if you knock three times on the third stall of the third-floor girls' bathroom in the old building, Hanako-san will grant your wish in exchange for something precious. Nene Yashiro, a first-year high-school girl who loves charms and occult stories, tries it in the hope of winning over her crush, and discovers that Hanako-san is a boy. When a mermaid's scale she swallows goes badly wrong, Hanako shares her curse to save her, and Nene becomes his assistant. By day she cleans his bathroom; with him and the young exorcist Kou Minamoto she looks into the school's supernaturals, whose nature changes with the rumours told about them, and quietly rewrites the dangerous rumours to keep the peace between humans and spirits.
Season 1 introduces the Wonders one by one, from the Misaki Stairs and the 4 O'Clock Library to the Hell of Mirrors, along with the mystery of who Hanako was in life and the arrival of his twin, Tsukasa, who is secretly changing the rumours. Season 2 turns to the Three Clock Keepers, a make-believe world painted by No. 4, Shijima-san of the Art Room, and the Sixth Wonder, Shinigami-sama, and draws Nene and Kou deeper into Hanako's past. The series mixes comedy, a gentle romance and ghost stories, and a review in NEO magazine singled out its look: thick outlines, bright colours and distinctive proportions that make it feel like a comic come to life.

What the Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Quiz Tests
Our Toilet-bound Hanako-kun quiz covers the 36 episodes of the TV anime: season 1 (2020) and both halves of season 2 (2025). It leaves out the After-School Hanako-kun shorts and anything that happens only in the manga. Easy levels cover the basics: who made it, Kamome Academy and its Seven Wonders, how to summon Hanako, the mermaid's scale and the main cast. The middle levels follow season 1 from the Misaki Stairs, the Confession Tree and the 4 O'Clock Library to Mitsuba, the tea party, the Hell of Mirrors and the mermaid's servants, along with the Three Clock Keepers at the start of season 2. The hard levels are for close watchers: the Mokke 'zombies', Shijima's painted world and its way out, Shinigami-sama and the red house in season 2's second half, a voice-acting double and what the Japanese title really means.
Key Characters
Hanako, No. 7 of the Seven Wonders, is a cheerful, teasing ghost with a kitchen knife, two white spirit orbs and a strong sense of duty: he grants wishes, keeps the school's supernaturals in line and says very little about Amane Yugi, the star-loving boy he used to be. Nene Yashiro, his assistant, is romantic, kind and easily flustered, and the more she learns about him, the more she wants to protect him. Kou Minamoto, the young exorcist sent to get rid of Hanako, becomes his friend instead, and his bond with Mitsuba, a cheeky ghost and former classmate whom Tsukasa remakes as No. 3, is one of the series' most moving threads. Tsukasa, Hanako's playful, unpredictable twin, works against them with Sakura Nanamine and Natsuhiko Hyūga of the Broadcasting Club. Around them are Kou's brother Teru, student council president and a formidable exorcist; Nene's best friend Aoi and Akane, Aoi's devoted childhood friend and secretly a Clock Keeper; the fellow Wonders Yako and Tsuchigomori; and the Mokke, rabbit-like little thieves who will do almost anything for candy.

Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Fun Facts
- AidaIro, the name on the cover, is two people: the story is written by Iro and drawn by Aida, and their pen name simply joins the two names together.
- Megumi Ogata voices both twins, Hanako and Tsukasa, in Japanese, so whenever the brothers face each other, one actor is playing both sides of the conversation.
- Season 1's opening, 'No.7', is credited to the Jibaku Shōnen Band, a unit of two singers, one of them Masayoshi Ōishi, and the arranger ZiNG. Ōishi went on to sing both of season 2's openings, 'L'oN' and 'Kagome Kagome', while Akari Kitō, Nene's voice, sings all three endings: 'Tiny Light', 'With a Wish' and 'mo∞ent'.
- Season 1 went out in the middle of the night (TBS listed its first episode at 25:58, or 1:58 a.m.), but season 2 moved to Sunday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. on 28 TBS-network stations across Japan.
- Toshiya Miyata of the idol group Kis-My-Ft2 guest-starred in season 2's episode 21, 'The Curse', as Katakuri, a kind young man whom Nene befriends.
- Nene's best friend and the boy who keeps proposing to her have mirror-image names: she is Aoi Akane and he is Akane Aoi.
Toilet-bound Hanako-kun Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes of Toilet-bound Hanako-kun are there?
Thirty-six, in two seasons. Season 1 has 12 episodes (10 January to 27 March 2020). Season 2 has 24, shown in two halves of 12 with a break between them: the first from 12 January to 30 March 2025 and the second from 6 July to 21 September 2025, numbered 1 to 24 within the season. The eight After-School Hanako-kun shorts (four in 2023 and four in 2024) are a separate series and are not part of the count.
Is Toilet-bound Hanako-kun finished?
The anime is complete for now: season 2 ended on 21 September 2025, and no third season had been announced on the official sites by November 2026. The story itself is not finished, though. The manga is still running in Monthly GFantasy: its 25th volume came out in October 2025, a 26th is due on 27 November 2026, and season 2 stops around chapter 92, far short of the latest chapters.
What order should I watch Toilet-bound Hanako-kun in?
Watch season 1 (12 episodes), then season 2's first half and second half (24 episodes). Season 1 adapted the manga slightly out of order and saved the Three Clock Keepers story for season 2, so simply watching the seasons in order works. The After-School Hanako-kun shorts, light comedy side stories about the cast's everyday lives, aired between the two seasons; they can be watched any time after season 1 but are not needed to follow the story. To read on after the anime, season 2 ends around chapter 92, at the start of the manga's volume 19.
Where can I watch Toilet-bound Hanako-kun?
Funimation licensed season 1 and streamed an English simuldub, and the series later moved to Crunchyroll, which licenses the anime and the After-School Hanako-kun shorts; Animax Asia has carried it in Southeast Asia. In Japan, season 2 streamed on services including ABEMA, d Anime Store, Netflix, Prime Video and U-NEXT. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
What is Toilet-bound Hanako-kun about?
Nene Yashiro, a romance-obsessed first-year at Kamome Academy, summons the school's most famous ghost, Hanako-san of the Toilet, to make her crush like her back, and discovers that Hanako is a boy.
