Wind Breaker Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Wind Breaker is set in Makochi, a town whose shopping street is guarded by the students of Furin High School, a boys' school with the lowest marks and the toughest fighters around. Two years before the story begins, Furin's delinquents started protecting the town, and the townspeople began calling them Bofurin. Its leader is Hajime Umemiya, with four third-years, the Four Kings, beneath him, and every class has a Grade Captain and two vice-captains. Into this arrives Haruka Sakura, a loner from outside the town who came to fight his way to the top, and the cast grows around him: his classmates in 1-1, from Nirei, Suo and Sugishita to the gamer Mitsuki Kiryu and the muscle-obsessed Taiga Tsugeura; his seniors, such as the second-year Grade Captain Ren Kaji; Kotoha at Café Pothos; and the rival gangs Bofurin meets, Shishitoren, KEEL and, on Keisei Street, GRAVEL, which the suited team Roppo Ichiza helps Bofurin fight. This guide covers the two TV seasons of the CloverWorks anime, not the manga beyond them.

Protagonist

A first-year in class 1-1 at Furin High School who comes to Makochi from outside the town to fight his way to the top. Shunned all his life for his looks, with hair that is half black and half white and eyes of two different colours, he trusts nothing but his own fists and goes red whenever anyone thanks him. Bofurin's habit of protecting the town baffles him at first, but after the fights with Shishitoren his class makes him its Grade Captain, and he starts fighting for other people.

He becomes one of Sakura's two vice-captains, and in season 2 he starts learning self-defence from Suo.

Wind Breaker Character FAQs

What is Bofurin in Wind Breaker?

Bofurin is what the people of Makochi call the students of Furin High School, who began protecting the town two years before the story starts; the name gives the series its English title, Wind Breaker. Its leader is Hajime Umemiya, with the Four Kings beneath him, and every class has a Grade Captain and two vice-captains. In Sakura's class, 1-1, Sakura is Grade Captain, with Suo and Nirei as his vice-captains.

Who are the Four Kings of Bofurin?

The four third-years who serve directly under Umemiya, each leading a team: Toma Hiragi (Tamon Team, the team Sakura's class belongs to), Tasuku Tsubakino (Jikoku Team), Takumi Momose (Zojo Team), who loves drawing, and Saku Mizuki (Komoku Team), who wears glasses and a ponytail and loves sentai heroes. The team names come from the Four Heavenly Kings of Buddhism.

Are Umemiya and Kotoha brother and sister?

Not by birth. They grew up in the same group home, and Umemiya calls Kotoha his little sister and dotes on her, while she tells him not to. Sakura finds this out in episode 4, along with the fact that Kotoha, who seems so grown-up, is only 16, the same age as him.

Is Tsubakino a boy?

Yes. Satoru Nii said in a 2024 interview with Kodansha USA that Tsubakino identifies as male and simply loves feminine clothes and cute things, and that being true to what he loves is the core of the character. In the anime, Sakura's lack of judgement about how Tsubakino looks is what makes Tsubakino take to him.

Who is the main villain of Wind Breaker?

There is no single villain in the anime. Each story has its rival gang: Shishitoren in season 1, who end up as friends, then KEEL under Shingo Natori and GRAVEL under Shuhei Suzuri in season 2. The season 2 finale reveals that Yamato Endo, a former Furin student, was behind the clashes with KEEL and GRAVEL, and it ends with him and Chika Takiishi plotting their next move; in the manga, the two lead a group called Noroshi.
