About Wind Breaker
Wind Breaker (stylised WIND BREAKER) is a manga by Satoru Nii that has run on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket website since January 2021; by September 2026 it filled 27 volumes, and Kodansha USA publishes it in English. CloverWorks adapted it for television, with Toshifumi Akai directing, Hiroshi Seko writing the series composition and scripts, character designs by Taishi Kawakami and music by Ryo Takahashi. The first season of 13 episodes aired in Japan from April to June 2024 and the second, of 12, from April to June 2025, both in the Super Animeism Turbo slot on MBS, TBS and the other JNN stations: 25 episodes in all. The story has also been told as a stage play (January 2025), a mobile game (March 2025) and a live-action film from Warner Bros. (December 2025).
Haruka Sakura has spent his life being shunned for the way he looks, with hair that is half black and half white and eyes of two different colours, and the only thing he is proud of is his fighting. He arrives from outside the town of Makochi to enrol at Furin High School, which is famous for its fighters and not for its marks, meaning to fight his way to the top. What he finds instead is that Furin's students have spent the last two years protecting the town, and the people there call them Bofurin, the Wind Breaker. Sakura is thrown by kindness from every direction: from Kotoha at Café Pothos, from his classmates Nirei, Suo and Sugishita, and from Bofurin's easy-going leader, Hajime Umemiya. Season 1 builds to a set of one-on-one fights against the rival gang Shishitoren and ends with Sakura as his class's Grade Captain and a classmate's friend in trouble with the gang KEEL. Season 2 settles that fight, then follows the Four Kings' Tasuku Tsubakino to the neon-lit Keisei Street, where Bofurin helps the suited team Roppo Ichiza protect a young singer from the gang GRAVEL.
Wind Breaker belongs to the yankī, or delinquent, genre, but turns it around: its delinquents are the town's protectors, the townspeople love them, and the fights are about who and what is being protected. Umemiya calls a fight a conversation, and the fight with Shishitoren ends with the two gangs becoming friends. Nii has said that it felt less like a delinquent manga than a sports manga, and that his starting point was a feel-good story with a cast of cool boys. At its centre is a loner learning to accept other people's help. The manga ranked 20th in the web category of the 2021 Next Manga Awards and was nominated for the Kodansha Manga Award and the Harvey Award for Best Manga in 2025, and more than 10 million copies were in circulation by September 2025. The anime was nominated for Best Action at the 9th Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

What the Wind Breaker Quiz Tests
Our Wind Breaker quiz covers the 25 episodes of the CloverWorks anime, seasons 1 and 2. It does not ask about the manga beyond the point where season 2 stops, the live-action film or the stage play, and it is about the Japanese manga by Satoru Nii, not the Korean cycling webtoon of the same name. Easy levels cover the basics: who made the series, Furin High School, Makochi and Café Pothos, what Bofurin is, Sakura's two-tone look and why he comes to town, and the main cast. The middle levels follow the story in order, from Hiragi's rescue in episode 1 and Umemiya's voice over the speakers to the five one-on-one fights against Shishitoren, the election of class 1-1's Grade Captain, the rescue from KEEL, Sakura's cold, Tsubakino's Jikoku Team and Roppo Ichiza on Keisei Street. The hard levels are for people who watched closely: Togame's nickname for Sakura, what makes Sugishita unique, Tsubakino's lieutenants, KEEL's emblem, where the Four Kings' team names come from, Nirei's self-defence move, and who was behind the season 2 fights.
Key Characters
Haruka Sakura is a lone fighter who says he cares only for strong people, goes red at the slightest thanks, and cannot walk past someone in trouble; watching him learn to lead a class, and to let others help him, is the heart of the series. Akihiko Nirei, the first classmate he meets, is no good in a fight but more determined than anyone, a cheerful boy with a notebook full of data on everyone he thinks is cool. Hayato Suo, the classmate with the eyepatch, is polite, smiling and impossible to read, with a fighting style like kung fu and aikido and a cold streak for anyone who lacks manners, while Kyotaro Sugishita, huge and silent, is devoted to Umemiya and treats Sakura as his rival. Above them is Hajime Umemiya, Bofurin's leader, a warm, easy-going third-year who grows vegetables and stops a school in its tracks with one shout, and his Four Kings, among them the worried, stomach-medicine-carrying Toma Hiragi and Tasuku Tsubakino, who wears a skirt and heels, wants to be called Tsubaki-chan and dances at the Burlesque Bar Ougi. Kotoha Tachibana, who runs Café Pothos and grew up in the same group home as Umemiya, often tells Sakura home truths he would rather not hear. Each rival gang brings its own leaders: Shishitoren's Choji Tomiyama and Jo Togame, KEEL's Shingo Natori, and GRAVEL's Shuhei Suzuri.

Wind Breaker Fun Facts
- Satoru Nii first tried to write the story with Umemiya as its hero. When that did not work, he created Sakura, an outsider who sees Furin and its town with fresh eyes.
- Nii gave Sakura his two-tone hair and mismatched eyes so that readers would know him at a glance as the main character, and has likened his light, wiry way of moving to a stray cat's.
- Nii has said that he did not set out to draw a delinquent manga at all: it felt more like a sports manga, with the excitement of fighting off an enemy that he associates with sentai hero shows. His previous series was a badminton comedy.
- Furin High School's name is written with the characters for a wind chime (fūrin). The town's name for its students, Bofurin, gives the series its English title, Wind Breaker. Nii chose green as Bofurin's team colour, to stand for plants.
- In Japan, episode 2 (2024) and episode 15 (2025) both aired 1 hour and 32 minutes later than scheduled, because the network was showing the Masters golf tournament in both years.
- Hiroshi Seko, who wrote the series composition and scripts for both seasons, also wrote the anime of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Vinland Saga and Dandadan.
Wind Breaker Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes of Wind Breaker are there?
Twenty-five, in two seasons. Season 1 has 13 episodes, aired in Japan from 5 April to 28 June 2024, and season 2 has 12, numbered 14 to 25, aired from 4 April to 20 June 2025. Japanese TV listings give each premiere as the previous night at 24:26.
Is Wind Breaker finished?
No. The manga is still running on Magazine Pocket, with 27 volumes out by September 2026. The anime has two seasons, which adapt roughly the first 90 chapters and stop just after the GRAVEL story, as a new threat appears. No third season had been announced as of October 2026. To carry on from the end of season 2, start the manga at volume 12.
What order should I watch Wind Breaker in?
Watch season 1 and then season 2; together they are the whole anime so far. The live-action film released in Japan in December 2025 is a separate adaptation of the manga with its own cast, so it is not needed to follow the series, and neither are the stage play or the mobile game.
Where can I watch Wind Breaker?
Aniplex of America licenses the anime and streams it on Crunchyroll, and the English dub began airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block on 11 October 2026. In Southeast Asia it is licensed by Muse Communication and has been shown on Animax Asia, and in Japan it streams on many services, including Netflix, ABEMA and Prime Video. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
What is Wind Breaker about?
Haruka Sakura, a loner who has only ever trusted his fists, comes to Furin High School to become its strongest fighter, and finds that its students have become Bofurin, a group that protects the town. As he makes friends, becomes his class's Grade Captain and fights rival gangs to protect the people around him, he learns to fight for others for the first time. It is the Japanese manga by Satoru Nii and its CloverWorks anime, not the South Korean cycling webtoon Wind Breaker by Yongseok Jo, which is a different work with a different story.
