Beastars Characters
The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.
Beastars is set in a modern city of anthropomorphic animals, split between carnivores and herbivores, where eating meat is a crime because the only meat there is comes from other animals. Most of the story's first half takes place at Cherryton Academy, a boarding school that houses each group in its own dormitories, and much of it inside the school's drama club, where predators and prey work side by side. The cast is built around that divide. Almost every major character is defined by what their species makes other people assume about them, and by how far they go along with it: a wolf who would rather not frighten anyone, a rabbit who refuses to be treated as fragile, a deer determined never to look weak. As the story moves off campus, into the Black Market and the lion gang that controls it, the line between the two sides gets harder to hold. This guide covers the Netflix anime's three seasons and the main story of Paru Itagaki's manga, not the Beast Complex short stories.
All Beastars Characters
Legoshi
ProtagonistA seventeen-year-old grey wolf in his second year at Cherryton, where he works on the drama club's stage crew. He is tall and alarming to look at, and quiet, awkward and gentle in practice; much of the story is him trying to work out whether what he feels for the rabbit Haru is love or appetite. He takes it on himself to find out who killed his clubmate Tem. His mother was half Komodo dragon, which gave him his grandfather's narrow-pupilled eyes and an immunity to Komodo venom.
Haru
Main CastA white dwarf rabbit in her third year and the only member of Cherryton's gardening club. Classmates shun her over rumours about her private life, and she resents being treated as fragile simply because she is small. She is blunt, brave and unwilling to pretend, which is what draws both Legoshi and Louis to her. She is kidnapped by the Shishigumi in Season 1, graduates before the final season, and goes on to university, where Melon gets close to her by posing as a professor.
Louis
Main CastA red deer, the drama club's leading actor and Cherryton's candidate to become Beastar. He is proud, controlling and determined never to look weak. As a small child he was kept as livestock to be sold to carnivores, until the head of the Horns Conglomerate adopted him as his heir; a number 4 on the sole of his foot is what remains of that time. In Season 2 he leaves school to lead the Shishigumi, and he later gives Legoshi his own leg to win the fight with Riz.
Juno
Main CastA grey wolf in her first year who joins the drama club's acting team. Legoshi steps in when she is being bullied, and she falls for him on the spot. Unlike Legoshi, she is entirely at ease with being a carnivore, and she wants to become Beastar so that carnivores are admired for their strength rather than feared, which sets her up as Louis's rival. At the Meteor Festival she praises Legoshi in front of the crowd for saving Haru. Later she decides she is not suited to the title.
Gohin
Main CastA giant panda doctor who runs a clinic in the Black Market for carnivores whose predatory instincts have taken over. He finds Legoshi collapsed in a back alley, at first takes him for a dangerous case, and ends up as his friend and mentor. In Season 2 Legoshi becomes his pupil, learning to master his hunger and to catch carnivores who have lost control without biting them. Gohin is strict and plain-spoken with him, but fair, and in the final season he fits Legoshi with false fangs.
Jack
SupportingA Labrador Retriever and Legoshi's oldest friend. They met as small children, when Legoshi was the only one at the playground willing to play with him. He is cheerful and hard-working, the top student in his year, and constantly worried about how other people see Legoshi. He is one of the few who knows about Legoshi's Komodo dragon ancestry, which the school does not. He shares dormitory room 701 with Legoshi and the other canines until Legoshi leaves.
Bill
SupportingA Bengal tiger and one of the drama club's actors, proud of being a carnivore and keen for carnivores to be admired as much as herbivores. When Louis is injured, Bill takes over the lead role, and his secret use of rabbit's blood before the performance leads Legoshi to fight him on stage. The two argue often, with Bill usually starting it, and he tells Legoshi to accept what he is. They end up friends, and in the manga Louis names Bill the club's next head.
Riz
AntagonistA brown bear over two metres tall and a well-liked member of the drama club. The law requires bears of his size to take medication that limits their strength; its side effects include headaches and bouts of aggression, and in one such episode he killed his friend Tem. He has since convinced himself that Tem was willing. Legoshi works out the truth, and the two fight on New Year's Eve. Riz gives himself up afterwards and goes to juvenile prison, where Pina visits him.
Melon
AntagonistThe villain of the final season: a 24-year-old whose mother was a leopard and whose father was a gazelle. He looks mostly like a gazelle but has a leopard's jaws, claws and eyes, and hides his spots under tattoos and his fangs behind a mask. Cruel and manipulative, he takes over the Shishigumi after Louis leaves, profits from the herbivore-derived drink Kines, and poses as a professor at Haru's college. He shoots Legoshi and later throws him into the sea.
Yahya
SupportingA horse in his fifties who holds the Beastar title and works as a vigilante with contacts in the police. As teenagers he and Gosha fought crime together and meant to become Beastars as a pair; when Gosha gave that up to raise a family, Yahya never forgave him, and he turns the grudge on Legoshi. He investigates the drink Kines with help from the 500 Cornered Rats, and in the end asks Legoshi to help him bring Melon down.
Gosha
SupportingLegoshi's maternal grandfather, a 54-year-old Komodo dragon and his only living relative. As a young man he was Yahya's partner in fighting crime and a candidate for Beastar, but he gave up that future when he fell for a grey wolf, Toki, and they had a hybrid daughter, Leano — Legoshi's mother. He is calm and avoids trouble unless his family is threatened. He paid Legoshi's school fees and tracks him down after he drops out.
Ibuki
SupportingA lion in the Shishigumi, calmer and cleverer than most of the gang. Sold as a twelve-year-old to be made into drugs, he ran away, lived alone in the Black Market and joined the Shishigumi at eighteen. It was Ibuki who made Louis the gang's new boss, and he looked after the young deer almost like a son, buying him salads when he could not eat meat. When Louis tries to leave the gang, Ibuki confronts him and is killed by Free.
Beastars Character FAQs
Who is the main character of Beastars?
Legoshi, a grey wolf in his second year at Cherryton Academy who works on the drama club's stage crew. He is gentle and self-effacing despite his size, and the story follows his attempts to understand his feelings for the rabbit Haru and to find out who killed his clubmate Tem.
Who killed Tem in Beastars?
Riz, a brown bear in the drama club. Legoshi identifies him in Season 2, and the two fight on New Year's Eve; Legoshi wins only after eating Louis's leg, which Louis offers him. Riz gives himself up and is sent to juvenile prison.
Is Legoshi a pure grey wolf?
No. His mother, Leano, was half grey wolf and half Komodo dragon, so Legoshi is a quarter Komodo dragon. He inherited his grandfather Gosha's eyes and an immunity to Komodo dragon venom, though he is not venomous himself. At school he is registered simply as a grey wolf.
What animal is Haru?
A white dwarf rabbit — a Netherland dwarf. She is a year above Legoshi, the only member of the gardening club, and far tougher than her size suggests.
Who is the villain of the final season?
Melon, a leopard–gazelle hybrid who takes over the Shishigumi after Louis leaves. He trades in the herbivore-derived drink Kines, poses as one of Haru's college professors and twice comes close to killing Legoshi.
