Beastars Quiz

Gentle grey wolf Legoshi works backstage in his school's drama club, in a city of animals where eating meat is a crime, and finds his instincts stirred by a rabbit named Haru.

About Beastars

Beastars is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki. It ran in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion from September 2016 to October 2020, 196 chapters collected in 22 volumes, and VIZ Media publishes it in English. The anime adaptation is made entirely in computer animation by the studio Orange, directed by Shin'ichi Matsumi with series composition by Nanami Higuchi and music by Satoru Kōsaki, and it is licensed by Netflix. It ran to 48 episodes across three seasons, from October 2019 to March 2026.

The setting is a modern city populated entirely by anthropomorphic animals. Carnivores and herbivores live, work and study side by side, and eating meat is strictly illegal, since the only meat there is comes from other animals. The story opens at Cherryton Academy, a boarding school, where an alpaca named Tem has been killed and eaten on campus. Suspicion falls on the carnivores, among them Legoshi, a tall, timid grey wolf on the drama club's stage crew. Around the same time he meets Haru, a dwarf rabbit, and finds he cannot tell whether what he feels for her is love or hunger.

From there the series widens out. The drama club's star, a red deer named Louis, wants to become Beastar, the honoured title given to an outstanding animal who leads society. The Black Market, where meat is traded illegally, and the Shishigumi, the lion gang that dominates it, pull Legoshi and Louis off campus. Season 2 turns into a hunt for Tem's killer, and the final season follows Legoshi out of school entirely, into a cheap apartment block and a fight with Melon, a hybrid who hates what he is. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction reads the carnivore–herbivore divide as an allegory for prejudice and power, with masculinity and nature versus nurture as its central concerns.

What the Beastars Quiz Tests

Our Beastars quiz covers the Netflix anime's three seasons and the main story of Paru Itagaki's manga. It does not ask about the Beast Complex short stories or Itagaki's later series. Easy levels cover the premise: who is which animal, Cherryton Academy and its clubs, what a Beastar is, the Shishigumi and the Black Market, and who made the series. The middle levels move through the story in order — the rabbit's blood that starts a fight on stage, Haru's kidnapping, Louis's past and his turn as a gang boss, the hunt for Tem's killer and the duel on New Year's Eve — then into the final season with Beast Apartments, Gosha, Yahya, the Kines drink and Melon. The hard levels go to the details: the number of Legoshi's dormitory room and the number marked on Louis's foot, where Legoshi's name comes from, the gangs of the Black Market, Yahya's blindfold, and lines from the manga.

Key Characters

Legoshi is a grey wolf who has spent his life being feared and has learned to make himself small in response, slouching and hiding his teeth. The series is about what happens when that stops working: he falls for a rabbit, goes after a murderer, and has to decide what kind of carnivore he is going to be. Haru, the rabbit, is the opposite of what everyone expects of her species — blunt, unafraid and tired of being treated as breakable. Louis, the red deer who leads the drama club, is ambitious, controlling and terrified of looking weak, and he is hiding an early childhood spent as livestock. Juno, a younger grey wolf, wants to become Beastar and is perfectly happy being a carnivore, which is exactly what Legoshi is not. Behind them stands Gohin, the panda doctor who teaches Legoshi to control his hunger, and later Legoshi's grandfather Gosha and the Beastar Yahya, two old partners whose falling-out shapes the final season.

Beastars Fun Facts

  • Paru Itagaki is the daughter of Keisuke Itagaki, creator of Baki the Grappler. Tabloids reported it in 2018, and she confirmed it in a joint interview with her father in 2019, saying she had kept it quiet so as not to be accused of nepotism.
  • Itagaki covers her face at public appearances with a chicken mask modelled on Legom, the hen at Cherryton who sells her eggs to the school shop.
  • Legoshi's name is a reference to Bela Lugosi. Itagaki modelled his face on the French actor Mathieu Amalric and has said she sometimes thinks of Kenichi Matsuyama when drawing his body.
  • Legoshi and Haru are older than Beastars itself. In 2013, while studying at Musashino Art University, Itagaki made a dōjinshi called Beast Complex about a wolf named Legoshi, then working as a stylist's assistant, and a rabbit named Haru.
  • In 2018 the manga won the Manga Taishō — the first Akita Shoten title ever to do so — as well as the New Creator Prize at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes and the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen.
  • The Season 1 opening, "Wild Side" by ALI, won Best Opening Sequence at the 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Season 2's opening "Kaibutsu" and ending "Yasashii Suisei" are both by YOASOBI.

What is Beastars about?

It follows Legoshi, a gentle grey wolf at a boarding school for animals, in a society where carnivores and herbivores live together and eating meat is a crime. A classmate's murder, his feelings for a rabbit named Haru and his rivalry with the drama club's star, Louis, force him to face the predator in himself. Along the way it deals frankly with prejudice, violence and growing up.
