Horimiya Characters

The full cast guide — every key character, their role, abilities, and place in the story.

Horimiya is set among a group of friends at Katagiri High School in their last two years there. At its centre are Kyoko Hori, the popular, top-of-the-class girl who secretly runs her family's home and looks after her little brother, and Izumi Miyamura, the silent classmate everyone dismisses as a gloomy otaku, who turns out to be someone else entirely outside school. Their chance meeting pulls a whole circle together: Hori's best friend Yuki Yoshikawa and the good-natured Toru Ishikawa, the loud Shu Iura, the student council of president Kakeru Sengoku, Remi Ayasaki and Sakura Kono, and later the handsome Akane Yanagi and the younger Honoka Sawada. Outside school there are Miyamura's middle-school best friend Koichi Shindo and Hori's family: her brother Sota and their parents Kyosuke and Yuriko, who are rarely home. Almost everyone is hiding a second side or an unspoken crush, and most of the story is about letting other people see it. This guide covers the two CloverWorks TV series, Horimiya (2021) and Horimiya: The Missing Pieces (2023).

All Horimiya Characters

Kyoko Hori

Protagonist

A pretty, popular girl with excellent grades who keeps her home life to herself: with both parents working, she does the housework and looks after her much younger brother, Sota. When her classmate Miyamura walks Sota home, the two agree to keep each other's secrets, and their friendship turns into love; she settles it by telling her father that Miyamura is her boyfriend. She has a quick temper when she is flustered, loves horror films, gets jealous easily and worries about what will happen to the two of them after graduation.

Izumi Miyamura

Protagonist

Hori's classmate, seen at school as a silent, gloomy otaku behind long hair and glasses, and a different person outside it, with piercings and tattoos. He was always alone at school before, and it is through Hori that he finds friends. Gentle and honest, he struggles with his studies, helps out at his family's cake shop and is scared of horror films. Once he and Hori start dating, he cuts his hair and gives up the glasses, and suddenly the girls notice him. At Christmas he tells Hori they should get married.

Toru Ishikawa

Main Cast

A friendly, straightforward classmate with nothing two-faced about him, and Shu Iura's childhood friend. He has feelings for Hori at the start, but after she turns him down he becomes Miyamura's close friend and stays loyal when the two start dating. He poses as Yuki's boyfriend so that she can turn down Akane Yanagi, receives Sakura's confession, and by Christmas admits to his friends that it is Yuki he cares about, even though the two of them are not technically dating.

Yuki Yoshikawa

Main Cast

Hori's best friend, a cheerful girl who gets along with everyone and is one of the first people to see Miyamura out of his school disguise. Behind the smile she is more sensitive than she lets on and rarely says what she wants. Watching Sakura grow close to Ishikawa stirs up feelings she cannot yet name; she tries her hand at baking, with burnt results, and agrees to a pretend relationship with him to turn down Yanagi, which only makes things more complicated.

Kakeru Sengoku

Main Cast

The student council president of Katagiri High, who keeps the top overall grades in his year but lacks stamina and is no good at sport. He has known Hori since they were small children, and in the first episodes the council leans on her for help with its paperwork. He is going out with Remi Ayasaki and is terrified of bugs. He gives the speech at the graduation ceremony, and in The Missing Pieces he has the boys over for a sleepover and turns out to have a father with an old history with Hori's.

Remi Ayasaki

Main Cast

The student council's mascot, popular with the boys, endlessly curious and happy to say outrageous things with a smile. She is Sengoku's girlfriend and Sakura's friend, and when Sakura feels plain next to her, Remi stands up for her and gives her courage. It is Remi who accidentally dropped the budget report that got Hori into trouble. As graduation nears she wants a trip with everyone and worries that her friends will drift apart.

Sakura Kono

Main Cast

A member of the student council and its most thoughtful one: a top student and a good cook, considerate and modest. She falls for Ishikawa when he helps her pick up papers she dropped, bakes him cookies after he lends her his jersey, and eventually tells him how she feels without asking for an answer. Not much of an athlete, she dreads sports day. In The Missing Pieces she becomes friends with Yanagi over a manga they both love.

Shu Iura

Supporting

A loud, endlessly cheerful classmate who always goes at his own pace and is Ishikawa's childhood friend. At home he is a protective older brother: when his sister Motoko struggles with her high-school entrance exams he asks Hori to tutor her, and in The Missing Pieces he is far from pleased that Motoko has a crush on a classmate. His noise terrifies the shy Honoka Sawada, though he has no idea.

Akane Yanagi

Supporting

A student from another class, counted among the best-looking boys at Katagiri High, polite and good-natured, with eyesight so poor that he often mistakes one person for another. He asks Yuki out, and though she turns him down, the group takes him in as a friend. The Missing Pieces shows that he is hopeless at getting up in the morning, and that he and Sakura share a favourite manga.

Koichi Shindo

Supporting

Miyamura's best friend from middle school, who goes to a different high school, the most academic one in the area. Cheerful and a bit of a joker, he is the one person Miyamura gets flustered and rude with, and he is moved to see Miyamura's new look. His girlfriend Chika is the girl Sota sees Miyamura walking with, which leads to the misunderstanding that ends with Hori and Miyamura getting together.

Honoka Sawada

Supporting

A younger student who adores Hori and declares Miyamura her rival, then discovers that she lives in the apartment next door to him. She is uneasy around boys, the loud Iura most of all. She had lost her older brother a year earlier, and learning this makes Miyamura more sympathetic to her. She has few friends in her own year, and slowly grows closer to Miyamura and the rest of the group.

Sota Hori

Supporting

Hori's little brother, much younger than her, whom Miyamura walks home after he gets hurt in the first episode. Miyamura keeps coming back to play with him, and Sota looks up to him as a big brother. He is also the one who worries, in tears, that Miyamura will take his sister away, until Miyamura reassures him. Their parents, Kyosuke and Yuriko, both work and are often away, and Kyosuke had been gone so long that the family had all but forgotten him.

Yuki Yoshikawa. Ishikawa starts out with feelings for Hori and later pretends to be Yuki's boyfriend so that she can turn down Akane Yanagi.
