About Horimiya
Horimiya began as Hori-san to Miyamura-kun ('Hori and Miyamura'), a four-panel web comic that Hero, the pen name of Hiroki Adachi, posted on his own website from February 2007 to December 2011. In October 2011 Daisuke Hagiwara began redrawing the story as Horimiya, with Hero still writing it, in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy; the manga ran until March 2021 and filled 16 volumes, a 17th volume of new chapters followed in July 2023, and Yen Press publishes it in English. CloverWorks adapted it as a 13-episode TV anime directed by Masashi Ishihama, with series composition by Takao Yoshioka, character designs by Haruko Iizuka and music by Masaru Yokoyama, which aired from 10 January to 4 April 2021. The same director and writer returned for Horimiya: The Missing Pieces (Horimiya -piece- in Japan), 13 more episodes from 1 July to 23 September 2023 that adapt manga chapters the first series had skipped.
Kyoko Hori is pretty, clever and popular at school, but with both parents working she spends her evenings doing the housework and looking after her much younger brother, Sota, and she keeps that side of her life to herself. Izumi Miyamura, the quiet classmate everyone writes off as a gloomy otaku, is a different person outside school, with piercings and tattoos. When he walks an injured Sota home, each discovers the other's hidden self. They agree to keep each other's secrets, and a friendship neither of them expected slowly turns into love. Around them a circle of friends forms, among them Hori's best friend Yuki Yoshikawa, the good-natured Toru Ishikawa, the loud Shu Iura and the student council of Kakeru Sengoku, Remi Ayasaki and Sakura Kono, and nearly all of them are hiding a second side or a crush of their own.
The 2021 series moves briskly from that first meeting through the leads' final year to Christmas and graduation, leaving many of the manga's chapters for later; The Missing Pieces goes back for them, with episodes built around a class trip, sports day, a kotatsu, a sleepover, Valentine's Day and Hori's parents. Both series won Best Romance at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the first at the 6th awards in 2022, where Miyamura was also nominated for Best Boy, and The Missing Pieces at the 8th in 2024. A live-action film and TV drama, produced by Horipro and directed by Hana Matsumoto, were released in Japan in February 2021, while the first anime was still on air.

What the Horimiya Quiz Tests
Our Horimiya quiz covers the 26 episodes of the two TV anime, Horimiya (2021) and Horimiya: The Missing Pieces (2023). It uses nothing that appears only in the manga or the web comic, and nothing from the OVAs or the live-action drama. Easy levels cover the basics: Hori and Miyamura's two sides, how they meet, Hori's family, Miyamura's family business, the friends and the student council, and the first opening theme. The middle levels follow the 2021 series in order, from Hori's hunt for Miyamura's first name and the lost budget report through the misunderstanding that brings the two together, Sakura's crush on Ishikawa and Yuki's pretend relationship, to Iura's sister and her exams, plus the sports day and cooking class of The Missing Pieces. The hard levels are for people who watched closely: what Miyamura says on the walk home at Christmas, what happens during the graduation speech, Hori's father's old history, Motoko's crush, the classmate who makes Hori jealous, a teacher's subject, a one-word answer to Sawada, the director and the second opening theme.
Key Characters
Kyoko Hori is admired at school for her looks and her grades, but at home she is the one who cooks, cleans and looks after her little brother Sota while their parents work, and she has a temper and a jealous streak that her friends know well. Izumi Miyamura looks like the class's gloomiest otaku and turns out to be gentle, honest and, now and then, surprisingly sharp-tongued, with piercings, tattoos and a family cake shop; finding friends through Hori changes him, and halfway through the 2021 series he cuts his hair and drops the glasses. Toru Ishikawa starts out as Hori's admirer and becomes one of Miyamura's closest friends, while Hori's best friend Yuki Yoshikawa hides her feelings for Ishikawa behind a cheerful smile. The student council is a trio of opposites: president Kakeru Sengoku, top of his year and hopeless at sport, his outspoken girlfriend Remi Ayasaki, and the modest, hard-working Sakura Kono, who falls for Ishikawa. Shu Iura, Ishikawa's noisy childhood friend, the handsome but poor-sighted Akane Yanagi, Hori's devoted junior Honoka Sawada and Miyamura's middle-school best friend Koichi Shindo complete the circle.

Horimiya Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
How many episodes of Horimiya are there?
Twenty-six, across two TV series by CloverWorks: Horimiya, 13 episodes from January to April 2021, and Horimiya: The Missing Pieces, 13 episodes from July to September 2023. The Missing Pieces is effectively the second season, though it is made up of stories from the manga that the first series skipped rather than a continuation after its ending.
Is Horimiya finished?
Yes. The manga finished its run in Monthly GFantasy in March 2021 after 16 volumes, with a 17th volume of new chapters published in July 2023, and the main run of the original Hori-san to Miyamura-kun web comic ended in December 2011. The 2021 anime takes the story all the way to graduation, and The Missing Pieces fills in the chapters it left out, ending with an episode called 'Graduation'. The official site's latest news, from March 2024, announces no further series.
What order should I watch Horimiya in?
Watch Horimiya (2021) first, then Horimiya: The Missing Pieces (2023). The Missing Pieces' episodes are side stories set across the same two school years, starting with a second-year class trip, so they make most sense once you know the characters and how things turn out. The six Hori-san to Miyamura-kun OVAs, made by other studios between 2012 and 2021, adapt the web comic, and the 2021 live-action film and drama are a separate retelling; both are optional.
Where can I watch Horimiya?
Funimation first streamed the 2021 series in North America, the British Isles, Mexico and Brazil, with Wakanim in Europe and AnimeLab in Australia and New Zealand, and the series later moved to Crunchyroll, which also streamed The Missing Pieces. Medialink holds the 2021 series in South and Southeast Asia. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
What is Horimiya about?
It is a gentle high-school romantic comedy. Kyoko Hori, the popular girl with top grades, secretly spends her evenings running her family's home, and Izumi Miyamura, the classmate everyone dismisses as a gloomy otaku, has piercings and tattoos he hides at school. When they discover each other's hidden sides, they keep each other's secrets, fall for each other and draw a circle of friends together, each with their own insecurities and crushes, through their final year to graduation.
Is there a live-action Horimiya?
Yes. A live-action film and a TV drama, produced by Horipro and directed by Hana Matsumoto, came out in Japan in February 2021. The film, which combined the first three episodes of the drama with scenes of its own, was shown in cinemas for a week from 5 February, and the drama began on 17 February on MBS's Dramaism block and TBS, and on Apple TV+ in Japan only. It is a separate adaptation, not part of the anime.
