Sailor Moon Characters

A fourteen-year-old who cries easily, sleeps through alarms and turns out to be the reincarnated Princess Serenity of the Silver Millennium. Her power is tied to compassion rather than combat skill, which makes her the least conventionally capable member of her own team and the only one who could hold the Silver Crystal. The series' central argument is that this is not a contradiction.

Sailor Mercury, a genius student whose reputation for coldness is mostly other people's assumption about anyone that quiet. She provides the team's analysis, using a visor and computer to find weak points while the others attack. Her defensive, mist-based powers make her the guardian least suited to a fight and the one who most often ends it.

Sailor Mars, a shrine maiden at Hikawa Shrine with genuine spiritual sensitivity that predates her powers. She is disciplined, blunt and the member most likely to argue with Usagi, which the series presents as affection rather than friction. Her fire attacks and her wards against evil spirits come from two different traditions and she uses both.

Sailor Jupiter, the tallest and physically strongest guardian, who lives alone after losing her parents and consequently cooks, cleans and looks after everyone else. Rumours at school paint her as a delinquent; she is in fact the most domestic member of the team. Her lightning attacks match a temper she has learned to keep on a short leash.

Sailor Venus, who fought alone as Sailor V before any of the others awakened and therefore carries more experience and more loss than she shows. She leads the inner guardians in practice, plays the fool by choice, and switches to complete seriousness the moment the princess is threatened. Her cat Artemis is the counterpart to Luna.

Tuxedo Mask, and in a previous life Prince Endymion of Earth, whose interventions are usually a thrown rose and a well-timed line rather than a decisive attack. His relationship with Usagi begins as mutual irritation and becomes the axis the later seasons turn on. He is captured, corrupted or killed often enough that it becomes a structural feature of the series.

Sailor Chibi Moon, the daughter of Usagi and Mamoru from thirtieth-century Crystal Tokyo, who arrives by falling out of the sky and demanding the Silver Crystal. She is deliberately written as annoying before she is written as sympathetic, and her insecurity about being a guardian who cannot yet fight drives two full seasons. Her friendship with Hotaru is the emotional core of Sailor Moon S.

The black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead who finds Usagi, hands over the transformation brooch and then spends the series trying to make her take the job seriously. She is an adviser from the fallen Moon Kingdom with intact memories the guardians lack, and provides most of the exposition about their past lives. Her exasperation is the series' most consistent comic register.

Sailor Uranus, a racing driver and outer guardian who arrives with a mission that explicitly outranks the inner circle's friendships. She is willing to sacrifice individuals to prevent a larger catastrophe, which puts her in direct opposition to Usagi's whole philosophy. Her partnership with Michiru is presented as inseparable in every sense.

Sailor Neptune, a concert violinist and painter whose refinement conceals the same ruthlessness as her partner's. She carries the Deep Aqua Mirror, one of three talismans, and uses it to see truths the others would rather not confront. Where Haruka argues, Michiru simply acts.

Sailor Pluto, the solitary guardian of the Space-Time Door, bound by taboos against stopping time, travelling through it or revealing the future. She has kept that post alone for an unimaginable stretch, which explains both her reserve and her attachment to Chibiusa. Breaking one of her own laws costs her exactly what she knew it would.

The ruler of the Dark Kingdom and the series' first major antagonist, driven by a jealousy over Endymion that survived her own destruction and rebirth. She commands four generals and answers to a far older entity that is using her. Her arc establishes the pattern every later villain follows: a figurehead with a genuine grievance and something worse behind them.
