About Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon is the series that set the template every magical-girl team has worked from since. Naoko Takeuchi's manga began in Nakayoshi in 1991 and Toei Animation's adaptation ran from 1992 to 1997 across two hundred episodes and five seasons, exporting a formula — transformation sequences, named finishing attacks, a found family of schoolgirls with planetary powers — that is still being used three decades later.
It starts small. Usagi Tsukino is a fourteen-year-old who cries easily, sleeps through her alarm and does badly at school. A talking black cat called Luna hands her a brooch and tells her she is Sailor Moon, defender of a lunar kingdom that fell long before she was born. Over the first season she gathers four others — Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus — and discovers she is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, while a masked man in a tuxedo turns out to be both her classmate's crush and her lover from a previous life.
Each subsequent season widens the frame rather than repeating it. The Black Moon Clan arrives from a thirtieth-century Tokyo that Usagi apparently rules. The outer guardians — Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and eventually Saturn — turn up with a mission that explicitly outranks friendship and a willingness to sacrifice individuals for a planet. By the final season the antagonist is a galactic force and the stakes are the solar system. Underneath all of it, the series keeps insisting that the least capable fighter on the team is the right person to lead it.

The outer guardians change the show when they arrive — Haruka and Michiru are prepared to let people die to prevent a catastrophe, which puts them directly at odds with everything Usagi believes. Setsuna has guarded the Space-Time Door alone for an unimaginable stretch, which explains both her reserve and the one law she is willing to break.
