Nen Type Quiz: What Is Your Nen Type?
Question 1 of 12
You have a week to prepare for something big. How do you use it?
How this Nen type quiz works
In Hunter x Hunter nobody chooses a Nen type. You are born with one of six, and the only reliable way to find out which is Water Divination — a glass of water, a leaf, and your aura. That is hard to arrange through a browser.
So this quiz uses the other method the series offers: Hisoka’s theory that each Nen type goes with a personality. He lays it out during his fight with Gon at Heavens Arena, and it is the only personality-to-type mapping in the story. Each of the 12 questions is built around the traits he names — an Enhancer’s single-mindedness, a Transmuter’s fickleness, a Conjurer’s nerves — and your answers are scored onto all six types at once.
You get your strongest type and the share of your answers that went to each of the others. Most people are a blend, and in the series that is true of Nen too: every user can use the types next to their own, just less efficiently.
The six Nen types explained
Each type below gives what it does, what Water Divination shows for it, the personality Hisoka attaches to it, and characters whose type the manga establishes in a specific chapter.
Enhancer
Hisoka’s read: simple and determinedEnhancement uses aura to strengthen the natural abilities of the body or of an object — hitting harder, defending better, recovering faster. In Water Divination an Enhancer’s aura changes the volume of the water. Gon and Wing are shown to be Enhancers in Chapter 60, and Uvogin of the Phantom Troupe in Chapter 79.
Transmuter
Hisoka’s read: whimsical and prone to deceitTransmutation changes the properties of aura so that it mimics something else. In Water Divination the taste of the water changes. Killua is shown to be a Transmuter in Chapter 60, Hisoka in Chapter 62 and Machi in Chapter 78 — which means Hisoka’s unflattering description of the type is a description of himself.
Emitter
Hisoka’s read: impatient, short-tempered, not detail-orientedEmission separates aura from the body and projects it outward. In Water Divination the colour of the water changes. Franklin of the Phantom Troupe is shown to be an Emitter in Chapter 76. Leorio is listed as one too, though in the story that begins as Killua’s guess rather than a tested result.
Conjurer
Hisoka’s read: high-strungConjuration creates physical objects out of aura. In Water Divination impurities appear in the water. Kurapika is shown to be a Conjurer in Chapter 83, Shizuku in Chapter 77 and Kortopi in Chapter 103.
Manipulator
Hisoka’s read: logical, argumentative, goes at their own paceManipulation controls living or non-living things. In Water Divination the leaf floating on the water moves. Zushi is shown to be a Manipulator in Chapter 60 and Shalnark of the Phantom Troupe in Chapter 102.
Specialist
Hisoka’s read: independent and charismaticSpecialization covers any ability that fits none of the other five types. In Water Divination it produces some other change entirely — Neferpitou’s leaf dries out and crumbles. Chrollo is a Specialist, as are Neferpitou (Chapter 198), Neon (Chapter 110) and Pakunoda (Chapter 105). It is by far the rarest type: one character’s admittedly rough estimate in Chapter 408 puts it at 0.033% of Nen users.
Water Divination: how a Nen type is really found
Wing introduces Water Divination in Chapter 60 of the manga, adapted in Episode 35 of the 2011 anime. A leaf floats on a glass of water, the user holds their hands around the glass and performs Ren, and what happens to the water or the leaf reveals the type.
It is the only sure method shown in the series. Three Specialist results have appeared so far and no two are alike: Neferpitou’s leaf dries out and crumbles, Tserriednich’s water boils and gives off a foul smell, and Kurapika’s — as a Specialist — changes colour while the leaf spins.
| Nen type | What happens in the glass |
|---|---|
| Enhancement | The volume of the water changes |
| Transmutation | The taste of the water changes |
| Emission | The colour of the water changes |
| Conjuration | Impurities appear in the water |
| Manipulation | The leaf moves on the surface |
| Specialization | Some other change entirely |
Hisoka’s personality theory — and why even he calls it a guess
The idea that personality predicts Nen type comes from Hisoka, during his fight with Gon at Heavens Arena in Chapter 62 (Episode 36 of the 2011 anime). He describes Enhancers as simple and determined, and his own type, Transmutation, as whimsical and prone to deceit.
He also undercuts it immediately. Hisoka says the theory is not science and compares it to judging someone’s character by blood type. So treat your result the way the story does: a good guess that is fun to argue with, not a measurement. This quiz is built on that theory, and it inherits the same limit.
| Nen type | Personality, according to Hisoka |
|---|---|
| Enhancer | Simple and determined |
| Transmuter | Whimsical, fickle, prone to deceit |
| Emitter | Impatient, short-tempered, not detail-oriented |
| Conjurer | High-strung |
| Manipulator | Logical, argumentative, goes at their own pace |
| Specialist | Independent and charismatic |
The affinity chart: your type is not your limit
A Nen user is not restricted to their own category. The six types sit on a hexagon, and efficiency falls off with distance: 100% in your own type, 80% in the two next to it, 60% in the next two, and 40% in the one directly opposite.
Chapter 83 gives a worked example. As a Conjurer, Kurapika has 100% efficiency in Conjuration, 80% in Transmutation, 60% in Enhancement and Manipulation, and 40% in Emission. Specialization sits between Conjuration and Manipulation on the chart, which is why a Conjurer gets only 60% in Manipulation rather than 80% — and it is the one type that cannot be partly used. For anyone who is not a Specialist it is simply 0%.
Kurapika is also the one character listed under two types. He is a Conjurer by birth and becomes a Specialist only while his Scarlet Eyes are active, when his ability Emperor Time gives him 100% efficiency in every category — at the cost of an hour of his lifespan for each second he uses it.
Nen type quiz — frequently asked questions
What is my Nen type?
Take the quiz at the top of this page. It asks 12 questions about how you prepare, argue, decide and react, and scores each answer onto the six Nen types using the personality traits Hisoka assigns to them in Hunter x Hunter. You get your strongest type plus the percentage of your answers that went to each of the other five. It takes about two minutes and needs no signup.
How accurate is a Nen type quiz?
It is for fun, and the series itself would agree. The only reliable test in Hunter x Hunter is Water Divination, which needs real aura. Personality-based typing comes from Hisoka, who says outright that it is not science and compares it to blood-type personality profiles. What this quiz does do is score consistently: the same answers always give the same type, all six types are reachable, and none is structurally favoured.
Can you change your Nen type?
No. Every Nen user is born with one type, and Kurapika’s teacher tells him he cannot change what he was born with. The one exception is Specialization, which is described as inherited rather than learned but can emerge later in life — most often in Conjurers and Manipulators, the two types that sit beside it on the chart.
What is the rarest Nen type?
Specialization. Within the story it is very rare: one character’s rough estimate in Chapter 408 puts Specialists at about 0.033% of Nen users. It only looks common because the cast is full of exceptional people — Chrollo, Neferpitou, Neon and Pakunoda are all Specialists.
Can you use Nen types other than your own?
Yes, at reduced efficiency. A user has 100% efficiency in their own type, 80% in the two adjacent types, 60% in the next two and 40% in the opposite type. Biscuit recommends training across types for exactly that reason. Specialization is the exception: it cannot be partly used, so for non-Specialists it is 0%.
What is the difference between Transmutation and Conjuration?
Transmutation changes the properties of aura so that it behaves like something else, while it remains aura. Conjuration creates an actual physical object out of aura. The two sit next to each other on the affinity chart, which is why they are easy to confuse.
Do I need to have watched Hunter x Hunter to take this?
No. None of the questions test knowledge of the series — they are all about you. The explanations below the quiz cover what each type means if you are new to it, and if you would rather test what you remember there is a full 50-question Hunter x Hunter trivia quiz.
