About Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon. It ran for sixty-one episodes across three seasons, from February 2005 to July 2008. Each season is called a Book and is named for the element its hero has to learn — Water, Earth, then Fire — and each episode is a Chapter. It is not a Japanese anime, though it was drawn in a style that deliberately mixes anime influences with American animation, and its world is built from Chinese and other Asian and Indigenous cultures rather than from a European fantasy template.
The premise is laid out in the opening narration. There are four nations, each tied to an element that some of its people can move through a martial discipline called bending. One person, the Avatar, can master all four and is reborn into each nation in turn. A hundred years before the story begins the Fire Nation attacked, the Air Nomads were wiped out, and the Avatar vanished. In the first episode two siblings from the Southern Water Tribe, Katara and Sokka, find him: a twelve-year-old airbender called Aang, frozen in an iceberg with his sky bison.
From there the series is a journey with a deadline. Aang has to learn water, earth and fire before a comet returns at the end of summer and gives the Fire Nation the power to finish the war. He is chased most of the way by Zuko, the Fire Lord's banished son, who has been told that capturing the Avatar is the only way home. What sets the series apart is how seriously it takes that pursuer. Zuko's story runs alongside Aang's for all three Books, and where it ends up is the reason the show is still discussed the way it is.

What the Avatar: The Last Airbender Quiz Tests
Our Avatar: The Last Airbender quiz covers the original animated series only — Books One, Two and Three. It does not ask about The Legend of Korra, the comics, or either live-action version. Easy levels cover the premise: Aang, Appa and Momo, the four nations, who is related to whom in the Fire Nation royal family. The middle levels move through the plot in order — the Siege of the North, the Dai Li and Ba Sing Se, Wan Shi Tong's library, the Day of Black Sun, the Boiling Rock — along with the specialised bending the series introduces, such as metalbending, bloodbending and lightning redirection. The hard levels go to the spirit world and the lore around the edges: Tui and La, Koh the Face-Stealer, Chin the Great, the real martial arts each bending style was modelled on, and what Ozai tells Zuko about the night his mother disappeared.
Key Characters
Aang is a twelve-year-old who would rather be riding animals than saving the world, and the series never lets that tension resolve cheaply: his refusal to kill is treated as a real constraint, not a slogan. Katara is the group's conscience and its most stubborn member, a self-taught waterbender who duels a master for the right to be taught. Her brother Sokka cannot bend at all and compensates by being the one who plans. Toph, who joins in Book Two, is blind, twelve, and already better than her own teacher; she invents metalbending while locked in a metal cage. Opposite them is the Fire Nation royal family. Zuko is scarred and exiled by his father and spends two Books trying to earn his way back. His uncle Iroh, a retired general who lost his own son, travels with him and quietly offers a better model of what a father is. His sister Azula is the prodigy who gets everything Zuko wants and holds it by fear — until, at the Boiling Rock, fear stops working.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Fun Facts
- Each bending style is modelled on a real Chinese martial art: tai chi for waterbending, Hung Gar for earthbending, Northern Shaolin for firebending and Baguazhang for airbending. The creators hired a martial arts consultant, Sifu Kisu, to choreograph them.
- Toph fights differently from every other earthbender on purpose. Her style is based on Southern Praying Mantis rather than Hung Gar.
- The creators have described Appa as a cross between a bison and a manatee, and Bryan Konietzko based Momo's body language on memories of his childhood cat.
- Iroh's segment of 'The Tales of Ba Sing Se', in which he sings 'Leaves from the Vine' for his son, was dedicated to his voice actor Mako, who died while Book Two was airing.
- Fire Lord Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill.
- The series won five Annie Awards, a Primetime Emmy and a Peabody Award, among others.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Quiz — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Avatar: The Last Airbender an anime?
Strictly, no. It is an American animated series, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and produced by Nickelodeon. It is very often grouped with anime because its art style, pacing and serialised storytelling borrow heavily from it, and its creators have named Hayao Miyazaki as an influence. We include it here because anime fans search for it, play it and argue about it alongside everything else in our catalogue — not because we are claiming it is Japanese.
How many episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender are there?
Sixty-one, across three seasons called Books: Water has twenty episodes, Earth has twenty and Fire has twenty-one. The series premiered on 21 February 2005 and ended on 19 July 2008 with the four-part finale 'Sozin's Comet'.
Does this quiz cover The Legend of Korra or the live-action series?
No. Every question is about the original animated series from 2005 to 2008. The Legend of Korra is a sequel set decades later with a different cast, and the live-action film and Netflix series are separate adaptations.
What order should I watch Avatar: The Last Airbender in?
Straight through: Book One: Water, Book Two: Earth, Book Three: Fire. The story is continuous and there is nothing to skip or reorder. The Legend of Korra follows afterwards if you want more.
Where can I watch Avatar: The Last Airbender?
In the United States the complete series has been available to stream on Netflix and Paramount+ since 2020, and on Amazon Prime Video since 2021. Availability differs by country and changes over time, so check your local services.
